Is 28nm ready already? I thought we would only see 28nm stuff in the fall?

Maybe just a trial like the 4770 on 40nm?

That goes along with other reports that the designs are finally taped out.

If they go into production in Q2, I dont think we would see revenue shipments until Q3 at the earliest though. But all that depends on how the 28nm ramp goes.

this makes an interesting time for me i was going to grab some mid-range card to hold me over till a christmas-1Q launch but with all these reports of Mass production in May and a launch shortly afterward it looks like its time to play the waiting game again. 28nm has the potential to drastically alter price-points and performance at the same time - its a REALLY bad time to buy if this is true.

The latest indications denote that in May the series 7000 cards will go into production already.

Depends on when in May. Typically, it's more the end of the month than the beginning. Likely, not 2nd quarter, I'll agree, but early 3rd quarter is very possible.

Since the "5770" just got a rebrand name as ~"6770" with higher clocks and 1.4a hdmi outs ect, I think the first cards on 28nm will be the mid-lower end.

We ll probably see a new 5770... or 7770 in that case.

With how big a jump 40nm->28nm is, we might see the mid-lowend "5770" on the 7xxx series (say 7770) perform like a ~5870 of today.

The 4770 was a good video card. I know because I owned a Powercolor Radeon 4770 PCS which had great PCS cooling.

I had a Sapphire 4770 and it was great. Low temps, great overclocking. I was sitting happily at 900/1000 with load temps of 72C. Performed like a 4850.

Interesting to see what a "7770" will turn out to be. If all the 7xxx series cards use the VLIW4 arch, then might be based off one of the 69xx chips, which doesn't sound right for a card that should be mid-range.

I believe that they are transitioning the entire lineup to VLIW4. It would be extremely easy to do this with 7770, they would just use a cut-down version of 69x0.

If they are in production in May then June-August/ launch?? They've done almost overlapping product cycles before-remember the 1800Xt launch (6970??) then Nvidia hit back with 7800GTX 512mb (580GTX??) and ATI launched 1900XT/X and ruled the heavyweight division for nearly a year. The 6970 is way better than the 1800xt but it should have beaten the 580.

To much guessing. The first 28 part could be AMD's version of the gt210. The 4770 brought nothing new, in terms of architecture/features. It was slotted within the current 4 series also.
So if your basing off of that , the new part would not be in the 7 series. The 4770 was a 'safe' die shrink with 640sp's where the 4850 had 800sp's.
