Says a man with a 6600k running on integrated gpu while he waits. moonbogg has a 3930k so unless he retires his rig for a few months after selling his 2 water cooled 980TIs or buys a cheap gpu to "tide" him over he has a problem.

moonbogg, your therapy sessions can have us watching the incredible fps dual 980TIs put up in SLI!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

People buying at those price points I just assume are like me and have a spare GPU lying around for any "OMG" moments. I got an HD 5870 and GTX 680 sitting in the same box keeping each other company in case something goes down. Haha.

I don't understand why a 980Ti owner would hold onto their card instead of selling it?

Speaking for myself, I get more out of it handing my used cards to family/friends then selling it to them.

My nephews are getting older, but they aren't at the age where they'll appreciate anything over 1080p@60, yet. Haha.

After having watched the hype build about new video cards over the last 25 years, I think I'll just sit back and wait for the benchmarks.

This is awesome if true. But if so, I still expect a hefty premium for us who want more. I have a 980, I can't justify upgrading to "only" 980Ti performance.

As i was saying in another forum,

40nm Barts (HD6870) 256mm2 = 1.700M Transistors
40nm Cayman (HD6970) 389mm2 = 2.640M Transistors
40nm Fermi 2 (GTX 580) 520mm2 = 3.000M Transistors

28nm Pitcairn (HD7870) 212mm2= 2.800M Transistors
28nm Hawaii (R7 390X) 438mm2 = 6.200M Transistors

14nm FF Polaris 232mm2 = ~7.000M Transistors ???

On Pitcairn (HD7870) release

HD7870 40% faster than HD6870
HD7870 11% faster than HD6970 (Hawaii/Maxwell equivalent)
HD7870 94% of the GTX580 (GTX 980Ti/Fury equivalent)

I wouldn't be surprised if Polaris 10 could reach very close at 1080p/1440p to GTX 980Ti and Fury, especially in DX-12 games.

Can Fury X owners join? Being they spent as much for similar performance and are getting their noses rubbed in it too.

Yes, of course. For now, let us observe 5 simple stages toward recovering from our painful betrayal.

There are five stages of the betrayal experience that must be addressed during the healing process:

•Shock.
•Grieving the loss of the GPU vendor you thought you knew.
•Grieving the loss of the actual GPU.
•Dealing with self-blame and humiliation.
•Forgiveness and letting go.

Only after these exercises may we consider purchasing a new GPU. I am currently stuck at stage 1.

I just usually go:
Shock > Denial > [Paycheck] > Moved on.

Has worked wonders for me

It is a very reasonable rumor, but it means absolutely nothing if AMD wait so long that Nvidia actually beats them to market with their own 980ti killer for $350. The hype train will have left the station at that point and it wont even matter if the AMD card offers the exact same performance for $50 less. The new Nvidia card will still outsell it 2:1.

Well I mean if you have a usage obviously but I mean people still are using 780ti....

We still have nothing but rumors that nVidia won't be behind on release date. We'll see. Agree that AMD could really use being 1st to market.

Whoa yeah, being first is a huge ass deal actually. That first card that beats 980ti for under $500 will have people freaking out big time and everyone will buy it. The next card to do the same, people will be like, "Oh yeah, that one is a good deal too if you still need a GPU". 90% of the money out there will have already been spent on the first release GPU.
As traumatizing as this is for me, I hope its true. Because if it is, that means the big die chips will be STUPID fast and that's what I will be looking at. Maybe go single GPU again for the first time since...um...Geforce FX 5800 Ultra. I could do it if big Pascal is about twice as fast and comes out before too long. Hell, maybe I'll go with a single Vega.

Are you forgetting what Navi suggests together with some of Koduri statements. The limit is no longer 600mm^2. Interposers changes the paradigm.

You're right. Forgot about the possiblities interposers enable, apart from what we've already seen on Fiji and GP100.

I didn't see listed in your 5 stages lying to yourself.

Seems like a reasonable option to me. There's likely to be at least a couple minutes of single GPU goodness until you get the wrap off the second box and pull it out of its anti-static bag.

Could be true, but I am skeptical, especially of the price. Especially for whoever comes out first, I think the price will be relatively high for a while.

299USD for their most expensive GPU in their 2016 line up? Suuuure.

Maybe the Polaris 10 PRO, but not the XT!
Even the PRO I would imagine around 349 and the XT at 449USD, if they match 980ti performance...

Nvidia will announce their line up first and until then I'm guessing AMD is in stand by to look at their numbers which should beat AMD polaris in performance, and then position their solution as the best value...

The price per transistor of these 16nm finfets would be similar or higher than the 28nm stuff right?

I'd say it's unlikely, but it would be great.

Reading forums leads to the conclusion that most people can't imagine a cheap well performing video card anymore. Nearly everyone can't believe a $300 Polaris = fury X to 980Ti equivalent card.

Most are projecting slightly better perf/$ ratios than the present crop.

Reminds me of the fact that most humans think linearly and have extreme difficulty with exponential functions.

Or that most humans have long memories and recall the miserly increase in perf/$ the last time we had a new node.

One time should not make a trend.

Do many realize that the Fury X and 980Ti will NOT be the big cards from both camps soon?

Any sales/marketing people here to comment on how AMD might have conducted surveys on possible pricing/sale volume ratios? The amazing amount of individuals claiming to be eating their underwear, hats, etc if the $300 & Fury X/980Ti performance is real, will certainly lead to increased clothing sales.

I'd imagine that if this is the reality of what Polaris will do for price/performance that at least 1070 will be price adjusted from 399 to 299 or 349.

I agree on the pricing. The Polaris will be priced in relation to its performance and availability. The 390X is $399 at Newegg give or take a few. So a new Polaris card that is faster, has more memory and feature set than a 390X is going to cost more. If it is even close to 980ti performance it will be way more than the $399 R9 390X
