Bam! That looks like some ugly news. I don't like it. Do you like the sound of this? Actually I don't care, but figured I'd share because it seems kind of...wrong of them for some reason.

"Starting with a pending December update to GeForce Experience, NVIDIA will be changing the way they will distribute their driver updates. Nvidia currently posts new drivers on a regular basis to their website while also simultaneously pushing them out via GeForce Experience. Come December starting pending that update, this format will changing. GeForce Experience will be the preferred “first access” distribution mechanism for NVIDIA’s frequent driver updates. That means Nvidia will shove GeForce Experience down your throat whether you like it or not. So in short - you’ll be able to install Game Ready drivers only via GeForce Experience — and even then only after you’ve registered a verified email address with Nvidia. The drivers you can grab on GeForce.com or via Windows Update will also be limited to quarterly releases for bug fixes, new features, security updates and so on. Aside from perhaps a hotfix here and there."

The requirement of registration with an e-mail address is even worse than the requirement to use GeForce Experience.

Holy balls. What an incredibly stupid idea. This is as bad as Google trying to force Google+ down people's throat with YouTube.

I don't farking need GFE. It is nice software, but I'll be damned if I am going to install extra bloatware just because. The Nvidia control panel is all I need.

Driver updates through GFE have never worked properly for me. Normally it will hang in the middle of the install and I have to kill the process or it will freeze the system all together. This has been the case with Win 7, Win 8.1, and Win 10 all via clean installs both with my previous 780 SLI and current 980ti SLI system. The traditional way I have never had a problem, so this is very disappointing news for me.......

Especially for those of us who like to use display driver unistaller to make sure all files are removed and the new driver install is clean like it is on a brand new system.

I understand the idea of what they are trying to achieve, but you can't just turn your back on enthusiast who are more tech savvy. Those are the ones who helped make the company what it is today.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. I hope there is enough backlash to make Nvidia rethink their decision.

I am hoping so too.

They quote that 90% use it for driver updates, but that's probably only because its setup to auto-download the drivers by default. Actually following through with installation that way probably is a much smaller %.

The only thing that I don't like about it is that I prefer to download a driver once and toss it on my server for my PCs to access. It's not a lot of bandwidth per month, but when you're metered, any little bit of savings can help. Anyway, the point is that GeForce Experience would require me to download it on each PC versus just downloading it once.

If its just about the email Nvidia, let me log into the website with it then and let me download drivers the traditional way.

This looks like a start to offer "Nvidia as a service" model.
They will soon, if not already, send "telemetry" data back to home base, pretty much doing what win 10 does.
This could be good or bad, depending on how you are looking at it.
Problem comes when during a crash, the crash dump could contain sensitive information which could be abused.
It also opens up the potential of exploits.

We need lots more information on what exactly is going on behind the scenes before I would install GeForce Experience to get newer drivers.

So, you will just have to wait to get the driver without using GFE.

Meanwhile NVIDIA will still post drivers to their website, but on a reduced quarterly cadence.
I get the impression that this change is in part driven by a desire to establish separate “gamer” and “long term” driver release cadences where non-gamers aren’t constantly being bombarded by Game Ready point updates that primarily affect software they aren’t using.

Only if you use shadow play. I doesn't run by default does it?

Nvidia streamer service runs by default if you don't turn it off and incurs a ~5% perf penalty when you install GeForce Experience unless you turn it off.

Tying day ready updates to it is basically asking for a revolt. Haha. Two opinions here:

mine: I agree, GFE is basically garbage and I only installed it once, to try it out. Never again.

Girlfriend: She yelled at me when she realized I uninstalled it when I was switching out her GTX 680 to my GTX 780 Lightning (which was a few months ago?). So clearly she didn't use it, but when Battlefront told her she needed new drivers she realized it was gone. So she liked the ease for updating drivers, though she'd go ignoring it prompts for months. Some people.

Yeah, there is gonna be enough backlash where NV changes it.

EDIT:

So, you will just have to wait to get the driver without using GFE.

Hmmmm....

This makes me think is this NV's answer to Windows stupid auto-update? I swear before I disabled Windows Update, I was getting a new NV driver like every other day.

I installed the latest driver through GFE last night.

I bet you all are expecting me to defend it saying it works fine and there's no reason to complain, right?

End of installation resulted in a VC++ Redistributable Crash dialog box popup. If they want my email on top of this pile of ... anyway. Yeah, no.

Keysplayer, here's your opportunity to put your Nvidia affiliation to good use. Tell them this is a horrible idea.
