These cops were in the wrong.

Nobody should "do as they say" because a cop wears a badge and "has the authority". It's this kind of thinking that allowed Hitler to come to power. We have civil liberties in order to protect against this kind of thing- the cops were on one serious power trip. Call me a liberal, but there's a difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of it. I abide by the latter, sometimes at the expense of the former.

And "liberal college kids" *do* deserve special consideration. We (directly or indirectly) are paying for it. When you're spending 50k/yr on an education, you damn well better be treated humanely.

Furthermore- tasers? In a library? The cops might be expected to ensure the safety of students by removing unidentified individuals from the premises, but there was little reason to taser someone and disturb all other students in the area. It's also a pretty dumb move to have a hasty trigger finger only weeks after another kid dies after a tasering. (DT article, I believe)

edit: slight clarification

Cliffs:

1. Some college kid is asked to show ID in a college library.
2. The douche refuses and is now trespassing.
3. Same leftist twit chooses to spout off about his polical views rather than obey lawful police commands.
4. Police taze the idiot a few times and repeat lawful commands.
5. The douche continues to refuse lawful police commands, and remains a trespasser.
6. Other college naive nit wits whine and complain.
7. The douche now believes he is Rodney King and continues to be an ass.
8. Some attorney thinks he can make a buck files a lawsuit on behalf of this asshat.
9. The judge tazes both the attorney and the douche and dismisses case.
10. Douche continues his job in the exciting world of fast food.
11 . Me laughs.

No, I'm talking about pussy-faced cops who parade around with their tasers.

Tasers are for women. Real cops are the ones who can assess and mediate a situation without causing a scene. If the officers wanted to talk to the student, they could have escorted him out and done so without grabbing him. He was already by the door, on his way out of the lab.

Real cops existed before the era of tasers. Cops today think that a new weapon in their hand removes good judgement from their skill set.

If you had told me this was the beginning of a new post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie I would have believed you. Kid can't produce 'papers' so police use machine to torture him with electric shocks. Glad I don't live in America.

I really hope ATOT isnt a microcosm of American thinking. Cuz if so, we've already accepted that we have no more rights. This is very very scary to me cuz if its the case, we're that much closer to Nazi Germany. What shocks me more than the cops abuse of his powers is that so many of you are saying that the cops were right in tasering him. This tells me that most of America has already handed all rights over to the police's discretion. That to me is the scariest thing possible.

wow

They should have carried him out. You don't continue to taser a semi incapacitated person. If they can't stand then carry them out. If he claims medical. Call an ambulance to the scene while he is handcuffed. He can lay on the floor with taser probes attached. If he does anything wrong tase him again. Medical picks him up on stretcher and tends to his medical condition if it exists. After doctors clear him he is released and goes to jail.

All of this is billed to him.

However it's obvious the student forced a scene to try to prove a point.

I think the police were right to a certian degree.

You haven't worked closely with law enforcement or have any law enforcement friends huh? "Real cops existed before the era of tasers" is true but you also would have got an ass beating at the end of a wooden billy club or extendable PR24 for mouthing off like this puke did. Now days any physical abuse (resulting in injuries or not) will be a magnet for money hungry lawyers and lawsuits. A taser is less harmful than a physical strike or even OC spray so this screaming baby was lucky. When he physically pushed his way past the police officer ended the time of verbal communication and started the time of less than lethal action.

Looks like you didn't get much out of your university education. Most undergrads and grad students I know actually learned something and have come to appreciate the freedoms afforded by this country before the likes of you started popping up.

For what it's worth, I have a graduate degree from a top-10 university.

Yes, in fact, taking pleasure in the torture of another human being is indicative of a serious psychological problem. Seems to be quite a prevalent one in America, or at least in this thread.

Freedoms afforded to you by this country are not free. As a recent alumni of UCLA, I appreciate the personal freedoms the school offers but I also appreciated the safety that the school provided for me to even exercise those freedoms.

In this case, the situation is a lose-lose. The student obviously has a chip on his shoulder and had an agenda of pulling the race card. Would it be ok if this same kid pulled this stunt at an airport? What do you think would happen if he decided that he was going to become uncooperative at an airport instead of a school library? Both places are large public areas where many people can become involved and get hurt if the situation escalates.

From the story, it seems that first the kid was first approached by CSO officers (which are just students at UCLA working to help pay for tuition) regarding his ID. So, being that UCLA is considered a liberal college are we to assume that these student officers were out to get someone? Were they profiling this kid and student knowing full well that they are students themselves? It was then the student who refused to leave and decided to make a raucous (most likely feeling safe that he would be supported by students due to the liberal nature of the college). The article states that UCPD (which uses officers from the LAPD) took a few minutes to arrive. The exit for Powell Library does not take a few minutes to get to. It's doubtful that the CSO was going to call the UCPD if he was just putting his belongings away and heading out peacefully.

So, in the end, there are so many discrepancies in the stories that it's doubtful that people will ever get a full account. The video doesn't show the initial request for ID and starts after the UCPD arrives. That's a few minutes of video footage that we as bystanders have no idea what occurred. It's funny how quick we are to judge police officers and how slow people are in judging the individual and themselves. As a conclusion to my post, as a graduate of UCLA from last year, I can tell you that the students there love to jump on the badwagon when it comes to issues they feel they can use to make a point of liberal "rights." It's convenient to forget who protects these rights for you. Police live on a fine line of protecting your rights and taking them away. It's a necessary evil.

The more and more I watch that video. Damn that kid has a NICE camera phone? It really does feel like it was almost staged or setup and the police stepped right into the trap? Does anyone know who took the video and if that student has any ties to the guy getting arrested?

Not trying to get all conspiracy here. Just something that feels odd as I watch the video again.

Really, where did you get your morals.

The US has never stooped to the lows of "expect a police ass kicking". I would have thought having a excellent education would have affored you some civic lessons.

"Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number. "

hmm, i guess they're not allowed to ask the police officers for their identification after they beat a student?

I've rarely seen such a combination of conceit and elitism from someone - it really is quite amazing. An education is certainly of high import and is worth some praise, but constantly harping about it makes one come across as insecure and needed validation.

Success in higher education IMO is far less than 1/2 of what is required to be truly succesful in the world.

Hehe - and top 10? That only means you didn't go to a top 5 school

Because it's a great idea to badger the police while they're trying to make an arrest while the student is yelling and screaming? Next time you see a police in the process of arresting someone, please do proceed to approach them asking for badge numbers. See what sympathy you get. Honestly, some people need to control the chip on their shoulders. Not everyone is out to get you.

The websites Mill linked may not say ID is mandetory after 11pm, but I do recall seeing signs in the library saying that they do ID checks after 11pm.
