I refuse to believe people eating bark.

they have eaten bark, grass, roots - anything to survive. The condition of the the North Koreans is MUCH worse thatn most people realize.

i think a million starved already.

All propaganda lies spread by the NK government so SK and the world would give them more aid. again i have no proof. But theres not much proof that a million people starved to death either.

Actually it would be worse for the world to see that they are having a famine, that communism doesn't work and that North Korea is in the crapper. There is more and more growing evidence of people starving and a growing famine - especially by the numerous people escaping North Korea.

I saw a documentary on Discovery or History channel or something like that. They've definately be propaganda'ed to death about hating Americans. Whenever anything goes wrong at all, the government blames the Americans. Time for some liberation. (No sarcasm)
Yeah, let's go liberate another country so we can die and be unappreciated. When did we become the liberators of the world?

1941.

Ask most S. Koreans who lived through the Korean War, we are hardly unappreciated.

Yes, but now ask young S. Koreans who were born way after the Korean war, if they appreciate the US, they'll say hell no, get out of our country so we can reunite with NK. US is not wanted.

If the North ever decided to move south, they would change their minds very quickly.
I don't think reunification is possible with the current leadership in the North. Maybe in another generation or so.

What pisses me off is why don't these young SKs understand this? They think reunification is possible with their "sunshine" policy, all lovely dubby, lets get together to be one big happy family again. Are they dumb? the only reason NK became nice was because SK leaders bribed them with something like 400 million dollars. Kim's just taking their money and laughing at them, he ain't gonna reunite, he's not gonna give up his power or even share it. Why share when you have absolute power? Kim's playing them for suckers and he's winning big.

That is exactly right.

I think the problem with the younger generation is that they have little experince with what the North Korean leadership actually represents.

I can believe it.

There was a front page article in the Los Angeles Times two weeks ago about North Koreans being much shorter than South Koreans because they don't have enough food.

As in, the average South Korean man is now almost as tall as the average American. The average North Korean is less than five-foot tall and less than 100 pounds. The article talks about how the military has dropped its previous five-foot-two minimum height requirement because they didn't have enough recruits to meet the criteria, and there's also a claim that the NK men posted near the DMZ are generally chosen from the tallest that are available.

I can't find the article on the LA Times Web site, but there's a reprint here.

Outside of it being a humanitarian disaster, it's an interesting situation because the North and South Koreans are a homogeneous group of people who have become distinct because of nutrition and lifestyle... in just a 40 year time span!

how hard can it be? Look at the current socio-economic status of NK and SK and anybody can see for themselves WHICH system works better.

Yes I know I'm stating the obvious.

You have economic systems confused with political systems. Communism is a political system. Socialism and capitalism are economic systems.
Before you oversimplify, remember that for every USA there's a Mexico. For every (nominally) socialist nation like NK, there's a Sweden.

i've seen something about the fake cities also. If i remember right, in the fake cities, they have real people stand in intersections and "direct" the traffic. I remember seeing a clip of a woman in a uniform, whistle in her mouth, directing traffic, then the shot zoomed out, there were 0 cars.

NK

I'm south korean... can i appreciate the americans who fought in the korean war? to be honest, no, i can't... do my grand parents appreciate the men that did, of course!

even so... the conditions in nk are so bad that something must eventually be done...

i mean... people get tortured and killed at these prison camps...

nk's don't have any sort of human rights at all...

i wouldn't go as far to say that it's a waste of money for the gov't to be spending on iraq...

there were a lot of human rights violations going on there as well...

but something eventually needs to be done in NK... even if it's not by the US or whoever... but just something in general needs to be done...

Heck, the U.N. forces (which were mostly comprised of American forces) had North Korea basically whipped during the first year of the Korean War; that is, until China decided to step in and 'save' NK from U.S. occupation and eventual peace and prosperity (see Japan post-1945). Don't they teach history to you kiddies in school anymore? The reason the U.S. can't go in now is because NK is China's b!tch, and any invasion would trigger a larger regional, if not global, war. So several million starving North Koreans can thank Bejing for keeping them starving, suffering, and dying in huge numbers.

They don't teach us about Korea in high school. The only way to know much about it would be to take a class devoted to the conflict in college.

I suppose the fact that the North Koreans have 2.3 million active troops and enough artillery to level Seoul within minutes pointed at the capital have nothing to do with the fact that the US can't go in right now. Well, that and the "war on terror".

And how many of them would be willing to give up their lives in defense of an insane dictator ruling by terror and willfully starving his own people? We'd just have to drop pamphlets telling 'em that as soon as this conflict is over, dinner will be served.
