I quit my job, sold everything, bought a sailboat, and sailed it from the US to Chilean Patagonia!

Got divorced, lost my job, so me and my buddy got on our motorcycles and rode North to the Alaskan Arctic until the road ran out.

Would be awesome to do something like this, but when I think of the lost income and compound interest over 30 years on the portion that was socked away, it just doesn't seem like a good idea. I'd rather not work till I'm 80.

I never had any desire to travel. If I want to see more of the world I just watch the travel channel. If that's not enough I click on something called Google Earth. Thanks to that I got to see how shitty so many parts of Italy is.

I'd like to point out that this isn't a very "easy" thing to do. Sailing a 30ft boat through those waters, mostly alone, is much more difficult and dangerous than hiking the AT,etc. While the wind is free, one gives up creature comforts to live on a small boat like that. So make no mistake, but the urge to really get the hell away from everyone must be the drive.

singlehanding is complete diiscipline. Nobody is going to watch the helm for you, and all it takes is a decent sized tree of worse, a semi-submerged container to end your trip. This is far more of a problem sailing through the night and on autopilot.

From reading through the comments, it sounds like he started a skiing manufacturing company before, then bought the boat (he said about twice the price of a used car). He said it costs him about $15k a year to live on the boat.

Travel is a lot cheaper than people generally think it is -- when you remove international flights and $300/night resorts from the menu.

Which is why you need to be single when you travel. Plus it's whole more fun to travel solo.

But it's still not cheap, you're most likely not going to be bringing food back to the hotel room to cook every night.
