This one is for the books?

So, I build this computer system for my parents who live in NYC as an early Christmas present. I tested the system for a good 3 straight weeks for any errors, etc. Everything went perfect. Vista Ultimate 64 worked flawlessly. Not one single error message from start to finish.

I DHL-ed the package and 3 days later it gets to its destination intact and in one piece (at least, after a first and general inspection). My mom follows my impeccably written instructions which I had previously color matched for all the main cables, she does a power-up (all this with me on the phone) and? System/Disk Failure. I felt like NASA sending the rover to Mars when the whole experiment went astray.

So, I?m speechless but still found the necessary strength to? be scratchin? my head trying to figure out what the heck just happened I?m thinking that maybe the HD could have gotten damaged during transport from all the ?unnecessary? rolling and throwing and ? you get the picture. In any case, the error didn?t sound like anything that I could easily fix using Remote Desktop so I told my mom (while sensing her disappointment) to pack it and send it back to me.

I was pissed off? But not long after this incident, my mom calls me and tells me that while trying to re-pack the system, she heard something rattling inside. Bingo!!! I said!

The HD was sitting on 4 vibration tempering rubber little things which kept it fairly sturdy in place. The HD was not screwed in place as the case employed this new system (which I thought it was really nice for tempering vibrations). Now, that I?m thinking about it, I guess a good thump or a rough upside down handling, could have very well snapped the HD from its location, disconnecting it from the SATA cable and possibly from the power source.

Question: Would this cause a System/Disk Failure? Please, tell me this is the case.

I?ll have someone open the computer tomorrow and see what?s going on inside. Until then, I?m worried sick?

Yes if the drive was disconected then you would get a disk boot failure. But that doesn't rule out a damaged HDD.

Follow up:

HD was what was rattling inside the case, freely and unattached to SATA or power cable!

The computer posted OK so the video and everything else seems to be working fine. No obvious damage to electronics inside.

The SATA cable snapped, bending and totally messing the little metal snap.

I'm trying to get this re-connected by someone who knows this stuff. Hopefully, the HD is not damaged. Hopefully?

How would you like to make $75.00 cash in less than five minutes? If you live in or around Rego Park, NY (Queens, 5 minutes walk from subway station) and have a little free time tomorrow, give me a holler I'm serious!
