Thats great if we all go to the help pages as well and help the newbies, by directing them to our help pages it is sure to help make them join! I have already started doing this, with a concerted effort we can linch all newbies in there!

Hey aiex,

what's the matter? Got nothing better to do than hijack your opponents recruiting attempts?

Very bad taste IMHO and I have notified the race Ambassador. This makes your teams second offense of hijacking our recruiting attempts.

of course i have nothing better to do, i'm addicted to seti like the rest of us

Besides i though that was meant to be a help people thread, not a recrute thread, if you wanted that prehaps you should have put it in the teams section of the forums?

While posting recruiting topic in your thread is in bad form, IMHO, there is nothing that says Team Anandtech cannot create a similar thread for recruiting. And I wouldn't consider that bad form at all.

Personally, if I was the Berkeley SETI furom owner, I would ban any attempts at recruiting, or else have a separate forum subject and let all teams interested try to recruit. Sort of like job fairs.

Here is what I Posted there.

<< Just wanted to see how many Alaskan's there are crunching WU's for SETI@Home. Of course, it will be limited to how many actually check out this site thoroughly. I am in North Pole, Alaska, and am currently a part-time student at U.A.F.

What kind of Stats do you have, and what team, if any, do you crunch for? I crunch for Team AnandTech SETI, who is currently ranked at number 11 in the world. If you need any assistance with SETI@Home, please feel free to drop into the Distributed Computing Forums at http://www.anandtech.com. Or, if you want to copy and paste a direct Link: http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=39
Many of our members also have help sites, dedicated to helping you get the most out of SETI@Home.

My personal Stats are as follows.

Name (and URL) ShotgunSteve
Results Received 1140
Total CPU Time 1.685 years
Average CPU Time per work unit 12 hr 56 min 49.1 sec
Last result returned: Tue Feb 5 13:02:39 2002 UTC
Registered on: Sun Aug 19 00:55:16 2001 UTC
SETI@home user for: 4101 hr 54 min
Your group info:
You belong to the group named: TeAm AnandTech
You are not currently the founder of any teams.

Your rank: (based on current workunits received)

Your rank out of 3526206 total users is: 84245th place.
The number of users who have this rank: 92
You have completed more work units than 97.608% of our users.

So why exactly do you, my fellow Alaskans, run SETI@Home? Do you do it for the Stats? The science? Do you think we will find life out there, or is the only real benefit the other astronomical phenomena that we pick up signals from? I personally think there is life out there, and hopefully once they start sending us WU's from data below the equator, we will find something.

Poor taste??? I would consider an open recruiting call in a help forum to be bad taste! Its one thing to answer someone's questions and then point out that you are a member of a team, but to create a blatant recruiting thread like that is IMHO very poor taste.

Second offense? I don't remember a first. Although I do remember a person from your team offering a deal to another team for help. I know that wasn't sanctioned by your team, but before you go throwing stones you might want to move out of your glass house!

They're having (or did have) bandwidth problems and now they have this? Seems kind of backwards, but hey if we can get some new recruits, let do it!!

Ha, that's a good point LANMAN.

They are clogged right now. My Q has a bunch stuck. Happens around this time every day of the week (except the weekends).

Well probably the best thing to do is what INDY did, just give them the best advise and help!

And if there's something they don't understand, Then refer them Here!!

After all we're all going for the same goal!

I do not see that as a blatant recruiting thread. I made no mention of a race.

I see that as someone offering a service that is available to those members of a site who participate on a team, a free service to keep them crunching. My service has never nor will ever be available to non-team members.

And as far as the 1st offense, check with your ambassador. He has the details.

[edit]P.S. Look at the title for this entire thread.[/edit]

Hijacking a recruiting thread?

Is that like thread crapping?

Sounds more like when my sister and I were young and traveling in the back seat of the car on a long trip.

"You touched me!"
"You touched me first!"
"You looked at me funny!"
"Daaaaad! She stuck her tongue out at me!"
"Moooom! He's on my side of the seat!"

"If you kids don't cut it out right now, I'm turning this car around! I mean it!!!

Geez....

LANMAN, I too wondered how they got the bandwidth to start the forums. We should asked all the forum posters to move here and save the bandwidth for WUs!

FYI on the topic of "thread crapping": I would hope all TA members have the brains(and the control) not to crap or otherwise advertise the team in a section reserved for help. While the line is pretty much on our side on these forums, it's not nearly as favorable in anyone else's. The "unofficial" policy at TA has been(and hopefully always will be) that advertising outside of our territory is saved for when people are asking about general DC questions, and not asking for help; and if for some reason the team is mentioned, it's done as humbully as possible. Burning the bridge hurts badly when you want back accross.:frown:

<Join DSLR Team Starfire - get a free Work Unit Cache!>

1. This is a recruiting thread. They can only get the free work unit cache IF they join DSLR. It is an advertisement for DSLR. Pure and simple. Since it seems there are no SETI Forum rules against it as far as I know, then it is legit.

2. I think it was bad form (thread crapping) of Aiex to post a Team Anandtech recruitment topic in FutureMan's thread. It is frowned on in the other forums here. It would have been better for Aiex to just create a different Team Anandtech thread.

That is IMHO, and an easy fix is for Aiex to edit his post in FutureMan's thread, and just create a Team Anandtech thread. We can offer free technical advice, not only for SETI, but for a wide range of technical subjects. If they join TA, we can offer a free cache, and possibly (I'm definitely speaking out of turn here, this part is up to Shux & Bot) an easy to use SETI GUI installer.

Then we let those going to that forum read and decide.

Or, the SETI folks decide that it isn't appropriate, and lay down some guidelines. :Q
