It was 90% "single" votes when I posted!

I always had to tag along with my parents grocery shopping. I know how to pick out good produce due to that, so I always have to go with the gf to make sure we get the best fruits and vegetables out of the bunch. Everything else that is boxed up I don't care.

I always grocery shop for myself. I even walk to the store to do it. My dad retired from the grocery store business and taught me all the tricks to getting stuff cheaper, especially meat. I hated it when I lived with him because if I bought something I got a lecture about how I could have gotten it cheaper, now I am glad he was around .

I do most of the shopping and nearly all of the cooking. And the dishes.

But she does the laundry, folds, and irons my clothes so I consider it a wash.

Glad you asked. I do all of the shopping. She's clueless about prices, so I can't send her. I somewhat enjoy it, but we (I) just buy and cook the same few things over and over. Simple stuff, like frozen skillet meals or spaghetti w/ meat sauce or taco night. I'm so bored with that crap, but I can't get her to plan ahead and thaw stuff and find a few new, good recipes. We have several cookbooks, but never get around to using them. There are always like several ingredients for each recipe that we don't have. Lots of stuff goes bad in the fridge too. We just can't get this shit straight.

I work and she's a stay-at-home mom with a 4 yr old boy. The house is always a mess and like I said, can't get a decent meal. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. I'm so off topic now...

We live 10 miles from the nearest grocery store and also shop at different stores for different items. So, who ever happened to be going in the right direction at the right time shops. Since one store is on my route home from work, usually that person is me. The idea that food shopping should be a sex linked activity is retarded.

I'm single, so if I don't do it it doesn't get done (well, outside of my bff who brings me meat and produce from whole foods with her employee discount if she comes over after work)

my dad always did all the grocery shopping growing up, though.

I do it myself. I don't mind doing it, except for dealing with the checkout when it's ridiculously busy. I try to avoid it on weekends and do it in the week after work. Normally I end up going for one thing and it turns into a whole full blown grocery shopping. It's worse if I'm hungry.

The first thing people should do is learn where the cuts of meat come from on the animal. Often the same meat is sold for more because it is cut a certain way.

Something like tip steak is almost never sold pre-cut but if you buy a rump roast you can get some good steak out of it. Back ribs come from the same area as rib eye steak but the ribs are usually cheaper if bought in bulk and sliced. Never buy pre-ground hamburger. It contains the old meat that they couldn't sell the day before and it was starting to turn so it is now hamburger which hides the discoloring. Instead find some low cost cuts of meat , really doesn't matter what as all unsold meat ends up in hamburger, and have it ground.

Look through the counters to find things like hot dogs , bacon, etc that is a few days before the expiration date. Stores will mark these down for quick sell. Most stores do this early morning. Packaged meats are good for 1-2 weeks beyond what they are dated, cured meats even longer. I have never found a bad product yet, going as far as a month beyond the date. You can often get things for less than half the normal retail. Bring it home and use it or toss it in the freezer to keep long term.

The best way to get good deals in meat is to learn how it gets to the display case, then you can learn all the tricks that are used to price it and sell it . Make friends with the local meat department workers, they have often have a lot of leeway in what they charge.

Try this link better than a Cook Book. I too only have a few Dishes that I cooked over and over, but recently I've been trying a new thing every week or two. Most recent was Beef Ribs.

When picking out meat like ribs or steak for the BBQ you never send a woman to do a man's job.

Always, since I do the cooking. I prefer as fresh as possible so I usually go to the grocery store 3 - 4 times a week as well. Besides, my wife is terrible at selecting produce and meats.

The deal is that I shop for groceries, she buys the clothes because she has a fashion sense, I have none, and I hate clothes shopping in the first place. It's a fair trade-off.

I like grocery shopping if I can do it late at night when every other mutant on the planet has gone home.

I couldn't have said it better myself. It seems like people in this town put on the grossest clothes they own and then roll around in crap before going to the store.

I worked the 4 pm - 12 am shift for like 2 years... I'd always do my grocery shopping after work at a 24/hr supermarket.

it was great to have the store all to myself, but sucked because the deli/butcher/seafood sections were closed.

I've found the best time to go is late morning in the middle of the week. it's just me, old people, and housewives.

Women shop about the pace of a snail.

Haha that's true. I sometimes see woman in an isle, taking up the most space possible with their cart, just standing there, not moving. So I'll avoid that isle and go in next, then come back to the one I skipped, only to find the same woman, maybe 10 feet further then she was when I last checked. I think what they do is read the nutritional information, then add price, and use a very sophisticated formula to see not only what is the best price for 10 similar items, but also what is the one that is best to not gain weight. This long series of calculations takes long.

I just grab whatever I want, and move on. No huge price analytics and crap. It's not worth the trouble to save 2 bucks.

The person for whom it's more convenient goes....which is usually me since the grocery store is on my way home from work.
