I just finished ordering everything for my new pc.
I will be playing several games that are not online types.
I want to play a mmo until EQ next comes out but i dont want to pay to play.

I have hear good things about both Rift and GW2

Is there anything that should draw me to one or the other or are they both about the same?

Rift is Free 2 Play so you can try it and see. I haven't played Rift since the first 6 months it came out, but it was a good game, if you like WoW then you'll like Rift. I didn't care much for GW2. No holy trinity really sucks for MMO type games imo, plus I just found the game a bit, boring. Though I haven't played it in awhile and I know they do tons of free updates.

Best bet though is trying Rift since you can for free and if you like it, play it, if not then try GW2.

Rift is certainly the more "traditional" MMO of the two, and probably more accessible coming in blind. I don't hate Guild Wars 2 (and, yes, you'd have to buy it), but for me at least it's a bit more of a grind than I'd like--albeit not TERA grind bad, mind, just annoyingly so.

Thanks But I thought you had to buy the game?

Nope.

You can play for free, and it's well supported.

Frankly, I love the game. I love the art style. I love how it's void of the 'wow kiddie' drama and it seems anybody playing is serious about it.

It runs nice, looks nice, has great lore, great game play, and the entire concept of 'rifts' and community raids makes it more fun for me as a casual player.

That said, I haven't played GW2.

I would try Battlefield 4 my new system should be able to handle it good but I get Bored with FPS some times.
Running around tryng to get the first shot off or waiting to snipe some one gets old to me.

Both games are good in their own ways in my opinion but I haven't played RIFT much.

RIFT is free to play indeed so you can always just download it and try it. You'd have to buy Guild Wars 2, but it's a one time purchase that's it. I agree with Redshirt 24 in that RIFT is the more traditional MMO of the two. There's indeed no holy trinity system in Guild Wars 2 (no actual 'tank'/'healer'/'dps-focused' classes, you can be a bit of everything in between with all the game's classes depending on your builds).

Also GW2 is very much solo-friendly although of course you won't experience everything there is to play if playing mostly on your own, but playing alone can lead you to end-game content without a hitch. Speaking for myself here... but the lack of holy trinity system was in and of itself a loss of incentive to group up with others to play. Had there been a more traditional approach I'd would have ended up going 'tank' and grouping to help tanking dungeons (as I do in most MMORPGs I play). It's ok though GW2 doesn't 'have to' have a trinity system, it wasn't the devs' intentions it's alright, it's a different approach to MMOs (it's just not for everyone). I'd say that GW2 is still a solid game and there's regular updates.

The production value is good with GW2 as well, I love the soundtrack, the environments' quality, some of the maps have well-crafted layouts, some complex with a bit of secrets to find and platforming thrown in. Additionally, the maps can be quite large, and all of them combined form a gigantic game, in fact I thought that it was rather intimidating to explore, it can be very time-consuming if you intend to discover everything in each of the maps. I really like most of the animations as well (the dancing animations, however... that's another story but it's also my opinion anyway) most of the voice acting isn't bad at all (most is the key word, because there's definitely exceptions here and there, cheesy stuff but not in a 'purposely so' way, more like in a 'voice actor completely missed it' way).

But yeah, at least RIFT is free anyway so just give it a try and see. And despite the fact that I don't play much GW2 I think it's definitely worth its price nonetheless.

GW2 all the way.
I even got Rift with the Raptr offer (by letting the trial game on during the night) but couldn't play for more than 5 minutes since it is just like WoW and I'm really not into WoW (it might be a good thing for you though).

Also it seems to me EQnext will share some of the concepts GW2 use.

GW2 combat is more heavily focused on movement, positioning (loads of AoE skills and most melee weapons can hit up to three targets if you position yourself right) and using active skills to dodge and block.

GW2 got rid of traditional quests and quests hubs, replacing them with Hearts (zones around the maps where you can do several activities to help locals, from killing enemies, to gathering stuff or fixing stuff, that will sell you items when you complete their progression bar); Dynamic Events which pop around the map, some near Hearts others in the most out of reach places and include stuff from a pack of bears attacking a bee farm, centaurs trying to blow a bridge or a Dragon attack; and personal story where you explore the story of your character and the main story line.

Gw2 is terrible. It has no endgame, it only takes less than a month to max level. It is so boring. It looks pretty, thats about it. I did not play rift long, but it was enjoyable, just don't have the timesink for it.

Rift is good but it's incredibly similar to WoW in how it works.

GW2 is a genuine breath of fresh air and is far more interesting to play.

This is probably the only thing that kept holding me back from getting GW2. I just don't want to bother doing all that stuff in an MMO.

Different people have different tastes. And that is why it is nice to have games with different strokes.

Although I find it interesting that many people say "if I wanted that I would play a fighting game or a fps shooter instead".

I don't know why certain game genres have to stick to certain features.

We wouldn't have ME if RPGs couldn't be shooters.

GW2 is terrible. Maybe the PvP is ok (haven't tried it). But the GW2 PvE is terrible. And it won't improve. It's terrible by design. The PvE-design team of GW2 (Colin Johansson and friends) are a bunch of arrogant clueless jerks. They have stated time and time again that their idea of a fun PvE-game is to put it full of fail. I won't touch that game (or anything made by the same people) with a 10-foot pole ever.

The art in GW2 is nice. Too bad the game is not.

Which is why I had to pick that sentence out of your post and address that part specifically. We don't want anyone who hate that type of thing to accidentally miss it (I almost did) and shell out $40 and be forced to do something they hate pretty much 90% of the game (combat)

I find it interesting that you say this, because the answer to this is already in your first comment above. The sentence that you quoted is "if I wanted that...". That statement is exclusive to the person who said it. It's strictly a personal preference.

I understand if someone says "I don't like action combat".
I don't understand if someone says "I like action combat but not in MMORPGs".

In your case, you said "I don't want to bother to do all that stuff in a MMORPG" which seems to imply if the game was a shooter, for example, you would enjoy to do that stuff.

Are you referring to no tanks holding aggro?

Or are you one of those MMORPG veterans that can't stand any change to the games they played 10+ years ago?

Agreed. Bought it because of all the hype/praise but I didn't care for it. I play for PvE and it's terrible... the very definition of pointless grind. The same group missions pop up in the exact same spot over and over again removing any sense of accomplishment.

Eh I don't know, I may have not said it in the clearest way possible but I did say exactly what I meant. I feel the same way about Age of Conan, for example. The additional "in an MMO" at the end was meant to be taken that I feel that this type of combat is 'invading' my favorite genre, and it is preventing me from enjoying the games I would have loved otherwise.

Again, obviously there are thousands of people out there who actually do like the way twitch-based combat is implemented in some of the recent MMORPGs, and I'm fine with that.

GW2 PVE is pretty much a single player free for all from what I played of it. meaning that no one groups, no one does the events as a team, it's just 100 people all doing their own thing. as soon as it's over scatters and goes to their next quest or next event to do the same thing over again.

When I played rift the only time I seen any group up was during a rift. And then sometimes if you wear lucky you could get a group for a instance that is why I quit I like pvp but it seemed that is the only thing others did.

Opposed to other MMORPGs were people do the quests as a 5 people party all the time...

Like once in a blue moon.
And the team play then is basically play your character.

i remember actually doing stuff with 2 of my guildmates, like running around getting the achievements and doing quests. definitely didn't do any of that in GW2.
