I think it's good to experiment with different exercises and techniques. I've always felt training is highly individualistic.
I recently saw Jay Cutler using a leg curl machine. He was on his hands and one knee facing away from the machine and using his leg to push the machines arm up and back. I'm guessing it was working his hams/gluts similar to a kick back machine - but I didn't ask, nor did I tell him he was doing it wrong - LOL.

I'm still new to the whole lifting game and when people give me advice it's very helpful...the last thing I want to do is injure myself. Though, it is kind of embarrassing knowing that you've been doing an exercise wrong for quite some time.

I rarely talk to anyone at the gym. What people do there is of no interest to me, with the exception of the old naked guys who dry their balls with the hairdryers and try to talk me when I’m trying to rush back to work.

There was a huge guy at the gym today with arms twice my size. Guy must have been in his 40s and had average sized legs compared to his arms. He goes to the squat rack to work on his legs... nope he starts doing curls. Then he went to the cable rows...to do more curls. Then he grabbed barbells, sat in an incline bench...and did MORE CURLS. I hope I'm not walking around like an oblivious douche at the gym

shens...someone with experience is not going to be in the power rack for curls.

Secondly, you do realize you may have caught him on his ARM DAY?

Incline bench curls though are great.

Why not?

I still to this day remember a guy from about 15 years ago with a pretty decent upper body and had obviously been lifting for a few years and his legs were absolutely pathetic from the calves to the quads. I know a lot of guys skip legs and just work upper but they still look kind of proportioned but this guy really looked like a flamingo, it was silly.

sadly this is usually causes by shit genetics for calves. Even Arnold has implants.

A lot just do upper body, chest and arms. I don't clown on those guys. If it gets tail, I am all for it.

ARM DAY?

wtf is that

do you even workout? Are you implying that there are no workouts out there with just an ARM DAY?

there are alot of workouts that put "Biceps/Triceps/Forearms" on a day by themselves.

It's a split like this

Chest/Back
Biceps/Triceps/Forearm
Legs/shoulders

oh wait, you are just trolling me and not really thinking though.

I have an arm day. It's usually Monday.

Sometimes I just work biceps and forearms on Monday. *gasp* I know I could get by with less bicep work, but I don't mind. I haven't missed a leg, back, shoulder, or chest workout in so long I can't remember it so it's not like I'm neglecting something else for a bicep day.

People like to criticize whatever they're not doing. It's like this in many avenues in life. If people own a plasma TV, then LCD TVs suck. If people only do compound lifts, then an arm day or shrugs are completely absurd.

I've learned to not give advice unless asked. I apply this to cars, computers, shopping for deals, exercising, etc. One thing I've learned over the years is that I don't know much. I used to give advice that I now know is wrong. If I were to volunteer my information today, it might be something that I would realize is wrong 5-10 years from now, much like the OP learned what rack pulls and box squats are when he thought the guy was doing deadlifts and squats improperly.

I didn't know what these were either, but I also wouldn't go around laughing at people doing exercises just because it's outside of my knowledge and experience. There is a whole lot more that I don't know than what I do know. With that in mind, I don't volunteer information, and I definitely wouldn't do so in a derogatory fashion.

If you have a training partner or are a coach, then by all means help your partner or pupil out. If some random person is at the gym and not in your way, then myob. Even training partners will tire of someone who thinks they know it all and laughs at them for doing exercises "wrong." If I had a partner or personal trainer who laughed me, then I'd find a new one.

He knows how to work out in order to look awesome at body-building competitions. Different people have different goals. The guys at power-lifting competitions aren't going to be the next Mr. Olympia any more than Jay Cutler is going to beat them at the power-lifting competition.

Just because someone has different goals than you doesn't mean they don't know anything about working out. Some people need to lose the myopia.

Lmao, that's a complicated way to call people short-sighted And I believe the person you're replying to was being facetious.

So I was at the gym today and I saw some younger kid doing deadlifts off the power rack in our gym. On the power rack the lowest you can go has the bar about 16 inches off the ground. I jokingly said, "Ah, c'mon man you're cheating." I just wanted to tease him a little to maybe get him to ask for some help, and the little bastard got pissed off.

I was just trying to be helpful because he obviously had no idea what he was doing. I just remember when I was new to weight lifting and I was too stubborn to ask for help. Looking back I wish people would have just spoke up and stopped me from doing certain things. Do any of you offer advice to people in the gym without them asking? Was I just being as rude as he seemed to think I was?

It's not YOU. My generation of kids (I exclude myself) is still stubborn, perhaps more than you guys were. But, we aren't good spirited or very friendly with strangers. In addition, we all think we're magically in the upper-class power-elite when we're actually more lower-middle class or middle-class than ever. 1% of the population owns over 33% of the wealth in USA. So, because of cell phones and ipods, no one should talk to us, unless their number is in our iPhone. We are paranoid, pathetic little bitches with violence on our minds. Well, not me, but most people technically included in my generation. I'm at the very end of the age range, so I'm like a liaison between generations.
