This is an awesome mouse but as already mentioned, you might as well get the entire cordless kit. Gyration specializes in presentation controllers; devices that a user would use away from the PC. This gyration mouse is a home version of their pro devices which has a much longer range (for use in large rooms). The mouse talks to a base unit over RF. The base is plugged into the computer. WHen not in use, the mouse can recharge in a cradles which is powered by a wall wart. You can use the mouse in 2 ways. On the bottom is a standard LED and optical sensor so it can act just like a regular wireless optical mouse. Pick it up and you can let the internal gyros take over. There's a recess under the unit where you index finger goes, much like a trigger position. In the recess is a button that acts like the left mouse button. So when you pick it up, you switch your grip (very intuative) and depress trigger like as you would a left mouse button. Positioning the cursor on the screen is done by simply rotating the mouse left, right, up or down. Because it's based on gyros, you don't have to point the unit at any thing; it works on relative positions of the mouse itself to a neutral level position.
So what would use this for ? For a regular PC, it's nothing more than an expensive mouse. But if you have an HTPC or some other PC that's not easily accesible, this is the ultimate controller. I use one on my HTPC. I've tested the distance on both the keyboard and mouse to over 25 ft. THe keyboard (from the suite) is not all that great for regular use due to its smaller size, but for HTPC uses, its small size is a plus since it's used less often and stores easily. The keyboard is also very rugged - stiff (won't twist) yet lightweight.
THe only negative comment I have for Gyration is their tech support. I had a problem with using their devices on a SHuttle SFF PC and they were absolutely useless over email. They eventually stopped answering my email which was just fine 'cause I solved the problem myself.
