Lol, they use an overclocked 580 when they do their initial review, and then a stock 580 when they do their overclocked 7970 review.

The images load but I click the link and it is blocked by my job's firewall (WTF?), so does it mention temps and sound? That's the card I've been eyeing, or at MSI Lightining.

Does it say how easy it was to get that OC? I'll load the article on my phone when I get a chance..

Yeah my 470's @ 960 core tear it up when I compare them to the 4870x2 at stock.

Wow, already with the nV defense force strikes? Even at OC'ed the GTX 580 would lose, why would it even matter?

Frankly, the authors should have just made it an HD 7970 stock vs the GA OC'ed version and focus on temps, noise, and power draw (I'm not sure if they did this, since I can't even load the damn article.)

Outside the OP's headline, I didn't even look at the GTX 580's numbers - now that I did, woof price cut that relic already!

I got it to load, woots Proxies FTW!

While idling at the desktop, the stock GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970's temperature was 34 degrees Celsius while the fans were running at 20%, and extremely quiet. Under full load the temperature increased to 67c, however fan speed only increased to 34%. We did not have any issue with the fans at this speed. On the overclocked GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970 we had fan speeds set to 80%, which was not as loud as most video cards, and helped remove a ton of excess heat. At idle, the video cards temperature was 25 degrees Celsius. Under full load with fans still at 80% temperature only reached 56c.

This barely tells me what I wanted to know. They ran the fan @ 80% for idle? Why? And how loud did it get? My HD 5870 is starting to sound like a hoover - must replace soon! Would love something...quieter.

Seems temps really climb when you OC the hell out of these cards. WTB Black/Red PCB - remember blue is cheap. Haha.

Amazing. The second tier 5850 at 1ghz murders the first tier 4870 of previous generation as well. Coincidence?

Jesus Christ get over yourself, I wasn't even defending Nvidia on anything. I was pointing to the fact that HardOCP has messed up testing methods, IMO of course. You're the crazy one who thinks everyone is out to attack AMD...

That is crazy power consumption.

Actually, that surprised me too. Would explain why they get crazy hot, more reason why I want to know how loud these fans are getting. My current card can get as high as 60c during gaming with no OC and at 50-60% fan speed the stock cooler on the hD 5870 sounds atrocious (I don't think I could have handled a GTX 480 at the time of launch haha.)

Oh AMD/nVidia - why do you have to chase the GPGPU sector with a one card system. WTB uber fast gaming card @ 3/4 price of uber fast gaming card + GPGPU. Less watts, less heat, more awesome!

I ordered the HD7950 version of that, picked it up today and will be putting it in my computer this evening.
Those temps look very nice. Hopefully the 7950 uses the same cooler and not a cut down heatsink + 3 fans.

Would love to hear your opinion on how loud the the fan can get. Unless the Lightining releases between now and March, this is most likely the card I'll be getting.

Well the 7970 is a freaking beast at that clock, it's running over the 580 and is faster than a 6990 or 590 at these speeds

Very nice.

See that makes me happy Since I'm coming from a HD 5870. If the fan noise is bearable, then I found my card.

Might have to fight the devil and order a month premature to our deal

The gigabyte windforce is indeed an awesome cooler. Although i'm biased toward MSI's TF3....is a lightning version coming out or no? I need answers!

I'd watch the forums to see how consistent people's clocks are on this card, a near 50% overclock on air is unheard of on a single-gpu halo part though. It's pretty insane to see clocks like that.

These charts are old news. Basically every owner of these cards have been saying since release what these charts show. While I don't run my card at 1300mhz, I can and have. I chose to stick to the set it and forget it method of CCC limits at stock fan profile and voltage which is still blazing fast at 1125/1575.

IF there are still people calling these cards underwhelming nothing is going to change that.

Definitely great performance, and a monster overclock. I do agree with some of the negative sentiment towards testing methodology at [H], but at the same time, the numbers don't lie.

I'm partial to MSI too, still waiting. They've already officially announced Twin Frozr 7950's (no release date yet), but no news on Lightning edition.

Dang, nV quick response team was fassst lol

Has anyone done any watercooling benches yet?

Say, the average oc of 950~1000mhz core 580 vs "average" oc of 1300mhz 7970?

Would really be interesting to see how far you can push the 7970m but most watercooling guys are only ocing at freaking 1200mhz that can be done on the stock cooler.

I've seen 1700 core @ 1.7v under LN2, no huge water numbers though. There is a custom 7970PCS with waterblock coming from Powercolour.
