H Mart and Kimchee = Heaven

H Mart, a Korean Supermarket chain, finally opened a store in MA a couple of months ago. Today, I decided to check it out. During the grand opening, there were articles about how people from MA would travel all the way to NY/NJ to shop at one of their stores. I've avoided going b/c I've heard traffic and parking has been crazy.

I love kimchee and was excited that they have over 40 kinds of kimchee. They even have a kimchee bar to try them out.

And Jules will find this silly but they also had a rice cooker section, there must have been close to 50 different kinds, some going for $400.

Currently, munching on some spicy radish kimchee and seaweed salad.

in houston we have a Super H Mart around the corner from a 99 Ranch Market. we're at the intersection of competing asian specialty grocery store chains (and now you don't have to drive all the way out to new chinatown to find asian specialty stuff anymore)

Yeah I never developed the taste for kimchee. Oh well, I can deal. I tried it again once this semester; not long afterwards a friend walked into my room and said "ew, something smells disgusting, like rotten. did something die in your room?"

Yeah. I usually go to Mings in the South End to get my asian food but I really liked H Mart. My only issue would be going to H Mart and dealing with the traffic/parking on the weekends.

There was one that opened in Diamond Bar, CA and I hear people from other cities travel there weekly to buy all their groceries there, too. I also heard that Seven (Korean pop star) even visited once. o_o

went to the one in Burlington few months ago. not sure if they only do it on the weekends, but with the free food samples like they do at Costco, you don't need to buy any overpriced foods from their foodcourt.

H-Mart kimchee just has way too much MSG. But it's cheap and readily available. What I love about H-Mart is that they routinely give away boxes of napa cabbage or radish for $1 as loss leaders. My wife gets a box or two and makes her own kimchee. It's hard to eat store bought kimchee if you're used to homemade.

I love the seafood from H-Mart but avoid their meats. They like to put the good meat on top of their packaging and put the subpar ones beneath so be wary. They've been accused of fresh dating expired merchandises like ramen noodles and such. I had to throw out a box of Shin ramen noodles recently. Stuff was so old and stale even though the expiration date said otherwise.

forget the weekends, traffic is awful there during the week.

If you like Kimchee, store it the way it's meant to be stored.
Get a ceramic pot , dig a hole, and store it underground.

That's how I felt about cheese, and I still do to some degree. Yeah, I like cooked cheese (pizza) but I can't handle string cheese and shit. Smells like rotten crap. Can't eat that raw.

Kimchee is the bomb. Though, being half-korean, I'm biased to a certain extent.

My personal preference is for when it's close to freshly made.

Ah, yes. I've been to the Mississauga location. There's six out here in Ontario. Owned by Lablaws apparently. I can get lost in there for hours. Vegetables are really cheap too. Definitely a far cry from those grimy stores in Toronto's Chinatown. I haven't been in a while.

My girlfriend shops at H-Mart. There's a few in the DC area. I think she mostly just goes there to buy Japanese sweets.

I know, that's why I went today. When they first opened, I did drive by on a weekend and the cars trying to get to the parking lot were backed-up all the way to the entrance of the plaza. You had to go to the back entrance if you wanted to go front plaza.

Yes, they had samples today. Missed the marinated rib eye barbeque samples.

if you have a big jar of kimchee and you are almost out, it is time for stew. pour what's left of the kimchee into a pot and add pork, preferably with some bone, and water to taste. i add a little bit of water because i like it spicy and salty. my wife adds a butt load of water which makes it bland and more soupy. boil and simmer. it goes well with hot steamed calrose rice.:awe:

anyway, the one here in Diamond Bar/Walnut is very nice and upscale. Prices are not bad too.

anyway, I was shocked when I was in Denver and witnessed the large amount of Korean population. I saw a relatively small supermarket selling kimchee by the gallon (in a trash bag size)
