h50 problem?

Finally put together my computer today. I'm getting unreasonably high on my i7 2600k (87-88C). Ambient temp was around 22C. I have not installed anything yet and that was the temps I saw from BIOS. I think I installed the H50 correctly. I took off the cpu block to see if anything was wrong.

This is what I got:

I know very little about modern intel sockets, but it looks like that metal bit around the CPU is getting in the way, judging from the paste on it in picture #2. Is it removable, or is it part of the retention mechanism?

edit: Nah, that ain't it, but I'd try mounting it again. If you've mounted and tightened the screws sufficiently, plugged in the fans and pump, and you're still hitting those temps there's something wrong with your H50.

You leave the MB a little loose and twist the block. Once the block is in you tighten the mount down. You did do this? Does it sound like the pump is working?

@deimos3428: haha yeah that was the plate to hold the cpu down. I'll try mounting the cooler again once I clean up the paste and apply a new batch.

@Kenmitch: Yes I did what you did. I could heard the pump running. I felt vibrations from the tubes. The fan for the radiator was also working.

u also use quite a bit of thermal paste. try a thinner layer. too thick of a layer actually hinders the heat transfer.

That was the preapplied paste that Corsair put on the H50.

He has poor contact in the center....

you can tell by the imprint..

man... at this point its either the sink not being flat... or its the cpu ihs...

There is no clean solution to this... you need to bust out the sand paper and start lapping.

Okay, just applied a new batch of TIM (MX-2). Idles at 28-30C, and running prime95 now. It's at 60C. Hopefully, no problems will arise over night.

I have used Corsair's pre applied grease and AS5 both with good success. I agree with Aigomorla you didn't have a good center contact on that first try. I had the same thing happen to me the first time I used a H50 unit in a build.
