I'm working on the video for the new method. Testing out a couple things. Should be nice and short, only a few minutes long. Be out by the end of the week.

Nice and short and only a few minutes long? Sounds like a Saturday night with the misses!

If you could include a short bit (text would be fine) on switching from a usb-stick setup to this stick-less one without a full re-install, it would be much appreciated !

Thanks

I'm looking forward to the video and to getting my hackintosh set up next week. Should be a nice little boost for me in all regards. My MacBook is currently my most CPU powerful system, but the 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo that I am ordering should blow it out of the water.

By all accounts it seems that setting it up should take almost no time at all, and I already have Leopard on a hard drive (an iPod actually) which should help.

Just for comparison.. I installed via the USB method (which will take longer than the new BootCD/Chameleon method).. and I was up and running in an hour. That was with no previous knowledge of how to do. Of course, a lot of the reason why I was able to get it done so fast was because of Kaido's amazing support.

So thanks again!

I am using the usb stick method and it works great. Are we losing anything by putting the Bootloader, EFI Emulation system, and hardware drivers on the harddrive? I thought the advantage of the usb method was no overwrites from apple updates. I look forward to the new method, just curious if there are any impacts of it vs. the usb method?

No overwrites in the new system. The only change is if you clone, you have to install Chameleon to the cloned drive. There's a simple installer to do that with. Also, it boots faster now.

USB Stick to Hard Drive Boot Conversion Kit:

Download this:

http://www.mediafire.com/?shar...c1dea6d2db6fb9a8902bda

1. Download the file, double-click the DMG to mount it, then Alt-click on the mounted DMG and drag it (alt-click-drag, that is) to the desktop (creates a folder of the DMG)

2. Inside the folder, double-click on the "Extra Contents" folder and delete the "Extra" folder if you have it, then copy "Extensions.mkext" to the "Extra Contents" folder

3. Install "Chameleon_DFE_for_Hard_Disk.pkg" on your boot drive (might want to turn down your speakers, you'll thank me later)

4. Eject the BOOT132 stick and unplug it

5. Reboot

If you Leopard hard drive isn't set as the first drive in Boot Priority, you may want to change it. You can always use F12 at BIOS POST to choose which boot drive you want if you have other operating systems installed. You no longer need the USB stick to boot up. Booting will be faster because it doesn't need to load the Linux bootloader on the USB stick anymore.

I have this board with OSX + Chameleon on the HDD (before I discovered Kaido's guide). But OSX is not quite right - sleep, shutdown, AboutThisMac, Unity-mode in VMWare, etc.

Would it (likely) help to use the tools on Kaido's USB tool set (aboutthismac.pkg, EFIStudio) to update it?

Thanks.

So I'm a bit confused...would love to try this "new" method, but obviously I'm not converting anything. I didn't see the steps in the OP. Am I missing something?

(And where is that Boot123 CD iso? Is that in the d/l package?)

More important question: When the hell are the FedEx and UPS guys going to get here with my toys?

Most important question: Where am I going to find a DL DVDr at this hour, and do I really need one?

The new method just gets rid of the USB stick. Same as the old method, but the bootloader is now on the hard drive using the "easy" way (Chameleon) instead of the "hard" way (copying the USB stick to a hidden EFI partition). The modification is listed a few posts above yours, complete with a download package.

Yes, the BOOT132CD iso file is in the download package.

Be glad you didn't use DHL

Yes, you need a DL-DVD, UNLESS you have access to a Mac computer that can format a SATA hard drive. Then you can work the magic from the hard drive installation method.

I'm working on the video. So far it's about 20 minutes long. I go over the motherboard, video card, how to burn an ISO file, how to install Leopard, how to setup the software, and a few other basics. Should be out by this weekend. Much shorter than I previously anticipated.

Request for BOOT-132 users:

Please enable onboard IDE and test your IDE devices. I didn't realize the the original creator of this particular BOOT-132 distribution had added an updated Jmicron kext. It is supposed to fix the Jmicron IDE issues. So please plug them in and test them over the next week and report back if you experience any kernel panics, slow performance, or other glitches in your system.

Yikes, my memory stick setup was working, should have left well enough alone :-(

It now reboots to the grey apple, spins a bit, and then a dark grey curtain descends with:

You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power ... or Restart button.

Putting the stick back in makes no difference. Must learn not to mess with a working hackintosh

I had the same problem. Not to worry. Reboot using the boot 132 disk, choose the hard drive (80) to get back into OSX, then reinstall Chameleon following the instructions of Kaido and KeypoX (see below)

Download this:

http://www.mediafire.com/?shar...c1dea6d2db6fb9a8902bda

1. Download the file, double-click the DMG to mount it, then Alt-click on the mounted DMG and drag it (alt-click-drag, that is) to the desktop (creates a folder of the DMG)

Rosebud1: I tried - put the memory stick back in (boot132), loads up syslinux, choose the hard drive --> no more grey curtain. Instead I get hung up on grey apple + spinner.

Aargh

Edit: Duh! I will read more carefully. Am about to try with the bootCD. Will post back in a bit.

did you copy Extensions.mkext to the Extra Contents folder and delete the Extras folder inside the Extra Contents folder?

I thought I did, but probably messed up something. I've recovered from a superduper clone, back running via the usb-stick, will wait for the Video

btw, I have had intermittent video strangeness - only in BIOS, not noticed it at all in OSX. The normally yellow or white text will - unpredictably - turn all pink, or all blue. I am using 8600GT fanless. Anyone else see anything similar? Could it be the video card? The mobo?

Thanks

Sounds like an SMBIOS problem to me. I've never had a problem with shutdown with this board (only installed it with Leo4allv3, but I know it works with Kalyway, and retail)- sleep definitely works with this board, but I've never spent any time figuring it out since I don't use it. From the sounds of it, I don't think any of the listed tools would help much with what you're describing- EFIStudio will fix graphic strings, and other components, but not much else. Aboutthismac might fix some issues for abtm,- but the right SMBIOS fix is probably a better solution.

Try the imac version from here. Install using kext helper.

Need testers with a spare drive available. All you need is a blank CD and a copy of Leopard, along with a working DS3L system. Especially looking for EP35 testers. Testing the final system (different approach, now with integrated 10.5.6 support).

Should I have gotten an Ep35 board?

I just put together my rig. With a partitioned hard drive, it's running XP really well. Now for OS X!

So, I tried the new BootCD and kaido's short list of directions on the previous page. It booted off the BootCD, but when it asked me to press Enter, I was stuck - it wouldn't read from my USB keyboard. Any guesses? Am I missing something obvious? I'm borrowing a friend's PS/2 keyboard tonight to see if that will work any better.
