If I do This Method can I install Chameleon RC3 and not worry about changing boot files? And then I could install my 4870 Kext and work for the most part?

I got it all setup I believe, but now when booting into SL I get "Mac Os Version Not Yet Set" Anyone know what this might be?

Okay, Snow Leopard arrived today (finally) and I installed it to an 8 Gb USB stick and now I have it installed on my UD3P test partition using stellarola's install pkg. (Test 2). I had to reset my video in BIOS to PEG from PEG2 which killed my 3rd monitor. But I didn't figure I would be able to use a more general install with a 3 monitor setup, so I suppose I will have to work on my DSDT to get the second video card to work. Sound works great, have updated to 10.6.1 and things seem fine. I do have a question for anyone in the know, the only HD showing on my desktop is the USB stick I used to install with, where are the HD icons? Will take some time to figure out the small changes, I like the Applications folder in the dock, very handy. I suppose next on my list is working on the DSDT, now I guess it's time to do more reading.

You might need to go into the Finder Preferences (click on the desktop and then hit CMD+,) and make sure that you have hard drives selected to be shown on the desktop.

I think when you do a clean install, that option is not checked. I did a clean Leopard install on a PowerBook and that box wasn't checked, but anytime I have reinstalled using included disks that was set.

But yes, other things have been fiddled with as well from leopard to snow leopard.

I will have to look into all this, I want to get Snow Leopard on my Hack on the same drive as my Windows 7 install.

If anyone could point me to a guide, that would be appreciated.

Technically you can upgrade, but it's a bit tricky. I use Snow 64-bit, so you need 64-bit drivers, so you have to remove ALL your old Hackintosh files & settings, upgrade, put the 64-bit stuff in, and go from there. I've heard of at least one person doing it successfully, but you have to know what you're doing!

Ok, So it seems SL is a leap forward with the 64 bit OS, besides an optimization. I'm buying the family pack and will install when the new guides hit the street!

So far that is all I've tried using. As Kaido said it has a lot to do with 64-32 bit modes. A good example is my Samsung laser printer. It installed and is working fine in 10.5.8, but in 10.6.1 running 64 bit it installs, but you can't print to it. I've heard others complain that CUPS doesn't work and on mine Bonjour doesn't work, but it's because I'm using the onboard e-net.

As I just told someone in a PM, all these installs right now should be considered test installs. If you are looking for a stable everyday OS, use 10.5.8 until a thoroughly tested package (like Kaido's will be ) is available for Snow. HTH

Typing this from my DS3L running 10.6.0. I used a generic snow boot 132 iso I found on Insanely and I have it installed on a scratch HD. No sound and video limited to 1024x768, but it works! And it is fast also. Currently running in 64 bit mode. I can't believe I got this far and now I'm having problems installing Chameleon v2.0 rc3. This version is not a package type install, but rather a binary. The instructions are a bit cryptic for me, but I will get it eventually.

Congrats! It wont be long and this process will be as simple as before. I went to best buy to buy snow and the goofs dont stock it. Thats a special order! Ridiculous.

Yeah, it's just a waiting game. Same as Leopard - it's ridiculously easy to install Leopard on a compatible board nowadays

Got the DS3L booting on it's own now with the help of a Chameleon v2 rc3 installer pkg I found on Insanely. Had to make sure I had a DSDT in the root folder as well as smbios and I found a set of kext from a DS3L SL install guide also on Insanely. Put those in the Extra/Extensions folder and now I have sound! Still looking for a proper video card string which needs to be in the boot.plist file IIRC. Too late to do much else this evening but I feel I made good progress so far.

A little off topic at the moment, but does anyone know of a PCI SATA card that works with the DS3L? Only having four SATA ports is killing me..

Okay, I have the DS3L video problem solved and most everything seems to be working with the possible exception of bonjour. iTunes can't see my freenas music server but it sees it fine in 10.5.8. The problem was a preboot.dmg in the root folder that should not have been there. Removing that made both 24" monitors respond with full resolution. Now System Profiler thinks I have a 512 Mb 8800GT, but I hope to fix that by a proper patching of the DSDT. Where is machinist when you need him. Hope to get my 3rd display up and running as soon as I can find a proper driver for the HIS Multi-View in 64 bit Snow. May give the old one a try if I can booted in 32 bit mode.

I have the ud3p kit; and lately my ethernet just stops working. I thought it was sleep related but it seems to be totally random, and the only way i've been able to fix it is to unplug and plug back in the ethernet. This is on both ports.

Anyone seen this?
