I tested making bootable clones on both the DS3L & UD3P within the past week, both work great. Hmm. Well, the final package will be released soon, along with BIOS settings, so if you want we can give that a shot

Thought I was on to something but now I'm not sure what to make of it. The UD3P would not make a bootable clone even when running the DS3L install package. Guess I'll just have to wait for the final package and see what bios settings you are using as that is the only thing left that I can think of.

Ah the world of Hacks, where things that should work don't, and things that shouldn't work do. Gotta love it!

Mystery solved. Call it stupidity on my part, these drives were both removed from my file server, which is a PPC Mac and I remembered that when I repartitioned the first one as my main HD, but just erased the second one to use as my backup, so it was still partitioned as a Mac drive using the APM.
Repartitioned to GPT and all is well now. Lesson learned, don't mess with these things when you are too tired to hold your eyes open!

One more sleep related thingee: When it "wakes up" from sleep, it's like I've never logged in. All my apps are closed and stuff. So I'm wondering if it's resetting itself or hibernating or dying and being revived by a 18th-level Cleric or what.

But I'll check that out!

(Although I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to do with it. )

Okay, one sleep-related "bug" has been fixed.

Or, rather, I just realized I'm an idiot.

I had "log out after an hour' selected. So my computer would go to sleep (after two hours) but I'd be logged out after one. Explains why my apps were always closed. So that's taken care of. Still don't know what's up with 1). the CD drive seek issue, 2). Apps choking off sleep mode and 3). hot-plug eSATA (my external enclosure is sorta finicky it seems with regards to that. Or maybe I just don't know how to hot plug in OSX. OR even if it supports it).

alright, I knew I disappeared for a while. For some reason, when I upgraded to 10.5 the s-video out stopped working, but the machine was booting properly. I was using s-video because I was outputting on an old tv I had lying around, because I was doing all the work in the living room.

Anyway, after getting everything hooked up, it works and works great. I have boxee running to my 52" tv and i couldn't be happier. The only problem I'm having is I can't get the fan to shut up. It runs constantly, and loudly. I'm using an old hp case I got from a friend because it's just sitting in the closet behind the TV so looks didn't matter to me and I was able to save some cash not getting a case and powersupply. I have the fan hooked into the first system fan spot on the mother board, and it runs non stop. I can't find how to stop it, or at least change it's thresh hold in BIOS, and I've downloaded a few fan applications on line, and none of them seem to do anything.

After getting everything up and running, I was contemplating eventually making one of these machines for my full time power desktop rig once snow leopard is out and we find out if it can work on hackintosh. However, I need to know for sure that I will be able to control the fans better, because I wouldn't be able to work with a computer growling underneath my desk whenever I'm trying to work. Any suggestions?

would the lower power still keep the case cool?

I'm more worried about just turning it off when it's not necessary to be running then making it run quieter, but still run all the time.

I have been reading this a few similar forums. This thread took a long time to read. I have to say thanks to the contributors and of course, Kaido.

Soon I'll be joining your ranks and bugging you all with questions..

Just an update, the packages are finished, I'm just running through final testing of the new procedure tonight. If I get some free time this weekend, I'll throw the guides up and a new thread.

Whew!

Is the fan in the front or back? If in the front, moving it to the back might help. I have a clearcase system with 5 case fans, now we're talking noisy!

Here's what I am looking to use in building my HTPC and I'm wondering if anyone has any comments/suggestions/warnings on this recipe:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
G.Skill (2) 2GB DDR2 1066
2 Samsung Spinpoint F1 Series 1TB
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA
Nvidia GEFORCE 8600GT 1GB
Arcitc Cooling Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX

LIAN LI Black Aluminum PC-C37B Micro ATX (but it might be too short for the 8600GT and the Arctic Freezer)
or
ARK Black Aluminum / Steel HTPC 400BA Black ATX

This is going to be connected to my 108" HDTV projector and A/V receiver, so I was thinking of using a DVI to HDMI adapter or using a Gigabyte E7AUM-DS2H that has HDMI on board. I wanted to try this for a while and only after reading Leopard Soup am I willing to try.

Crap. I forgot. Any suggestions on a good audio card to get DD, 5.1, 7.1 or DTS or any of that?

Oh, and I'm going to do the Apple remote hack last.

Okay, the new install procedures have been tested and finalized There are 2 methods:

1. DVD install
2. HDD install

DVD install lets you install Leopard from a retail disc. If you already have a Mac and can plug your Hackintosh's SATA boot drive into it, then you can save yourself about 30 minutes and just install from your existing Leopard desktop.

DVD Install Method:
1. BootCD
2. Leopard DVD
3. Uinstaller (from the Desktop, after setup)

HDD Install Method:
1. Leopard ISO (from an existing Mac)
2. BootCD (for initial setup)
3. Uinstaller (from the Desktop, after setup)

The difference between the HDD and DVD method is simply that the HDD method lets you install in about 15 minutes (provided you have an existing Mac to work from) instead of 45 minutes from the DVD disc. It's simply a convenience thing. The big change from the previous method is the way in which we do the HDD method. When Leopard is installed to a hard drive, it creates what we'll call "temporary permissions".

These temporary permissions need to be initialized by setup to become "permanent permissions". By installing a Combo Update and/or Uinstaller items using the HDD method, those temporary permissions get messed up and are not properly initialized by setup because some parts have been overwritten by the Combo Update and by Uinstaller. So the solution is simple: install Leopard, then reboot and pop in the BootCD to do initial setup, then install Uinstaller at the desktop (and whatever other updates there are). It's a small change, but this way those temporary permissions don't get messed up, and then we don't have weird errors (like the screensaver issue) and things that Repair Permissions can't fix (comes out perfectly clean now).

What's next:
1. Testing is done, everything works well now
2. Need to redo DS3L package with updates
3. Need to package DS3L & UD3P final packages
4. Need to write tutorials for the Wiki
5. Need to post new threads with info

So the good news is, everything works great now! The next step is to wrap up the packages and document everything. If I don't have to work this weekend, I'll throw everything up then. It's been a long road and I'm very happy with the current iteration of the project

fan is in the back... This really is a deal breaker for me...

while the HTPC works fine since it site in a closet and the noise isn't an issue, if I were to build another one of these bad boys for a desktop I wuold need better control over the fans. I'm surprised no one has written a fan control application, as I can't be the only person in this situation.

Worse... it won't take the ATX mobo.

Go with the second case, or another, but it has to be ATX compatible to fit the UD3P board.

For 5.1 on my HTPC-Hack, I use a Griffen Firewave. Unfortunately, discontined, but you can probably still find them floating around for about $20.

Yes! have been having the screensaver issue, but did not think it was worth mentioning. Another thing that is much worse is that some files just won't empty from the trash, I tried many and all methods mentioned on the net. So I can only attribute it to the permission issue.

so hope a fresh install might solve that issue. but my way of installing the hack is still 1)installing kalyway first, 2)partitioning harddisk, 3)placing system image on the smaller partition, 4)rebooting through boot cd and correct flags and then installing system from smaller hd partition to bigger size partition.

somehow I am not able to install from retail DVD image directly. Can I consider my installation method same as HDD method mentioned above(aside from new order of installation as outlined above of course)?

I'm having an issue while trying to install from a retail Leopard disc. Here's how I'm installing and the issue I'm having:

This is on a P35-DS4

-Boot with 132 disc
-Swap discs for leopard retail.
-Install (it says "Install Failed" at the end, I assumed because it's unable to reboot the PC)
-Boot with 132 disc again and select HD (device 80) and I am able to get into Leopard and everything works fine.
-Install 10.5.6 Combo update but don't reboot yet.
-Install Chameleon with PCEFI v9
-Run OSX86 Tools and install kexts for my hardware.
-Reboot

After I reboot it will boot directly to the HD without the 132 disk, but it keeps giving me a message on the grey screen that says something about the machine needing to be rebooted. I rebooted about 3 more times and it continues to say this but never actually makes it into the Leopard desktop. Any ideas?

mohkahn, where you been, haven't heard from you in awhile? The trash thing, do you have Windows on this same drive? I had an issue where Windows was the culprit as to why the trash would not empty. I don't remember the specifics right now, but the solution presented worked for me.

I have a friend who is on this forum (but dosn't post much) who did 2 DS4's. I sent him your comments and here is his reply:

I used the P35 install method for the two DS4s (one was an early one, called a P35, but it was Rev. 2.1; the other was called an EP35, and it was also Rev. 2.1) and it worked flawlessly on both, until each of them died.

The P35 lasted 3 hours before "death".

The EP35 lasted 30 minutes before "death".

I believe the P35 Kit is the right install for these boards.

The Firewire, which is not part of a normal P35, is recognized by MacOS as the TI chip set is the same one which Apple supports.

Good catch, Zaap. Thanks. I like the smaller form factor. So what is the word on getting the GA-E7AUM-DS2H to work? That should fit the smaller case and I love the outputs..I want it to look decent in the living room with the rest, the Sat receiver, AV receiver, Oppo.

Thanks for the DD suggestion.
