It started out pretty good, several initial posts, but it has dropped off considerably. Of course with any list it takes a little time and I only started this a couple of days ago. :thumbsup:

We'll look forward to your comments.

Hi,

Can someone help me with a problem I am having.

I have put some files i wanted to send a mate on an external IDE drive of mine - i formatted it as Windows NT in leopard (this is ntfs correct? ) then i have disconnected the drive and sent it to him.

Now he has connected in via his external enclosure and it is saying unpartitioned volume in windows. He tried using macdrive to read it but that doesnt detect an partitions .... ?

thankyou in advance for help.

How did you format it as NTFS in Leopard? Leopard won't do NTFS by itself, you need a MacFUSE and NTFS-3g to format. I believe Leopard will read NTFS by itself. Does it show up in Disk Utility? If it can be seen in Disk Utility, does it show up as formatted? Inquiring minds need to know!

I formatted it as Windows NT Filesystem from within disk utility. I know the mac can not normally write to ntfs however I do have paragon. But the formatting was all done by disk utility and I selected Windows NT Filesystem, is that not NTFS ? (the files i transferred were well in excess of the 4gb fat32 limit) I thought leopard can format NTFS and read NTFS but can not write to it natively.

And yes i transferred about 100gig of data to it so it was detected, seen as a partition and fully functional by mac it is now that he cant read it on a windows machine. he doesn't have a mac so I can do no further testing with a mac.

I understand why you did as you did, the file size limit of the FAT partition is a problem, but Disk Utility as it comes with OS X cannot format a partition as NTFS. The Paragon utility is what allows that to happen. It peforms basically the same function as NTFS-3G (MacFUSE), but at a price. The fact that it was an external drive complicates the whole process even more, but I fear the Paragon formatting of the drive is the problem. That is why I ALWAYS format the drive to be used by both systems using the native OS and not a utility that is supposed to work. I feel it is much safer with important data this way. Being as your friend does not have a Mac I'm afraid the data on that drive will not be readable by him. I've had problems in the past using a Mac to format FAT drives where they were unreadable by a Windows system, It's just always best to format any drive with the OS that is native to that format. Have your mate format the drive on his Windows system and send it back to you for you to copy the files back to it and then send it back to him. A lot of trouble, but that should work. HTH

Thanks mate.
Yeh looks like that is what I will have to do. On another forum someone suggest I may have had the partition table as GUID and windows cant read that? has to be MBR. oopps.

That depends on which version of Windows he is using. I believe both XP and Vista can handle GPT drives. I know Vista can as I have some of my Hacks running Leopard and Vista on the same drive formatted using GPT.

someone suggested GPT only works with 64bit vista or xp.
Is your vista install 32 or 64 ?

I just had a look and in disk utility my settings were set to MBR, hmm..

I've had both x32 and x64 running on GPT formatted drives. As I said before have him do the drive format (NTFS) via Windows and when you get it make sure you can read and write to it. If you can then you should be good to go once you write the files to it and send it back to him. That should work but as always, YMMV

BTW, just want to say my Hack is running flawlessly! Now that you've done the screensaver fix, I don't have any more problems with my machine. In fact, I mainly use it as just a stream box, but recently hooked it up to my 24" Dell to do some testing for work, and it is SO fast! I'm thinking of building another one as a replacement for my aging Macbook Pro. I love my notebook, but this thing works so well.. I feel it's almost necessary to do.

No, building a Hackintosh wasn't necessary...all you have to do is upgrade the CPU in the new Mini if you want a faster Mac to fit your budget. Er, wait a minute...I mean just get the Quad-Core iMac. Oops, I mean, buy the Mac Pro Lite...ahh...sorry, you're right

I'm using Kaido's install kit on my UD3P and it works great, but the sound comes out the black port instead of the normal green one. Then when I switch to Vista I either have to do without sound or switch the plug on the back of the computer. Anyone have a better kext/driver for OS X which allows the normal green port to be used? I know I can use a USB dongle, which I have, but I really would rather use the on board sound if at all possible.

Edit: Never mind, I got it working okay now. The green port in OS X works just fine, it just says speakers out instead of line out.

Can anyone make a Bluetooth suggestion? I want to add it to my setup for keyboard and mouse. What is the word on buying a USB bluetooth or a PCIe?

This was posted in response to Kaido's Final Call for Hardware Peripherals over on Insanely.

USB Bluetooth dongles:
- D-Link DBT-120
- IOGear GBU321
Both are plug and play

I'm sure it will be included on the Wiki, but I figured you may not want to wait quite that long. HTH

Thanks! I looked over there too. Their search function is a mess.

That helps a lot as all parts are arriving and I want to use the Apple wireless keyboard. Just perfect for my setup. I think the wiki will arrive just in time or close as I expect to have all the parts in a week. I received my Lian Li 351 case insanely fast, one day, actually when it was supposed to come UPS ground. Only bummer is their picture showed the black one, I ordered the aluminum. Not a big deal, but it doesn't match everything else.

Hmm. I'll try leaving it on this screen tonight and see what happens. Thanks mosslack.

No, the DSDT is NOT needed. If leaving it on for a long time doesn't work, do try Kaido's DS3L kit as it does work. HTH

Ok. I've finally gotten a chance to try this. Waiting for the restart screen to go away didn't work.

I tried Kaido's package and it worked! I have one annoying issue at this point. I selected my graphic card using Kaido's UInstaller (1900XT 512MB) and I can't select any resolution other than 1600x1200. I looked back through the thread and saw a suggestion to select "detect displays" but I don't have this option. Any idea how I can get 1900x1200 going?

Quartz Extreme and Core Image are both working, just no other resolutions are selectable.

Edit: Nevermind. I used the Jccool EFI installer and it got everything working properly. Thanks for all the help mosslack.

Glad to hear it and you are quite welcome. Peter on the HQ-A list gets the credit for this and I'll be sure he is aware of it.

Serious issue is troubling me:

1) I have an external usb harddisk, on which I have 3 partitions. 1)ntfs (for windows) 2)mac partition 3)fat (for linux).

Few days ago I changed the fat to ntfs also for backing up bigger size files of linux.

The disk has suddenly stopped working. I pulled it out of windows when it was off and put it in mac and mac gave me the option to 1)initialize, 2)ignore, 3)eject and it shows up on diskutility,but I can't get it to open.

on windows systems when it was working I was using macdrive to move files to/from the mac partition.

I don't know what has caused it to malfunction, but it gets recognized by mac / windows but both of them refuse to open it.

in windows when i can hear it plugging in and plugging out, and I can see it in the storage media (if I right click my computer and click manage) but disk management says I need to initialize it, but when i try doing that, it just says, some kind of I/O error happened.

I also uninstalled the usb drivers from vista, uninstalled macdrive, installed a SPTD drive, but nothing has worked so far.

I know the data is there on the disk, but somehow it just does not connect to both windows / mac. it's like someone is at their door, but does not know how to open the door to enter into their home. If i click on safely remove icon, i can also see it listed there and it removes it successfully.

Please help anyone, there are tonnes of books that I spent weeks (... ahem...) downloading and sorting and categorizing and doing the same work again will simply drain half my life out of me. please i really need suggestions on fixing this problem? should I reinstall vista to see if the driver problem will be corrected? mac is freshly installed without support for ntfs I guess, but it should still read the mac partition fine. right?

Sounds like a bad deal mohkahn, I know this doesn't help, but in the future perhaps maybe do a backup before you go changing things around. As for the problem, I think I would give Disk Warrior or even a Windows based (Norton's) disk utility/repair type program a shot. You say it shows up in disk utility but it won't open, can you do a verify or repair operation on it? Maybe someone else might have a better idea, I hope so.

Ok, waiting for the 'Egg to deliver. What will be there first? The new Wiki or my packages...?

Guess I'll have to get to making the remote receiver in the meantime...

Some interesting notes on video cards:

8800GT
8800GTS 512MB = 8800GT (faster version)
9800GT = 8800GT
9800GTX = 8800GTS (overclocked)
9800GTX = 9800GTX (overclocked thanks to 55nm die shrink)
GTS 250 = 9800GTX+

Thus we see that a GTS 250 is nothing more than an overclocked 8800GT. The 9800GTX+ has been tested as 100% working in OS X (you'll need 10.5.6 for fan control). Performance-wise, a GTS 250 is approximately equivalent to an ATI 4850. I haven't found anyone who has actually installed a GTS 250 yet, but I'd imagine it would work with some EFI Strings editing. Also:

GT120 = rebranded (renamed) 9500GT (G96)
GT130 = rebranded (renamed) 9600GT (G94)

Kaido, any suggestions on using UInstaller with a E7AUM? The NVIDIA 9400 isn't in there so I'll just leave that unchecked, but I am cobbling the DSDT and other kexts that people have used, with varying success.

Also, is there anything you want me to test with this board? I am installing after work, about 10 hours from now. Also, I read at ISM that people are using the ALU/Unibody Macbook install DVD for the E7AUM and having luck. I have a friend that just got one for work. You have any thoughts on that?
