Mosslack, careful what you wish for. This is a bit long.

So I learned a lot, with much more to do to be sure. I used a lot of the Leopard Soup 2.0 as my guide and I'll be happy to answer questions or test things for the upcoming WIki. The thread at ISM on the E7AUM-DS2H has proven invaluable. If I believe what I read there, it seems this board is well suited as a hackintosh, as it is a close to the new MBP.

First, my setup again:
E7AUM-DS2H
2 GB DDR 800 RAM
2.5GHz E5200
Samsung Spinpoint 1TB SATA
Lian Li PC-351
Thermaltake 500W PS
Samsung SATA DVD

The first attempt was made using the BootCD and Retail Leopard. Simply wouldn't work.

Next attempt was made using a DVD from a new MacBook Pro. That didn't work work either as it panicked and I couldn't get anywhere with that method.

First Attempt
Then as I mentioned before, I read where someone used an external USB HD to install. This was not without failures and I am still not 100% working, but I believe that I will be. First, I partitioned the USB HD in 2 partitions. I used the MBP DVD and restored to one partition. I swapped out the OSInstall.mpkg which bypasses the model check and allows installation to proceed. (without that changed out, the install would refuse to install on anything but a MacBook Pro) I installed on the 2nd partition. I used UInstaller and applied the DSDT patch, set the timeout to 8 seconds, made my resolution to 1024 x 768, the PC_EFI v9 and the EFI Time machine fix. For one reason or another, this didn't work. Too many panics and I wiped out the 2nd partition to start fresh, as I added and subtracted kexts in a very stupid way.

Second Attempt
Yesterday, I prepared the 2nd of the USB HD with 10.5.5 from the 1st partition. I upgraded it to 10.5.6 by downloading the stand alone upgrader. I used UInstall to install PC_EFI v9, set 8 second timeout, and the kexts from Darwin via grub-dfe.iso, dsmos.kext, APIPS2Nub.kext, IntelCPUMDisabler.kext, SMBIOSEnabler.kext. I manually installed these kexts and then used Disk Utility to repair permissions, as I also read that improper permissions would prevent things from working properly. (I don't know if what I did was proper or even helped.) I copied NVkush to the 2nd partition, so I could run it on that volume once it booted. First attempt at booting with -v , panic at AppleSMC.kext removed that. Kernel panic from something at/around AppleACPTPlatform.kext or IOAPCIFamily.kext. Removed them and replaced them with AppleSMBIOS.kext, AppleAPIC.kext and AppleACPIPlatform.kext. I booted up with -v and -x. Success!

I looked around and the expected things were non functional. The processor in "About This Mac" was off, the sound didn't work, the wireless didn't work. I used the About This Mac Modifier to change that. Then I installed the sound fixes from Signal64 here: ( http://www.insanelymac.com/for...=1036242&#entry1036242 post #229). Sound works, digital sound too. Then I got my Linksys Wirelss G USB to work with RT2500USBWirelessDriver.kext RAlink makes the chipset for the version 4 of the WUSB54G. I screwed up entering in more kexts, I installed AppleDecrypt.kext and dsmos.kext. Don't do that. You only need either one or the other. To anyone that would be proceeding in a hit-or-miss manner like me, take it slow and note what you do. I wish I had.

Remember that this is all on a USB external HD. Now, as I have things running seemingly decent, I thought I'd chance copying things over to the internal HD. I used CCC. Rebooted. Nothing. I used SuperDuper! and nothing. The internal wouldn't show as a bootable drive. I used manual commands, to no avail. Then I read that you need to reinstall PC_EFI v9 on the cloned drive. So I did, still, it won't show as bootable.

Where I am now

I am trying to get the internal HD to be bootable. I have tried to bless the system folder, I have run SuperDuper! again and it can't make it bootable. I am going to work on that. The USB Wireless works, but in a crappy way. I need to unplug/replug it, then the system sees it and connects. Maybe there is a way to fix that, but I am likely using ethernet when this is in its final space. There is a BIOS update for this MB, but I can't get the board to see the USB stick (FAT format) with the update on in while in CMOS. Reboot doesn't work. Shut down does, after installing another of Signal64's kexts. I can't recall which one. I guess that makes my point of proceeding slowly and taking notes.

Known issues on this board are that it can only use 2GB RAM **IF YOU USE THE ON BOARD NVIDIA 9400**. If you have a separate card, you can get around that. I read it is a memory space allocation using 32bit addressing vs 64 bit addressing. No fix that I know of as yet. Also, restart doesn't work.

On Monday, my USB enclosure arrives and if I haven't solved this by then, I'll take the internal HD and put it in the enclosure (SATA connecters inside) and copy that over or start again. That should do it as a last resort. I hope.

For the fun of it, I ran a Geekbench and the machine scored a 3841 and I haven't done anything as far as overclocking. That's about it. I'm back to working on it now.

Kaido, again, thanks for your hard work. I wouldn't have attempted this if not for you. If there is anything you want me to do/test/etc, please let me know.

I have one Samsung HD103UH 1TB HDDs right now and am thinking of picking up another to put in RAID-0. Is it possible to partition some of the space for use with Windows 7 Beta and have the RAID setup? (Say 1.5TB OS X .5TB Win)

WOW! Quite a story there Eastwind. I can't believe you are already working on it again. Does sound like you have a handle on it now though. As for booting from the onboard HD, I'm sure that Chameleon has to be reinstalled after you clone the ext HD, but that was all that was required for the DS3L and UD3P installs. I'm confident that you will work that out given that you have gotten this far. Way to go!

Thanks Mosslak!

I am deep into it again. It dawned on me that I could simply install 10.5.5 from the 1st partition. So I did. Still *isn't* bootable. WTF? Seriously...

Now I am scratching my head why my FAT32 formatted USB stick won't recognized on boot by the board! I am trying to update the BIOS and that isn't happening either.

I know I'll get this figured out, but this is a great board and it will make a fine Hackintosh.

I'm back at it. Thanks to a cold, I'm going nowhere tonight.

Are there any drivers out there... the will work with Mirror Mode Enabled? As of now... my secondary display works but my main display goes blank and displays an arrow cursor.

More like what mouse. If it doesn't have drivers for OSX, you might be stuck. My Razer doesn't and the default mouse acceleration really messes things up. It's unusable.

There's that 8x00-series bug that makes a jumpy mouse as well. I have a fix with a newer Disabler kext here:

Have you found a fix for your Razer mouse? SteerMouse or anything?

I really haven't found anything that works well. Basically, I just plug in my MS optical instead when booting OSX. It has drivers and works really, really well.

It's odd because Razer has OSX drivers for some models, but not all.

Go for it! The Dell Mini 9 works great.
Check out Andy Ihnatko's Mini 9 Hackintosh review and see for yourself.

I received the USB w/SATA enclosure and cloning didn't work. I did a brand new install and somethings improved, others got worse.

Plus side: Wireless works perfectly. Reboot and shutdown too.
Negative side: NVkush won't install.

Starting over again tonight.

Keep plugging away, I'm sure you will get it eventually. And document, document, document!

I am calling it quits for the night. I have decent experience and yet none of this makes sense. I have a working install on a small old USB drive. I have cloned that with CCC and SD!, twice. Never worked and I did repair permissions and reinstall Chameleon. I did a 3rd full install and a step by step reinstall. Still it will not boot. I can boot into safe mode and I believe that the panic is due to something about the graphics, but I can't be sure.

What kills me is that I have the exact same set of extensions in each install. In one attempt, I copied the entire extensions folder and repaired permissions, and the same panic! I don't get it. I then did the install and went extension by extension and both folders are the same. I used kext helper and repaired permissions, still one works the other doesn't. I am out of ideas. Anyone have any ideas for me?

So I used the Leopard Soup instructions, and almost everything is working perfectly. One issue is with my (very old) iPod, it's one of the brick-like old versions that uses a regular FireWire cable to connect. When I plug it into the hackintosh, it mounts on the desktop, and even has the right iPod icon - but it never even shows up in iTunes. A newer iPod (usb connection) worked perfectly. Any ideas?

I don't have an iPod, but I do have an MP3 player and it has a switch in the settings which allows it to be seen either as a flash drive or a sync capable device in iTunes or Media player. Does the iPod perhaps have a similar function? Is this a DS3L or UD3P? I just ask because one has built-in firewire and the other relies on a PCI card. Thought maybe this might be a factor. HTH
