Should I order a network card for use with the G31M board? It seems like everyone was using a network card for the other motherboards. USB audio too, right?

I think I'd like to see the USB stick method still written into future guides, it's really a great way to do it. Keeping the HDD hack-free would be absolutely *fantastic* for purists.

USB audio, I'd definitely recommend.

PCI Ethernet, the only thing it adds is instant Internet wake from system sleep (as opposed to waiting 20 seconds or so for the Ethernet to "wake up"). That and you don't need the R1000 kext, so fewer drivers needed.

Yeah, but the problem is most people don't want to have to buy/use extra equipment (USB audio, PCI Ethernet) to get there. And it's difficult to maintain separate guides, I mean this thread is like 7 months old

Once Chameleon 2.0 comes out, I might consider doing that. I think it's a better way, now that the drivers can be easily bundled on the USB stick...it really makes things easier from a maintenance standpoint.

There must be a way to write a simple Apple script that ejects the drive on boot, based on the UUID.

I'm assuming- there's no need for the system to access the hack kexts AFTER the OS has booted?

The UD3P supports 16gb (several working kits already available). It's hideously expensive though :Q

Edit: You'd be better off waiting for 10.5.7 + native Core i7 support, since a 12GB DDR3 kit is cheaper than a 16G DDR2 kit by like $200, plus you can upgrade to 24GB later on when kits become available.

I guess I'll go that way. The $200 you save in RAM ends up going to the mobo so cost wise it's a wash. However, performance wise, it's a big win, especially when 24GB comes down in price. BTW, I see a few Core i7 wish lists on NewEgg.

Did you happen to hit ctrl+option+apple+8 at the same time? That puts the monitor in 'negative' mode, which sounds like what you're describing. Try hitting this key combo and see if it switches back.

Thank you, Zaap and theStu. That did it.

Automator should do it, I used that to quit the WiFi app after it connected to the network on the Neutrino, very handy.

Yeah, you can get it working with a modded Kernel right now, but of course you have to be careful with updates. When 10.5.7 comes out, it should work natively. Like you said though, that stuff is pricey!

Have you ever considered working on the UD5 Kaido ?
I'd be happy to donate towards this cause ! when you say 10.5.7 will have native support, does that mean the Gigabyte X58-UD5 should work with a similar method to yours ?

I'm always following this thread at insanely but it's pretty cryptic.

I know it seems like the current setups are fast enough, I know my Q9550 is awesome. But the Core i7 setup would have only cost an extra $150 (with 3gb more ram) and it's roughly 30% faster.

Core i7 is supposed to be supported by the vanilla (stock) kernel in 10.5.7, so it should work a lot better with the next update (supposedly). I probably won't upgrade until 24GB DDR3 RAM kits are available since my UD3P is humming along pretty nicely

The Core i7 platform is more expensive up front, but of course you get the performance benefit right off the bat, so it will be interesting to see what happens this month as far as software support goes! That GTX 260 is looking pretty dang nice haha...

I wondered about that also, looks like a good deal if it will work with Leo.

I used this driver on my 3870 and it works fabulously, also supports the 3850:

iirc fan control doesn't work so well though, so I installed a silent cooler on mine.

Soo...

I really hate to be that guy. But hell, I am that guy.

I'm about to place an order for my hackintosh hardware (first timer). If somebody has a moment and feels like offering an opinion...

http://www.lambda-tek.com/comp...0ACPU%091597066%091%0A

I'm going for a fairly budget system. It comes in at just under £300 - right on target. I've searched the usual places and the components seem to be compatible for OSx86 purposes. I'm a little worried about the video card but I've seen one or two people say it works so I'll take a chance.

Thoughts?

So you're THAT guy, no matter, looks pretty good to me. I know the 7300 GT (256 Mb) cards work well and I know the 7200 GS (256 Mb) cards work well, but I can only guess that the 7300 GS should work okay. I can't imagine there being a whole lot of difference between the GS and GT, but I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

@ Kaido: Okay I have mine built and am presently installing Leo on the HD. Now where is that guide again?

Thanks mosslack, appreciate the opinion. I should receive the system early next week so I'll report back with anything of interest.

I'm in the same boat. First time build, same processor and mobo, but all of the other parts are different. My parts should be here next week, so I'll let you know how it goes. I'll probably be posting here to get help from the experts...

*epic facepalm*

I'm building this machine for iphone development. I've just found some discussions implying that Apple won't give you a certificate to distribute apps if you don't have official Apple hardware. Anybody know the real story?

That video card will work fine. When in doubt about a video card, if you have access to a Mac already, just open up Uinstaller, or EFIstudio or some other EFI strings tool and check that the card + memory amount is on the list. Rarely does the specific brand matter all that much, unless the card has been modified by a vendor. You can also check the HCL wiki in insanelymac.

The only other thing: the G31M will only use DDR-2 1066 RAM at full speed with an overclock- otherwise it runs at 800mhz. But not a big deal- and the RAM timings on that RAM is great.

I wouldn't doubt it- I'm just curious by what exact method does Apple determine if someone has official Apple hardware?

Ref G31 install, things were uneventful, used the DS3L (no audio) package from one of the recent kits and it's booting on it's own now and things seem fine. Haven't played with audio yet, but I'm sure I can find the correct driver for that as soon as I do. I didn't really build this for an HTPC, but rather just another Hack for me. I don't care about 1080p, I just love to build Hacks!
