My 9800GTX+ (eVGA, 512MB) works great. No problems with a 512MB 9800GT in the machine I just built either. (What exactly is the problem with some 512MB cards?)

Be cautious of XP and AHCI on the Rev. 1.1 version of the UD3P- chances are if you get it from newegg that's the version you'll get.

I simply could not get XP-64 to load with AHCI turned on, and yes, of course with the proper AHCI drivers. It installed fine with AHCI turned off. I hacked the drivers the same as I've done countless other times, even with the older UD3P. But on this rig, XP-64 failed every time, with a message 'Could not load Operating System'. Turn AHCI off, and it boots fine.

Then I tried the 'old fashioned method', IE: the way it's actually supposed to be done, and installed the AHCI drivers with a floppy disk at the F6 prompt while reinstalling XP-64. The drivers loaded, the OS installed, but same thing- on restart the system couldn't load XP-64 so long as AHCI was enabled.

I didn't try the 32 bit version of XP.

Vista, both 32 and 64bit Ultimate both worked fine with AHCI enabled at install. It may just be a fluke of just this board. It might be some combo of incompatibility with XP and the on board TPM security chip (I forget if the v1 board had that or not) or it may just be XP-64 bit. In any case, I'd be wary that this board may have evolved past the era of reliable XP backward-compatibility. Might be time to either choke on Vista, or just wait for Windoze 7.

Thanks mosslack and Zaap! I guess I'll have to bite on Vista and then move over to Windows 7 when it comes out.

I'll just follow the instructions in the kit that Kaido posted and we'll see what happens.

I really appreciate your folks help!

I was just going by what Kaido and the wiki said, I don't have one personally. Perhaps he can shed some light on the problem.

Alright for better or worse my WiFi PCI card is on the way. Been rough not being able to sync 1Password and Things.app between my desktop and touch.

I didn't want to say anything before, because I don't know for sure, but it seems like if it worked once it should still work. At least I hope that is the case for your sake.

The 512mb 9800GTX+ is an exception to the rule. A lot of older 512mb cards have issues. The rule is, do your research - if you find someone with a working 512mb card, then go for it, otherwise avoid it.

Anyone?

Haven't used it since last summer, set a friend up with it, sorry!

I wasn't doubting, I was literally asking, "WHAT" are the issues? What behavior is exhibited with a bad 512MB card?

As for me, I've personally used the 8800GT/512, 9800GT/512 (essentially the same card) and the 9800GTX+/512 (eVGA and one MSI) with no probs.

Keep in mind, I'm just sharing what happened for me. It may just be a fluke, a bad board or something- although everything else worked perfectly. I never had the same problem on the older UD3P boards. Also, I tried the XP install with both the shipped BIOS (F7) and the latest update (F8).

Lots of graphical bugs, non-working cards, etc. Huge, huge history of problems with 512mb cards. The newer 512mb cards seem to be working a LOT better though - my 3870 is good and the 9800GTX seems like a great choice!

Say I wanted a more powerful graphics card for Windows. Could I put a GTX260 in the 16x Slot-1 for Windows only and an ATI 2600 (or other cheap CI/QE supported card) in the 8x Slot-2 for OS X only?

Sure, upload your drivers and I'll take a look at them. Audio work? Networking? Onboard video?

Audio works, but only 2-channel (at the moment), networking works, and the onboard video works with NVkush.

The 10.5.5 installation dvd plus the usual scripts just worked on this thing so fast. It was amazing.

Some people are working on 5.1 sound, which is all I need really.

Yeah, I had hopes for the E7AUM, and others got it working well enough, but not me. I can't express how much easier the Asus was in this case.

amazing read.. just got through most of the 87 pages here. Thinking about hackintoshing in the next few weeks. The first post states a new thread would be up last weekend. I am looking for the absolute most compatible board so I won't have problems with the official apple updates. Is the new thread coming soon with updated hardware recommendations? (I am not trying to pester at all Kaido.. just wondering how you are coming. Thank you so much for all your work!!)

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P

Is the EP45-UD3P more compatible than the P35-DS3L? I thought that a Kaido-style retail install was equally easy on both?

They're equally easy, but the P35-DS3L series is no longer in production, so you have to go on eBay if you want one. Plus the UD3P has more ports than the DS3L and is only about $35 more than the eBay offerings.

@ DarkAmeba: I have Saturday off work, the new Wiki with the hardware recommendations will be up by Saturday evening

Just a heads up on the UD3P. Currently as I write this, the UD3P is $115 from newegg, after a $20 rebate.

I'm starting to piece together my next build. core i7, ud5 mother board... I know this thread is out of date, and a new one is coming, but I'm wondering 2 things:

are you going to talk about this board and core i7 in your next guide.

are you going to add graphics card to the list of working cards? I'm specifically looking at the 9000 series nvidea cards because I want dual DVI and those seem to be the only place I can find dual DVI out.

Nope, my threads are only on the boards I own. It takes me weeks or months to make a solid package, and I can't do that if I don't have a board in front of me.

I'm confused...add graphics card to the list of working cards? You mean in Uinstaller?

yeah, the PDF of all the cards included in Uinstaller... do you forsee other cards getting added to that for easy install?

The reason I ask (about the motherboard) is I've found a lot of people running corei7 with hackintosh and it's working, but I can't find a easy to use step by step situation like you offer in this thread. wishful thinking I guess.

Has anyone gotten the built-in audio on the P35-DS3L to work with the analog outputs on 10.5.6? I upgraded as ilife 09 won't work on 10.5.5 and now analog is broken. The optical outputs are working still. I also tried the program used to switch between the different outputs without success.

Uinstaller has a custom-option system for Nvidia cards that fall under the standard Nvidia driver, which includes the 9800GTX/GTX+. Other cards require different drivers, such as the GTX260 I believe, and aren't supported under Hackintosh. On the Wiki, I'm maintaining a separate list of cards that do/don't work, ones that have actually been tested - not everything on the Uinstaller list is actually supported, it's just that the generic architecture is compatible - some cards work, some cards don't. It's really on a per-model basis, which is why I say it's one of the biggest headaches and to find a working card/driver BEFORE buying it, otherwise it can cause a huge hassle!

Yeah, I see some Core i7 threads floating around on Insanely, but I'm not planning on doing one anytime soon. I'm just one guy on a budget, so unfortunately I can't buy a new board every month to play with I'm using a UD3P as my workstation right now, and a DS3L as my media center, so those are the boards I share guides on - mostly just my personal notes to help others along.
