Looks like yes:

A lot of responders obviously aren't that educated when it comes to modern Hackintoshes

I'm going for a fairly budget system. It comes in at just under £300 - right on target. I've searched the usual places and the components seem to be compatible for OSx86 purposes. I'm a little worried about the video card but I've seen one or two people say it works so I'll take a chance.

Thoughts?

Looks great! Like mosslack said, we've tested a 7300GT and a 7200GS, so it stands to reason that a 7300GS would be just peach (I'll cross my fingers for you!). The only thing I'd stay away from is a 512mb model (none of the 512mb 7300GT cards have worked thus far), but you're getting the 256mb model so you're safe. Definitely post back with how it turned out!

Kaido: Thanks for the advice and encouragement! I'm too curious not to go ahead with the project, so you'll be hearing about the results.

Regarding the link you posted, the poster didn't say whether or not he distributed his app. I have little doubt that I'll be able to develop and test on a hackintosh. I'm concerned that I'll go through the motions for a good couple of months, come up with something decent, and be unable to get it to the app store.

If nothing else, perhaps you have a friend with a Mac that could do it for you? Just a thought. HTH

Yeah good luck! I'm working on finalizing all of the packages tonight and I'm planning on posting them along with a new thread tomorrow

Go and post your question on the InsanelyMac forums, I'm sure there are a few iPhone developers there who would be able to answer your question for sure!

Zaap, is it really that easy, I DL'd EFI studio, do I just run the installer for any of the listed cards ?
I was thinking of buying an XFX 8800gt but i've read so many different things from works perfect, to mouse stutter, etc....

Do all the listed cards have QE/CI enabled as well ?

Jonnyc- checking the list in EFIStudio/UInstaller/OSx86Tools is just a good quick reference: it's likely every (unmodified by a vendor) card on the list works with full QE/CI via EFI strings. Also: double check the (original) OSx86 project Hardware Compatibility List under PCIe cards:
http://wiki.osx86project.org/w....php/HCL_10.5.2#nVIDIA

(Hint: substitute 10.5._ [3, 4, 5, 6] for newer but less complete variations of the list) The PNY 7300GS/256 is on the 10.5.4 list. Disregard most of the older methods people list to get the card working, like nVinject and Natit- I'd refer to the better EFI string method.

By no means is the older Wiki complete, but it's still a great resource. I personally prefer it to the newer one, which is woefully incomplete, and weirdly arranged by manufacturer, making it very counter-intuitive for just quickly scanning working hardware. Using both resources (wiki, and EFI list) you can get a pretty good idea what will work and what won't.

The mouse stutter problem as I recall was related to the AppleUpstreamuserclient.kext file in 10.5.6: once removed, it should fix it. As far as I know, it's not related specifically to the XFX 8800GT, which should work fine.

By the way, for anyone still working on the onboard sound for the GA-G31M-ES2L, use EFIStudio or OSx86Tools, and select AZUL from the device list, and add to the plist. I don't know if you need to re-add the other critical devices at the same time; when I set mine up, I only used EFIStudio to set up everything, not UInstaller.

I'll see about making a custom hex dump to add into Uinstaller, thanks!

Hi guys, wonderful work you have done here! I have a question, what is the advantage to this method versus a Kallaway or iDeneb?

I am new to Hackintosh and still learning.

Thanks

Legal questions notwithstanding, the satisfaction of getting a seemingly ordinary PC motherboard to run a completely vanilla install of OS X is a rush. Plus the added benefit of Apple updates without waiting for Kaly or any of the others to come out with a newer version of their distro. Besides that it is just plain fun for some of us!

Hi, I'm fairly new myself but I think I can answer your question.

Kallaway and iDeneb are premodified Leopard install discs. Firstly, if you're using one of them, it's a reasonable assumption that you don't own a legitimate copy of Leopard and that's piracy. Secondly, I don't think you can easily update installs that aren't performed from a legit Leopard disc.

The others can fill in the gaps better than I can, but the fact of the matter is that if you're going to be using OSX, Apple deserve to be paid for their software.

Yup, that's basically it. Our primary goal is to get Leopard working on our PCs, which Kalyway, iDeneb, and other "cooked" distributions allowed us to do easily before. Our secondary goal is to get as close to a "vanilla" (unmodified) install of Leopard as possible. Since BOOT-132 allows us to install a Retail Leopard, we use that now instead of those other pre-made hacked-up Leopard disc since it works WAY better (updates, stability, etc.).

You can dual-boot now on a single drive using any number of methods, it's just not super simple. Haven't tried dual-booting Chameleon 2.0 yet. Their documentation is pretty sparse so far, so you might want to join the Chameleon forums and ask around there for further details:

So I installed the XFX 9800 GT, I used UIinstaller for the 9800 GFX card.
What impact will this have on the actual card performance ?

QE says supported.
CI says Hardware accelerated.

So both those look good, just wonder about performance. But for anyone wondering it does work. I used Kaido's UD3P kit with a 7300 GT first and now simply ran UIinstaller again using the 9800 GFX.

I'm getting ready to do another round of testing with the new Chameleon as I have wrapped up work on the Neutrino which BTW works very well now (sound, video, battery, sleep, iCam, card reader, dual boot with Vista, etc.), thanks to using a guide for the Asus EEE PC which I found online. I have the new G31 system setup with dual booting in mind, but I have not installed Vista yet. Once I do, and have a good backup, I will play with Chameleon to see just how well it works with dual operating systems on the same drive. Prior tests have proved inconclusive due to a number of different factors. I will report back once I have a good answer, at least on this particular system. HTH

Not sure how much you want. If you expect it to fix you breakfast in the morning I wouldn't hold my breath! Are your resolutions there? Does it do what you want it to do (outputs supported, etc.)? In the Hack business these are pretty good indications it is working properly and is supported. BTW, when you find one that will fix your breakfast, send it over to my place 'cause I want steak and eggs!

Thank You Very Much for answering my question gentlemen. This quote from Kaido describes me exactly "I love computers, projects, and tinkering in general and this looked like a fun challenge." I am using iDeneb successfully but am intrigued by this method. If I am not mistaking the GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P is the board you currently recommend for this project along with purchasing a Retail copy of OSX? I am also a fan of silent computing so my current video card is a EVGA 7200GS 512MB PCI-Express because it has no fan, therefore makes no noise.

I believe there have been some problems with the 512 Mb cards using the EFI strings. I know the 256 Mb cards like this work fine though as I have a few of them. HTH

I dunno, some of my vid cards get hot enough you can replace your George Foreman grill with them

If you want a small board, get the Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L.

If size doesn't matter, get the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P (more USB ports, onboard Firewire, onboard digital audio outputs, more PCIe ports, more SATA ports).

Get the 256mb 7200GS. The older cards have problems with 512mb VRAM for some reason.

Apple releases a new developer version of 10.5.7 last night (9J61). Ho-hum.
