I followed your guidlines exactly. from here.
http://leopardsoup.pbworks.com/ud3p_v11

my setup.

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P (F8 BIOS)
INTEL Q8300 Core2Quad (standard heat sinc)
4 GIG RAM
Sapphire RADEON 3870 DDR4 512MB (blue one)

Anyway, I used you guidline and got everything up to 10.5.7 running, using a NVIDIA to boot with and install. Then I used your UInstaller and installed what you said EXCEPT the video driver. I read on OSXPROJECT.ORG to use the NATIT.

It looks like I screwed up and I should have put the natit.kext driver in with your Uinstaller, instead what I used was a .pkg I found on insanelymac.com

Now when I try to install CI/QE apps it says that I have 0MB of RAM so I can't run any CI/QE apps. So I screwed it all up trying to write over my .pkg Natit attepts?

Anyway, I am on my 3rd try! First one I installed the 1.0 package and got the kernal panick, last install I screwed up my Radeon Drivers.

How should I install the 3870 drivers? Should I use your 3870.hex/kext from your Uinstaller?? Or should I use the natit.kext? And now that there are tons of natit.kext.. Which one should I use?

Waiting here with a clean 10.5.7 hoping you reply back before I screw it up again..

Thanks again for all your hard awesome work!!

Yup, remove your previous video card drivers (if you don't know what was installed, then do a re-install of the OS to wipe it all out) and use the hex from Uinstaller, that's the one I use on my Sapphire 3870

Do i have to know do the full reinstall to get to .7 ?
I think I tried installing .7 5 or 6 times before from complete reinstall to combo upgrade and each time my computer was left bricked. Granted this was on the old kit with the sound issues.

What's the process no to upgrade from .6 to .7 on the ud3p, should I just run UInstaller and tick off the mkexts and then install the combo or should I delete some files first from the old install ?

A little guidance would be a huge help. Im forever fearful of this .7 thing.

Well, the new kit has all of the "final" stable drivers and whatnot, so if you can swing it, I'd recommend a fresh install. I go through a lot of tweaks in this thread (Anandtech is for development since we have more technical users here, and Insanely is the ready-for-everyone guides), so the updates are kind of scattered all over the place.

The new kits are my final for 10.5.7, I will be releasing new Guides in the Genius Bar on Insanely shortly!

http://netkas.org/?p=104

Preliminary testing indicates no change from using the strings on my system. I did the reinstall on my test partition, updated to 10.5.7, reboot, ran Uinstaller but did not check the Apply EFI String for video card. I did select everything else applicable however. Rebooted once more and the system came back up with a resolution of 1440x900. I thought this a bit odd being as I had not selected a video card. Installed the Enabler for Nvidia cards and rebooted once more. Once again it came back up with a resolution of 1440x900@75Hz. I used the displays pref panel to reset to the correct resolution for my monitor 1680x1050, but did not adjust the refresh rate. The display went to a blue screen, subsequent attempts at rebooting that partition brings up the You need to restart message, so nothing new here. I have no doubt that if I would have changed the refresh rate to 60Hz, the package would have worked fine. HTH

BTW, for this install I used my newly created 16 Gb Sandisk Cruzer micro flash drive with the Leopard install DVD on it. Worked fine. I hope to transfer the Boot 132 ISO to this drive also making it a completely self contained installer. It even has a 5+ Gb data partition for holding install related packages, etc. If I can get this to use the Boot 132 image and be bootable, I will give details on how I did it.

All you need is the BOOT-132 USB package (in one of my way way old packages). It's the same deal - syslinux - but for USB instead (note that USB does not read actual CD/DVD discs, so the ISO trick is fine here).

WORKED!!! YAHOO!!

Ok, Ok, take a breath.. So I have the 3870 running, I can resize, I have Final Cut Studio and Shake up and running, I'm very very stoked. Now I have to install a XP64bit on another drive because I have to do some work in 3D Studio Max.

Am I getting greedy? My new setup is a OSx86 first then a PC, but I will need a PC here at some point. Will my Chameleon boot loader let me install XP without any probs? Any tutorials out there?

Also, I see that there is a fancy GUI based Chameleon boot loader, Chameleon 2 rc1. If you have a tutorial for how to upgrade from the PC_EFI v9 Chamelion to that, I would love to know.

Most importantly, I have a working system right now and I don't want to screw it up, but I would like to be able to dual boot into a PC at some point.

Thanks Kaido, your like the OSx86 saint.

Success (mostly)

Many thanks to K and everyone else on the board for the helpful messages above. I built my first PC ever and installed 10.5.7 following K's guide for the ES2L. It is working well as our new htpc with plex.

Three questions:

1. In the bios settings, if I disable the on-chip PCI IDE's, the system will not boot. The boot process gets to Booting from CD/DVD and fails. I have the PCI IDE's enabled, and all seems to be well, booting into 10.5.7 on the HD. I see messages above indicating that the leopard does not like the IDE. Is there any concern with leaving these enabled? THe system has been stable for days.

2. Has anyone managed to get netflix streaming to work with the es2l? I can install silverlight (with a slight mod to the install package) and get to the netflix streaming web page. However, the streams will not play - they give '8152' errors - something related to DRM. I have found messages solving this problem, and they relate to a UUID fix and/or a network EFI string. I have not been able to get these to work.

If it helps, I am have the es2l with a SATA HD, SATA DVD, geforce 9400 (using a custom EFI in the Uinstaller) and the rest according to K's recipe.

3. Any recommended remotes? I see some negative reviews of the Mira (drivers and stability). Stability and compatibility with a universal remote would be good.

haha, glad it went well for you. Wait till you fire up Motion with that 3870, whoo!

My recommendation for dual-booting: buy another drive. 80gb 7200rpm SATA is like $33 on Newegg; you can install drivers on the Mac and/or Windows side to read the other drive's contents if need be. The reason is there is no clean way of doing a dual-booting system on a single drive...it's messy, you can screw up both installs really easy, it's just a big headache. If you're adventurous, then by all means try one of the many available ways, but know beforehand that it's not a cut-and-dry process like using Uinstaller.

Also avoid Chameleon 2.0 right now, at least until it's out of beta. Has various small bugs that make it a bit of a headache, haha.

Hey Kaido, thanks! yeah, I'll stay away from Chameleon 2. As for installing a PC on another drive. When I go to the bootloader, do I just install the same way I installed OS X? Put in the XP64 disk, say [fe] at the command promptd, then it will boot from the DVD drive, then I will install onto that other drive. Then when I restart the bootloader will have an option to boot from one of the drives?

Also, I always worry about installing over the wrong drive so when I have installed vista64 on a MacPro I took out all the other drives except for the drive I was installing on, so if I do this on this station when I put the drive back in will my bootloader still be setup properly?

I don't want to burden you with my beginerness, I'll go read around some more as well... But if you know a good link that does a walkthrough to dual boot using the same PC_EFI v9 bootloader , that would be great.

Thanks Again...

1. You can leave IDE on. Just don't have anything connected to it, or have any IDE drivers installed. iirc, the ES2L's IDE is for IDE mode for SATA. I'll have to check my BIOS settings when I get home to confirm.

2. I *THINK* the Netflix DRM problem may be related to disabling the HDCP upstream client in the new disabler (which fixes jitter on 8000-series cards in .6/.7). I'll whip you up a new Mkext/Disabler to try and see if that fixes the problem (you should be fine since you have a 9400 card).

3. I am currently just using the Mantra IR receiver, the Mira software, and the Apple Remote. I really like it. There is a bit of lag in response time, not like seconds, but somewhat longer than a direct keystroke from a keyboard - I notice it, my wife doesn't, but then I'm a perfectionist so...haha. iirc Mira used to be buggy, but it's fine now. I am planning on hooking up my Harmony 880 to the Mantra (it's supported), just haven't gotten around to it. I also have a leftover IR sensor from my old Vista Media Center, so I'll give that a try as well in the future.

For anyone that needs Hackintosh-compatible 802.11 N wireless in a half-height PCI card for smaller h/h mATX cases, I found a great solution during a client build this weekend.

Get this Edimax card..

Install the Ralink OSX drivers(RT2860) from here.

To use it in a half-height case, simply unscrew the full-height bracket. Install the card in a PCI slot, and use a pair of cable ties looped through the screw-holes to tie the card tightly to the PCI bracket divider. Install another card or bracket cover in the slot next to it to further hold the ties in place. This ended up making the card just as secure as if it were screwed in with a half-height bracket. (There is no known h/h bracket that will work with this card.)

Example 1

Example 2

This card and my DIR-655 router= fast, stable draft N OSX/Windows/Linux wifi in a very small package.

Well I am about to order my UD3P, just searching for a hard drive right now. Once I get it installed and setup I am going to be selling my DS3L board. If anyone is interested PM me, I have heatware and the board is in great condition.

Snow Leopard isn't sounding so hot on Gigabyte boards (and other boards). Apparently it resets the CMOS when you reboot, somehow.

Weird, after the point upgrade to .7 via the combo update from .6 my audio is gone. I have a DS3L and onboard worked fine under 10.5.6 - I reinstalled the kext packages via the UInstaller and also reapplied the patch via the AppleHDAPatcher. Two Audio Devices show up in the System profiler:
Intel High Definition Audio:

Device ID: 0x1458A002
Audio ID: 888

Intel High Definition Audio:

Device ID: 0x1002AA30
Audio ID: 888

Hmm....
also, bad news that about SL, I was so looking forward to it. Maybe there will be a way to fix it.

Yah...we have until September, so hopefully something will crop up. Basically it just wipes your BIOS settings every time you shutdown or reboot. Other than that, works fine. For 64-bit mode, you need 64-bit kexts, so you'll need to setup DSDT for the new HPET patch and all that jazz. Not hard.

I tried to deinstall all the .kext connected to HDA and reinstall them from the newest soupkit, but still no sound on my D3SL.
I figured this routine should work:
1. Start from a working 10.5.6 install
2. Install the 10.5.7 Combo Update, reboot
3. Reinstall the soupkit with the UInstaller, reboot
4. Re-patch with the HDAPatcher, reboot...

...but it ain't working for me.

Hope this is helpful

Thanks for posting this solution. I just ordered a low profile case only to realize that a Netgear GA311 will not fit. Do you know if there are any compatible NIC cards that are both low profile and compatible with this board? I would prefer not to have an "adapted" solution.

Thanks again,

Hernando

Unfortunately low-profile + Hackintosh compatible usually equals- no easy solution. I personally don't know of any low-profile NIC cards that will work. Newegg sells a low-profile Mac-compatible NIC that includes the LP bracket, but it's PCIe 1x, and a bit pricey at $25.

However, you're probably in luck. If I were you, I'd get this LP adapter and just adapt your GA311.

The problem with the Edimax card is there's no known LP adapter for it- but the GA311 fortunately has one.

Edit: Opps, just noticed they're out of stock. A quick google search turns up no one with any left in stock except for some place called Wicked PC which must have the last 10 left in the world since they are gouging $30 (!!!) for them.

And this is the sort of crazy thing that leads to some of us just breaking out the twist ties.

Thank you for the help.... At $30 you have to be really desperate. That is more that the NIC or even with a cheapo case..... Zip ties, here I come.

Thanks a million.!
