EDIT 2: Found a place that has a X-Fi card fix. VoodooHDA link from here.

Now back to finding a drive solution. Even if I get another 300 VRaptor, I still have no place to put it in my machine without probably doing some customizing - thank god I got a dremmel kit. EDITING for an actual 4th time. Say I do get a new drive. How do I format it for a Mac OS

Partitioning and formatting can be done from the Leopard install DVD. As soon as it boots to the install routine simply choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. This is all covered in Kaido's guide, you did download it didn't you?

Do you mean at the beginning of the thread!? I seen some of the d/l kits. My board is a UD3R v1.1 F9 bios. I know they are very similar boards but couldn't something go wrong with it and the UD3P kit?

Also. I have a 300 VRaptor on the way. I'll be figuring out where to mount it in the meantime. In section - X. Preparation, I read That I need a constant USB drive installed on the machine and the Install has to go from an ISO file not straight from the external USB DVD drive I have: that I am familiar with in a Windows installation procedure. Are those two methods the only way or are there others? I don't understand.

so it doesn't get lost i just wanted to quote this... did some editing, thanks sorry

The first line of this thread is the most important one:

This is an OLD OLD OLD thread!

So many things have changed since then that none of the original thread really applies any more and as such you can ignore it and just use the info which applies to your board. In your case I would suggest the UD3P kit as it is very close to your UD3R, but still no guarantee it will work. If you click on the UD3P link it will better explain how to do this. HTH

Already have installer & guides ready for Snow, just waiting on the devs & official release

So you have the sound card working in OS X now? That's pretty cool, never thought the X-Fi would ever work with OS X. Did you just install the Voodoo HDA kext? Any idea of digital out works?

No. All I have done is bought OS X 10.5.6 & Final Cut Express. I have an extra 1GB Attache flash drive ready & a new HD coming in cause my Adaptec card will not likely be supported for MAC. All I've done is get my Flash drive ready and figured out a spot to put my new 300 V raptor in. I'm actually going to screw in the HD cage right now.

...I found that while researching...

Nobody knows what's in 10.5.8 so far, but I can tell you 2 things:

1. Both of the cards mentioned in the article already require special drivers (not the standard Nvidia EFI string we're using now), so updating them for 10.5.8 won't be anything new

2. Snow Leopard works just peachy with existing drivers (Leopard's EFI string method = OK)

Here's the 10.5.7 Combo Update, 729 megs:

http://support.apple.com/downl..._X_10_5_7_Combo_Update

Saves a LOT of time vs. downloading it from Apple Software Update!

Hackintosh doesn't support fan speed controls; just let the motherboard manage it. You can either setup a smartfan for auto-regulation in the BIOS, or you can install some manual rotary knobs for controlling the fan speeds yourself.

Finalizing the ES2L & DS3L guides this week as well, as soon as those are up, the new 10.5.7 Anandtech thread goes up and we can deep-six this beast of a thread here

Hackintosh virgin here...

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for their suggestions and advice (and especially Kaido for his great guides and tools!). Based on everything I have read from this thread I am now jumping into the waters of HTPC, hackintosh style! I have the following on order and hopefully, once all the parts get here, I will be able to follow the latest and greatest of Kaido's offerings! I'll let you know how everything goes!

Here's my list (with where bought and price; some prices include rebates/discounts). I'm a little bit worried about the video card (ASUS EN8400GS SILENT/HTP/512M), but the GeForce 8400 512 MB does appear on the list that Kaido linked to for the DS3L mtb (http://www.scribd.com/doc/7618558/Video-Cards).

GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L (from mwave; $111 for mtb and cpu combo)
PENTIUM E5200 (from mwave; see above)
ASUS EN8400GS SILENT/HTP/512M GeForce 8400 (from zipzoomfly; $28.99)
SAMSUNG Spinpoint 1TB SATA Hard Drive (zipzoomfly; $73.99)
CORSAIR 4GB PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) Dual Channel (zipzoomfly; $29.99)
Antec New Solution NSK2480 HTPC case with 380W PSU (newegg; $117.45)
LINKSYS USB 2.0 Wireless Adapter with Dual-Band (newegg; $34.99)
Sony Optiarc 24X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW SATA Drive (ewiz; $30.99)

I am thinking of overclocking the E5200 to 300 mhz, but other than that, everything will be as be (I think/hope!).

Thanks again to everyone!

Was the issue with the bios being reset fixed? On the ds3l?

New thread? HA!

I don't believe it. I think you'll just wait until the one year anniversary of this one.

But seriously...is the 10.5.8/whatever thingee for the DS3L up already?

So my Adaptec SCSI replacement HDD setup came in today and it is defective. Didn't even plug it in. I took it out of the static bag to check it out before preping and you could actually hear loose parts inside the drive crashing around. Either bad packaging by NE or... don't know....

I ordered one of these and my hack doesn't recognize it at all. It works fine in Windows though. Anyone else having a problem with these?

Ooooh! I need/want bluetooth since my hack doesn't really recognize the stick that comes with logitech stuff (although it still works).

The cheapest "supported" dongle I've seen is like $25 from newegg, and it's not worth that much to me. So any word on what's a good BT dongle that works under hack?

That sucks, but I've BTDT before also with items ordered from most all suppliers. Having worked for the USPS for 16 years now I can tell you that packages are NOT treated gently at most stages of the shipping process. I mostly have had good experiences with NewEgg though.

Just wanted to chime in that three months later I am still so happy with my decision to sell off my iMac and build my Hackintosh. Thanks again to Kaido! Without him I'd never had done it.

Now, I wanted to know if there's a natively working 802.11b/g/n WiFi adapter. Don't want to use Ralink's utility, though it does work.

On eBay, there's a PCI card that has a Mini-PCI card (or PCIe?) inside. You can use either a Dell 1505 or Apple Airport card in it. It's plug-and-play for 802.11n.

Glad to hear your system is working out for you
