Don't forget, the MacPro has PCI slots. A handful of semiconductor firms support both Mac and PC (Realtek, Railink, Broadcom, Blackmagic etc.) so of course, the same drivers generally work on a Hackintosh just as they would a Mac with the same slots. The drivers were never developed for OSx86 in particular, but certainly none of the manufacturers minds that the OSx86 world has the potential for netting them a lot more cross-platform sales. After all, that's the purpose behind supporting other platforms in the first place.

1) Yes Gymnae and Renderingrocks are both correct, but the links are now dead. So Gymnae, perhaps you should hold on to that driver for now.

2) Mosslack, how did the 10.5.8 go. Reading from few back pages, seems it's breaking the system? I have EP-DS3L and has been the least problematic board all this time. So anyone updated without any problem (on EP- or P-DS3L) with few problems that can be take care of easily, like reinstalling the sound drivers? Or should I wait for Kaido's final guide and not update yet.

3) And yes I am also waiting to see those 3 monitors on your hack Mosslack. I guess you are not talking about 2 screens only which is easily possible, just using 1 x PCIe card with both VGA and DVI slot? and I played with it for many months w/out a problem.

4) I have been thinking about a new board for many months now.. Yesterday went to the local PC HW market and "man o man" some boards from gigabyte and asus are sizzling hot.. off course they are like few hundred US$, but they got like 3 x PCIe's, so I am wondring if someone is using these latest babes for their hackintosh pleasure? Their names were like extreme/ultimate this or extreme/ultimate that.. WOw.. And darn it, here I am stuck between getting a new CPU or MB.

The 10.5.8 problem on my UD3P turned out to be Chameleon 2. Once I went back to the version used in the Uinstaller everything was fine. I since reinstalled Chameleon 2 RC2 and it is working fine. Just can't use it to boot with after an update, but then can be reinstalled with no problems. The update went smoothly on the DS3L, just had to reinstall the sound patch.

The 3 monitors are 2-24" widescreen Asus models and the 3rd monitor is my Acer 22" widescreen. I'm just waiting for the new mounts to arrive, I ordered the wrong ones the first time. My UD3P has 2 PCI-e slots so it will be easy to make work with 3 monitors, but the DS3L only has one PCI-e slot. I'm using a USB-DVI/VGA adapter for the 3rd monitor on that system, at least until I can afford another dual PCI-e board.

I think my next board with be Asus, there are several I am considering. The Gigabyte boards are fine, but I've hacked enough of them for awhile. Time to try something new!

Eh, the link I posted a few pages back still works for me... just look on the bottom of the page in the category "others"

I had no problems updating my system. To be safe I followed instruction by netkas.org:

install Disabler.kext

install this dsmos.kext ( a bit updated to be present in mkext)

reboot

create backup of Extensions folder. just in case:

sudo cp -rf /System/Library/Extensions /System/Library/Extensions_old

update !

good luck

Hope that helps...

Gymnae and Mosslack, thanks will go ahead with the 10.5.8 update then.

And Mosslack, do let us know which MB you finally go for.

Cheers.

p.s. sorry, don't know why my comment is inside the quote, but well...

Is it just me, or is the new Chameleon 2.0 RC2 now able to boot Windows 7? I did a reinstall to see if I could figure out why it says my copy of the Win 7 beta is not genuine, and afterwards I noticed it would boot fine from Chameleon. I guess the Win 7 beta just expires after awhile as it keeps telling me that is the problem. Their website says the beta is good until 2010, but then MS never was any good at telling the truth.

The Beta expired in August. The Release Candidate is good until 2010.

Been away on vacation for a while. I read a few pages back and I just wanna make sure before I do something stupid.

I'm NOT using internal sound and internal ethernet on my Kaido guide UD3P hackintosh. Can I just update to 10.5.8 via software update (or dmg) without any issues?

If there are problems waiting for me, I thiink I'm better of waiting for Snow Leopard and tinker with it then...

Thanks..

snow leopard guide, snow leopard guide! I have found some but really wanna wait for a kaido guide

btw guides can be found at infinitemac dot com. Nothing as clear and concise as a kaido guide though.

I officially have no idea what's going on. Chameleon?

I think it's time for the new thread and for Kaido to come save us all. It's been almost 10 months, right? I mean, my current install still as some DSDT file, which is no longer needed, supposedly, with Kaido's recommended 10.5.7 install -- but apparently is making a return engagement for 10.5.8?

I should know how to do this...I'm getting my Ph.D in computer science, but I don't have the foggiest clue. If we're not going to get a new thread, can someone at least post a small primer on the state of where "we" are (or pointers to something similar)? I'd like to be able to do a little of my own work to help out the community, but there's just too much stuff floating around here/this thread for me to get a decent foothold.

Thanks!

If you are still using Chameleon from the Uinstaller you should be fine. If you do use the new 2.0 version, it may hang. There is a bug/feature in the new version which messes with the video and causes problems. This was my problem. Using the Chameleon from the Uinstaller cured the problem and once I updated to 10.5.8 I could once again reinstall the new Chameleon 2.0. It does mess up the internal sound, but you said you aren't using that right? Just FYI, I downloaded and used the delta update on mine. HTH

Links to the latest guide/kit for each board that Kaido has guides for is posted on the first page of this thread. Any of those can be used for 10.5.7. Updating to 10.5.8 for the DS3L is painless, just have to apply the sound patch after the update if you use internal sound. I have not done the ES2L as mine is no longer being used as a Hack. The UD3P is fine as long as you aren't using the new Chameleon v2.0, which you shouldn't be if you follow Kaido's guide. The internal sound on that board gets messed up by the update, but can be fixed temporarily by using the VoodooHDA.kext, or you can wait for a proper fix once it is found. When Kaido comes out of the bat cave again, I'm sure he will post an update. That is the best info I have at the moment, maybe someone else has better? HTH

I am using the original Chameleon from the Uinstaller and I am not using internal sound. I guess I'll clone my current setup to another drive just to be safe and then go ahead and apply the delta update.

Is there anything I need to do after the upgrade is complete? Like run Uinstaller and redo anything?

Thanks mosslack.

I don't believe the update affects anything other than the sound so you should be good to go, but always a good idea to have a backup just in case. I find it's always a good idea to use the uinstaller to redo Chameleon after an update. This may or may not be necessary, but it doesn't hurt anything and it gives me peace of mind.

For those following my multiple monitors adventures, I received the USB-DVI/VGA adapter today and have it hooked up. So far I have managed to get a second display, but can't get the mouse cursor over to it for some reason. This have something to do with the fact that I'm using a the same display on a switch as the second display. It may be necessary to have 2 actual physical displays hooked up at the same time to get the mouse cursor working. Still waiting on those new mounts to arrive, everything else is ready to go!

Edit: I hooked up my Asus VW161D to the USB adapter and now I have a moving mouse cursor on the second display. I managed to change the background on that display and have also previewed a DVD playing on it. I can tell you that although it is watchable, it most certainly is not smooth. Jerkiness can be easily seen, but as I said, it would do to watch in a pinch. Moving app screens such as Mail over to the second display was simply a matter of dragging it over, but I noticed when I replied to an email the reply window was back on my main display. So I dragged it over also and now subsequent replies are on the second display as they should be. I think I'm gonna like having 3 monitors!

Played around some more with the HIS multi-view adapter. Went over to the dark side and set it up in Windows Vista. Of course Windows located the drivers for it without having to insert the CD, but the adapter seems to work better in OS X. The video is terrible playing a DVD, sometimes it will work and sometimes it just freezes. Also more difficult in Windows to individualize the desktop background, never did figure that one out. Good thing I don't use Windows that much or else this adapter simply would not do. Also got some bad news from UPS. Seems my new mounts won't be here until next Monday as apparently they were just shipped yesterday. Count this as a strike against Cyberguys for not shipping an in stock item promptly. Order was placed 8-14 and not shipped until 8-17. No excuse for this in my book.

I agree, it's not a peak time of the year, get the orders out! Especially when most have lower sales due to the economy.

I am trying to install iDeneb 10.5.6 on the following:

Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
E7400
G.Skill 4GB
9800GT
WD 500GB blue SATA
Samsung SATA DVD drive

Initially, I could not get past the point where it said

BSD root:

but after doing a quick format of the drive at the beginning of an XP install, it gets past this point. There is nothing else on the drive but it is probably formatted with NTFS?

Now I get to the following point:

localhost kexts[47]: can't add repository (not a directory).
Resetting IOCatalogue
localhost kexts[47]: root filesystem is read-only; skipping kernel link data generation
localhost DirectoryService[53]: Launched version 5.4 (v514.21)

it is just sitting there with no activity on the HDD or CD. I am using the -v -F and tried -x and cpus=1 but it still hangs. AHCI is enabled and followed the rest of the bios settings as Kaido listed. I checked the MD5 of the iso and it seems fine. Any thoughts? Thanks!

mac os X cannot write to ntfs without a plug in. It is read only. Your better off using a second HD for windows. Reformat the drive for mac and add the GUID in disc utility. Intel macs require GUID, even apple ones!

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for trying to get digital audio out...

My GA-G31M-ES2L hack is working great thanks to Kaido's guide, but I am trying to get digital audio out working. I have the audio adapter plate (from ebay) installed, but how do I set the audio to Digital Out? Is it thru the sound preference settings in OSX? If so, I don't see anything..."Choose device for output" and OSX gives me 3 options: Line out, headphones, and digital out. Line out works fine, but when I select Digital Out, I get the message "The selected device has no output controls". This leads me to thinking that I need to change the GA-G31M-ES2L board settings, but how do I do that in OSX? The GA-G31M-ES2L manual tells you how to change the settings, but that's thru using their PC software.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Evan

From one of Kaido's previous posts:

Good news #1: Optical audio DOES work on the ES2L!!!

You need that optical audio adapter plate ($16 shipped on eBay). It has both Coaxial and SPDIF, both of which work (I tested). All you have to do is plug it into the SPDIF pins right on the motherboard and set the audio output to Digital Out. This is GREAT because the ES2L doesn't have onboard digital audio jacks, so for less than $20 with shipping you can get it!
