Thanks for the help, I just thought that it would format the drive on its own once it recognized the drive. So I used a Ubuntu Live CD, formatted FAT32 (since this is compatible), and then got into the installer. Things are slowly coming together, installing one driver at a time. Thanks again!

My GA-G31M-ES2L hack is working great thanks to Kaido's guide, but I am trying to get digital audio out working. I have the audio adapter plate (from ebay) installed, but how do I set the audio to Digital Out? Is it thru the sound preference settings in OSX? If so, I don't see anything..."Choose device for output" and OSX gives me 3 options: Line out, headphones, and digital out. Line out works fine, but when I select Digital Out, I get the message "The selected device has no output controls". This leads me to thinking that I need to change the GA-G31M-ES2L board settings, but how do I do that in OSX? The GA-G31M-ES2L manual tells you how to change the settings, but that's thru using their PC software.

Thanks for any suggestions!

From one of Kaido's previous posts:

Good news #1: Optical audio DOES work on the ES2L!!!

You need that optical audio adapter plate ($16 shipped on eBay). It has both Coaxial and SPDIF, both of which work (I tested). All you have to do is plug it into the SPDIF pins right on the motherboard and set the audio output to Digital Out. This is GREAT because the ES2L doesn't have onboard digital audio jacks, so for less than $20 with shipping you can get it!

I've asked Kaido a bunch of times, but he's never checked...can you see if digital audio IN works? I have an effects pedal with spdif out, and I'd love to jack it into my Hack for Garage band. I know the D3SL has spidf/digital audio in headers, and the pinouts are the same for that ebay bracket. IT's just a matter of jacking in something with a digital output into your Hack. It doesn't need to support bitstreamed DD or anything (at least for me). I just want to make sure it's a viable option before I order the ebay header.

Anyone want to step up to the plate and test this?!

Yah, I'm interested in knowing too - I currently don't have anything with optical input OR output

How can I test it if I don't even know how to get the OUT to work? I'm going to try to install VMware and maybe I can access the Windows control panel there to set the digital out...

After staying up all night I finally got digital out to work! Here is how I did it...I did NOTHING! It was working all along. By selecting the digital out option, the sound gets passed to the machine that the digital signal is going to (i.e. my receiver). I later found this while searching thru the PLEX wiki "when using the digital connection, the internal amplification of the sound board is disabled, forgoing volume control within OSX."

You guys could have just told me I was an idiot!

On a side topic...PLEX is pretty cool!

PLEX has the ability to set the sound output so when I'm not using PLEX and doing other stuff on my HTPC Hack, my sound is just the regular line out going to my TV. When I do stuff thru PLEX, it automatically switches over to digital out and sends the audio to my receiver/surround sound system.

Also, after looking at the bracket that I purchased from eBay, it does NOT have a digital audio IN; it only has digital out (one for SPIDF and one for coax)

Now if I could just get this thing to make coffee! Kaido???

First off, congrats on getting it to work!

As for whether or not digital in is supported, it -- I'm guessing -- has nothing to do with the bracket. I'm not sure if your ESL (whatever it's called, I can never remember the model numbers of these boards) has a digital input header on the mobo (i.e. three pins for digital input), but I know the DS3l and U3DP do. My whole point/hypothesis is that the pinout of the bracket will work with that header on the mobo. The bracket just takes a certain plug (coaxial/digital) and sends it across a wire to a bunch of pins (positive, ground, whatever).

So, if your motherboard has a digital in header, the bracket should work just fine with it. It's more of an issue of getting a Hack with OSX to recognize it (i.e. I would like someone to test the software and make sure digital in is supported) than anything hardware related. Especially the bracket...assuming the pin definitions are the same (which I checked on the DS3L, and they are...can't imagine your mobo would be different if it actually has a digital in header) it'll work.

Make sense? Now we just need someone to try it out and see if it works.

Quick update on 10.5.8: (w/ latest Security Update)

1. Installing the old AppleHDA.kext made my rig KP
2. Onboard Ethernet didn't want to work (with R1000, at least)
3. Sleep works with a new kext
4. Fixed USB drive disconnect during sleep with a new kext

Still testing...looks good so far

Hi Kaido,

I have had some really good luck booting with Chameleon RC1 on a USB drive. I have managed to get my 10.5.7 system running with EVERYTHING on the /E/E.

Audio and Internet also work fine without any kexts in /S/L/E.

I have also gotten 10.5.8 to run well too. My only problem has been when waking up from sleep, I get a warning message about my USB not being removed properly. What kext are you using to avoid this?

I have also read that Realtek now has an official driver for networking. This does get installed to /s/l/e, but at least it is a "legit" release from the chipset manufacturer.

I am now experimenting with the dsdt.aml stuff, but I have not gotten very far.

It is a crazy world....!

Thank you!

Any one have hints on what to get/where to get cheap firewire for this kit to connect to digital video cam for ripping to adobe premiere pro /final cut?

Also, is there a trick to getting this to boot with 2 sata drives? Currently mine boots great with 1, with 2, i have to use boot123 disk and manually pick the drive.

Firewire is quite simple. Go to newegg.com look at the firewire adapters available decide if you need FW400 or FW800. Whatever card you choose, make sure it says it is Mac OS 10.5 compatible. I believe most are. Cheapest FW400 I found $6:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16815124032

I use Chameleon RC1 and I have no issues booting to a bunch of drives. ARe you trying to boot XP? It's very difficult to boot to XP if XP is NOT the fist boot device. Let me know if you problem is XP.

I have the ep45-ud3p kit straight from the wiki instructions. I thought it had working firewire? I'm just looking to not spend 30$ on a best buy cable. I'm not booting xp, its a straigh hackintosh. I followed the kit directions, got it working with a boot drive etc, tested it and it was aok. Then I plugged in my spare data drive, and now, it doesn't boot. Course the spare drive was formatted NTFS I think, maybe that's the issue?

On some of the past pages I and others talked about SleepEnabler.kext and some awesome genuine Realtek drivers. You really should check those out.

I have the UD3P and it comes with FW400 in the back and for the front ports (if available) of your case. All you need is the cable to the camera. This cable should have come with your camcorder. I cannot imagine that it would cost more than $3 somewhere.

After plugging the second hard drive, did you go into the Bios > Advanced Screen > then first item "Set HD Boot Order" and then on the screen that opens, make sure the Mac drive is first on the list (the one with the bootloader). This is probably your problem.

The NTS drive you will not be able to write to from the Mac side unless you install Paragon NTFS... but it costs money.

Paragon was giving it away free a short time ago, but I'm not sure if that promo is still available.

I'm not concerned with writing to it so much. Mostly reading and moving the data to file server; Which Ive been doing slowly.

Camcorder didn't come with firewire cable; last time i had to buy one, and it is not lost either in my attic, or with a friend I lent it to

Considering doing a fresh install this weekend to (hopefully) 10.5.8.

Thinking about streamlining a bit more this time around; I have an iMic (USB Sound Card) so would it be beneficial to not install the AppleHDA drivers? Also using a GTX 260 with nVidia's drivers and netkas' enabler. I gather efi strings would be a more 'vanilla' way to run the card. Is that so?

And if I do install 10.5.6 Vanilla and run the combo update to 10.5.8 I should be with issue, correct?

FYI @ Kaido: Others on here have been using the VoodooHDA.kext to repair the audio on the UD3P after the 10.5.8 update. I was hoping to find a more suitable solution, but nothing has magically appeared so far. It's just too messy for my tastes, but I'm using it on my test partition for now. I have not updated my main partition as of yet and probably won't until a better solution is found.

Sounds like good news all around. I think I'll probably wait for Snow Leopard to mature through a few incremental patches before leaving Leopard behind but am looking forward to the performance boost!

You guys are gonna love me for this one.

http://www.darwinx86.org/applications/utilitaires-osx86

They have 10.5.7 and 10.5.8 specific audio kexts. VoodooHDA sound gets horrible when waking up from sleep (try it out). These kexts will AUTOMATICALLY detect a change between headphones and rear speakers.

If you are a pure vanilla, all in the /E/E folder like me, you MUST copy the following kexts from your /S/L/E folder to /E/E otherwise they will not work.

IOAudioFamily
IOACPIFamily (I think)
OSvKernDSPLib

I also do NOT have audio strings in my boot.plist file.

Sounds good to me, but I am having a bit of a problem with the language (French?), I assume the top 2 posts are what you are referring to. Any clarification would be appreciated by those of us old school people here that only speak one language.
