Had a drea, where I stuck two sticks off ddr 3 with two SSDs and fit it into a 5.25"

would this even work? In the dream the "drive" was far faster than any SSD having a seek time in nano seconds not micro seconds.

no it wasn't a RAMdisk it was two SSDs in RAID 0 with a huge cache the RAM held the data until the drives could write it. It is hard to describe it had a seek time that was faster than an SSD but it did not hold the full contents of the SSD. The two SSDs were OCZ Vector drives. they and the RAM hooked up through a cable to a PCIe 4or 8X slot I don't know if they have 4X but in the dream that's what it was.
I have used IRAM's and it was nothing like them.

It just sped up everything like writing to the drive was insanely fast. It was just a dream I have them a lot about tech.

high performance RAID controllers typically have large amounts of cache on them. Some, I believe, are regular ddr(1/2/3) chips you can upgrade

Fast would be a 32 channel NAND controller built into the die of the cpu, with the flash in a DIMM form on the motherboard next to main memory. With phase change memory, you could have the equivalent of DDR3 and NAND in one, with both running over the same bus. I have commented that microsoft does not appear to be preparing for the arrival of these new types of memory by designing their OS to treat storage the same way it treats RAM. Think about it... if you had a computer with 128GB of MRAM or memristors or PCM or whatever, and it was all unified, then why would you need to load programs into memory? But you know windows would still do it. lol it is funny to me to think about it but you know microsoft is going to be the last company to redesign for this.

I'm not sure how you would have them write that code, considering there isn't any hardware for them to test against yet.

Once this stuff actually exists in a commercial form, Windows will have a way to take advantage of it.

As SSDs are already pretty much saturating 6GB/S SATA channels how exactly are you proposing moving 10 times as much data around on the same interface?

What you want is a RAM disk and they already exist.

Intel/AMD just need to make CPU's with 1 TB of storage on die that's as fast as L1 cache.

You would still need to load things even if you used unified storage/RAM. Take Linpack for example. The actual program itself is around 3 megabytes, but can take up hundreds of gigs of RAM doing a single problem. Have a beginners grasp of a subject before you come into HT pointing fingers.

With how cheap ram is I'm surprised there are no devices where you can plug in like 24 sticks and it shows up as a normal hard drive via sata. Oh, I'm sure there could possibly be some, but I mean, that they're actually common and easily obtainable. There could also be a battery pack so it keeps. The battery would charge when there's power applied to it, and it would be a battery that is easy to change. You'd want to change it when the system is powered on. Imagine that as an OS drive.

it wasn't on a SATA interface it was PCIexpress
it sat in a 5.25 drive bay took up two of them and had a cable going down to a PC board that plugged into a PCIe slot

Yeah using sata would be more ideal though. There are more sata ports than PCI slots. I have seen actual SSDs that sit in a pcie slot though. But it's kinda a waste of a slot when you can just use sata.
