Had a mobo go south...

I also posted this in the hardware forum. I didn't know where this question would be best suited. I need to know if underclocking a cpu is hazardous to its health. I had a K62 500 working on appropriate motherboard till it took a dive. I am now running the processor clocked to a 366 because of limitations of my budget and the only mobo I had available. Will any harm be done???

just make sure the voltage is right. if it is you "shouldn't" have any problems.

The least you can do is set that old mainboard to 2.0x multiplier so you'll get 400 MHz. The K6-2 does 6.0x at the multiplier setting that used to mean 2.0x to older processors.

Are we talking software 2.0x or via jumper??? And sorry so late to return. I've been working odd hours....

Whatever your mainboard offers - jumpers or software setting through BIOS. As I said already, the K6-2 does 6.0x at the same setting that used to mean "do 2.0x" to older processors.

Very old /366 and below speed grades don't, but yours is a /500 and has that for sure.

I've underclocked before, (by accident didn't know the jumper settings), put your finger on the processor and check the heat after its on awhile, it will probably run cooler than normal and prolong its life instead of burning it up , which is what overclocking it does.
And if you have the jumper setting book check the voltage, or ck www.motherboards.org if you need jumper settings.
