I think some states mandate that X percent of company parking spaces be handicapped spaces. (Probably a far more complex formula than that, but you get the idea) Your company may not have a choice in the matter.

There are quite a few disabilities that aren't "obvious." How do you spell systic fibrosis? I don't know, but I knew this cute looking girl who had it and got yelled at by tons of assholes who saw her parking in a handicapped space. My uncle looks normal but has a very bad knee. So don't be too quick to judge and ESPECIALLY don't put your foot in your mouth and yell at someone.

Here on campus, people with Handicapped permits can park in any spot. Like any parking spot. (Handicapped spots fill up quick sometimes, and the Uni doesn't want to discriminate) Since you have to pay through the nose for parking permits otherwise, a lot of people try to get Handicapped permits for things like stubbed toes.

Yes, but the people with less obvious conditions should still have a blue sign.

No blue sign and look fine = get yelled at.

having a father who uses a handicap space, it's nice to have them.

but 33 is excessive in nearly any situation -- unless the parking lot has 500 spots and 33 of those are designated for handicapped drivers. it doesn't sound like that's the case. maybe you can vent to building management or something. get someone on the case to count the average use of handicap spots at various hours of the day during a week or two-week period and propose, based on your findings, to eliminate the excess if it's legal to do so.

Maybe the company doesn't feel up to building a gym or offering free memberships to gyms to help lower the insurance rates and stuff since so many people are fat, and since it's cheaper for them just to make you walk, they see it as a win-win situation..
The comment about fat people parking - a lot of people with handicapped plates have the "handicap" of being so fat they can't walk, or walk any "distance" without keeling over with a heart attack, so their doctors sign the forms to get those spots, when they should be walking from the far end of the parking lot... If they have a heart attack and die, its just one less burden on the world.

Sometimes it is not that obvious. My wife, who is just 31, has had JRA since she was 1 years old. She now needs a total hip replacement because the ball & socket is almost gone. She however feels it necessary to hide the pain, try the best she can to hide the limp, and sometimes not park in a handicapped space because she doesn't want people looking at her.

You would never know from looking at her that anything is wrong. It is also very hard to find a doctor that wants to perform the surgury due to her age. I just hope after the surgury this year, she has no more pain.

Obvious or not, you still need a sticker or one of those neat little hanging signs on the mirror.

I usually call the cops. Even if the offender gets off with a warning, it sends a signal that trolls like me will use cell phones for good causes.

VA hospitals are another bad situation too.
They have whole lots dedicated to handicapped parking.
They're so big some folks ask for special permits to park in special areas within the handicapped lots. Just so they can be REALLY close.

I got into a fight with another driver a couple weeks ago over handicapped spaces.

I was pulling into a store parking lot for a short, 15 second trip to grab pills before going to work. there were literally no other parking spaces other than a handicapped spot. it was either park in the handicapped spot or drive away and wait till the next day to pick up the drugs. so I parked in the handicapped space (left my 4-ways on and the engine running).

as I'm walking into the store, some guy walks up to me and starts yelling at me for being inconsiderate for parking in the handicapped space. I look back at the car he just came out of, and this jerk is parked illegally, blocking in 4 other cars. if a handicapped person pulled up to the lot, they wouldn't have been able to get to the spot because he was blocking it!

People who are obese for no other reason than they are fat lazy people need should not get handicap parking. It only perpetuates the problem. Instead i want to see FAT BASTARD parking. Make those cows park as far away as possible to work off some of that wieght.

I got a friend in a wheel chair and he just parks in 2 spots diagonaly in his van so the lift opens to the roadway.

Any ways what I was saying is this build has lots of parking problems (I forgot to mention the companies other building across the street has such bad parking people have to park down the road and ride the company shuttle to the 2 buildings) and the number of unoccupied handicap spots is indiative of an large excess.

I know where the OP is coming from. I work in a corporate building that has essentially no visitors, of the 300 cars in the parking lot, 295 are the exact same people every day. We have probably 15 handicap parking spots and exactly 1 employee who needs them. So every day he has his choice of 15 parking spots.

I'm not so lazy that it makes a big difference to me - but it certainly reeks of poor planning. (or more likely, misguided building regulations)

Edit: Ironically the other building I work in, we have significantly more parking spaces than offices, however the spaces are lined too close together - to the point where if everyone parked their normal size car perfectly, you still have to be careful to avoid opening your door into another car. But it is impossible to self-adjust the parking spot unless everyone in a row does it exactly the same... so you end up with cars parked completely randomly throughout the lot, with some people taking up 2 spaces accidentally, some taking up 2 on purpose, others just saying to hell with it and parking in the very last rows, etc.
