What he broke was a waxed cylinder used in Edison phonographs. If it was indeed one of a kind (and they are pretty rare to begin with) it could have been worth tens of thousands of dollars. Assuming it was on loan to the show, imagine being the owner and watching this on the show! OMG :Q

I still say it is staged as a joke. One, he made a point to say it was one of a kind. Two, he put an extremly lot of force onto the cylinder. Had it just been a case of applying a little too much pressure, it wouldn't have shattered halfway across the floor like it did.
