he was holding on to it hard because he's an old man with shaky hands, he didn't want to drop it, so he held it hard....too hard apparently.

Staged??? Give me a break.

What would be the benefit in staging something like that?

What he broke was a waxed cylinder used in Edison phonographs. If it was indeed one of a kind (and they are pretty rare to begin with) it could have been worth tens of thousands of dollars. Assuming it was on loan to the show, imagine being the owner and watching this on the show! OMG :Q

i watched the part over an over where he handles it before it brakes, at first it kinda looked staged, but after repeated viewings it seems he grasped it with his thumbs over the top on the ends and his fingers below. He probably did this to stablize it. The tube is hollow and wax so a small amount of presure in this grasp configuration would send a force upwards on the space between his thumbs on the top which would provide a unhealthy amount of leverage.

I still say it is staged as a joke. One, he made a point to say it was one of a kind. Two, he put an extremly lot of force onto the cylinder. Had it just been a case of applying a little too much pressure, it wouldn't have shattered halfway across the floor like it did.

Well......er...if it were indeed 'one of a kind' what would be so weird that he would tell the host and audience that it was.....'one of a kind'. I think he was just a vicitm of unfortunate circumstance of a very ironic nature. I was just listening to NPR a couple of weeks ago about (probably this guy) how they are taking all these wax drums and archiving them over for history's sake, guess there going to be short one!

I actually saw that live. The look on Chris' face was priceless.

Haven't you guys ever been extremely nervous when holding something, consequently breaking it? The guy was so damn nervous he probably didn't realize he was putting so much pressure on it.

Real methinks...

On one side he is deffinitely shaking, nervous and seems to be trying to show something with his hands.

On the other side he sure as hell did look like he pushed hard on it, and neither him nor the host seemed to care all that much (besides the swear).

Would love to find out if it was a real one or some replica.

Yeah, I thought it was very strange how they didn't seem to care that much.
