Hey guys,

I'm getting pretty tired of paying frickin $18 for someone to use some clippers on my hair and cut it down to 3/4 length while I could just do that my own in the backyard. Does anyone cut their own hair and have a recommendation on clippers for home?

Oh, and not a parody thread; just noticed that someone else had a similar one for a beard...

For 3/4" pretty much any clippers with guards will do. Andis, Oster and Wahl are good clippers, just depends on how much you want to spend.

Clippers have saved me more money than anything else I have bought. I have to keep my hair very short for work and was spending $50 a month getting cut. Bought some clippers and let the wife do it. Probably save $1k with that $40 purchase. She does mine and my stepsons, saves a lot of time and money.

My wife cuts mine. No problems whatsoever. If you're going with a standard length it should be fairly easy for you to do, but you may want another set of hands to get the areas you can't reach.

Also, you still should trim the base of your neck where the hair growth stops. That might be a bit difficult as a one man job.

You do need to cut your own hair, I heard the girl that does it talks about you behind your back.
"He's so cheap, he gives me three pennies as a tip!"
"He tries to talk on his phone and play Angry Birds while I'm cutting his hair!"
"He smells like someone shit in his mouth, he swallowed it, shit it out, then ate it again!"
That's just what I've heard...

I've been cutting my hair for over 15 years now and these $20 clippers SUCK. I had at least 5-10 of those and I would not by them again.

Best clippers I have had to date (which BTW have lasted me AT LEAST 10 years at this point) is Remington Vacume clippers. It's great for kids (much less hair to clean up/deal with).

If you want the best clippers, get professional ones that come with metal clips (that Barbers use). They go for about $100+ and just the clips are good 20 or so.

I made myself a promise to buy professional ones the day Remington goes, but that thing has been going on FOREVER.

I have Wahl clippers that I bought at Target about 5 years ago (~20 dollars, I think). I use them to cut my hair and trim my beard, and they're still going strong.

I ran into the same issue when I moved down here a well. I was paying about $20 for a haircut (including tip), and at best, I might have been able to pay $15. What makes it worse is that I cut my hair every 2 weeks (3 at the latest). So, I'm saving ~$500 a year just doing it myself.

Although, I don't worry about doing it outside. I keep the vacuum outside of the bathroom and cover the sink with a plastic trash bag. I also use one of those barber aprons that keeps the majority of the hair off myself. That cost me about $20 on Amazon.

At one point, I tried a wireless trimmer, but it was a piece of junk. That's probably partially my own fault as I ignored the number one rule of battery-operated devices: never skimp on them. If it costs about as much as a comparable wired unit, chances are the battery is a piece of junk, and it will be rather powerless or barely last long enough. I pretty much had to keep it plugged in, and you could really hear the difference when I did so. One thing I would like to find is a good wired trimmer with a no-tangle cord.

Although, my wireless trimmer did give me one thing that my previous set(s) didn't have: ear tapers. I'm rather fond my left/right ear tapers, and I even found that the right ear taper works well to help provide a slight gradient on the back.

I currently use the Andis BGRC+. Its a little more than I was looking to spend, but I use it 3 times a week. No issues with power or battery life, but I did by an optional cord attachment just in case.

Yeah, I definitely didn't pay $200 for mine. I'd certainly have a lot more faith in a product like that!

It looks like that company has some wired trimmers with no-tangle cords, but they don't come as a full kit (with the guides). You can spend another $20 and get a pack of 8, but that doesn't include the tapers. All I need is #1, #3, #6, left ear and right ear.
