basically, you have almost a complete system. but can you use it? if you cant use it, you will pretty much run through the period when you can return the parts or exchange them if they dont work. and you'd be out of luck.

but, um, i would get a new HDD. if i were you.

the gf4 can handle HL2, but the gf4mx performs like a gf2.

Looks good, you can even plan to do some overclocking which always helps

I would think with a 2400+ and a GF44200 or higher series... not an MX... Not a chance actually ( 640x480 any one)

Considering you are going to a 9800 pro soon, then i wouldn't worry...If you plan for it to be awhile, you could pick up a Ti4200 for about $100 which isn't a bad deal. You could then hold out longer and get the next generation card after the 9800 pro... ( which would most likely geared even MORE towards Doom 3 ) .

Get a Ti4200, it's more than worth the extra cash. They can probably be found for under $100 now, and many can hit near-4600 levels, which should be sufficient for HL2.

For the CPU, you'd be much better off with a Barton 2500+, which will be fair game for moderate overclocking even with the HSF you have.

One thing I notice is that several components you have listed are crappy and you say "will be getting something better soon." This, to me at least, is quite a waste of cash. If you have a computer up and running now there's no rush to put together a system with some great components and other crappy components... just wait till you have everything, then do it.

Other than the CPU and video, the biggest improvement you could make is to get a nice (and relatively cheap) 7200RPM HDD with 8MB cache. The Western Digital WD800JB (80GB) is quite nice and goes for under $90 now.

thanks for all the replies i plan soon to get a radeon 9800 as planned and for x-mas im getting a WD 200GB so the 50GB will do me fine for now and yes i was thinking of replacing the amd 2400 with a 2500 barton and use the 2400+ for some other system

If you dont already have the Antec 300W PSU you may want to consider upgrading to a bit more powerful unit. It should be a reasonable PSU, but if you throw in a Radeon 9800 and are running a bunch of HDs and other things you may be stressing that PSU a bit much. Seeing as money seems pretty tight for you I would ditch the idea of the Radeon 9800 for right now. The GF4MXSE wont do much for games, but a GF4 4200 would be respectable and not all that much more. Then, 6 months from now or whenever upgrade to a decent new card.
