You guys really need get a life! Seriously though it had great graphics, least on my 7900gt cranked up, the action was pretty good but I really like the vehicle endeavors of the original HL2 which I am sure will be the in the next episode.

Question before I buy ....
.... My PC ran HL2 fine. Does Episode 1 require better hardware? I should mentuion that it ran fine, but with reduced setttings. This is no power house I am running.

AMD 2800+ with a Gforce 6800 (mid-level card from that line I think) If the first 3 released were the 6800, 6800GS and 6800GT, I think it's the GS that I have.

Well, if you dont turn on hdr, i'm sure it will run very similar to hl2, hdr is a HUGE hit on performance.

Mine seems to freeze while loading the first level at the beginning of the game. I just gets stuck in the middle of the loading bar. One thing that I noticed is that Steam is still doing some updates, even though it told me I can start playing. Could the updating be interfering with the loading in some way?
I have an X800XTPE, but with somewhat old drivers. Could new drivers help out?
Also I set the HDR to bloom only which I think should work.

Tomorrow I can try some things including drivers, and let steam finish updating.

Any more help would be appreciated.

Make sure your firewall isn't blocking HL2 and that you have the latest drivers for your video card.

Great game. IMO better than HL2 the original. It seems to have better direction and more engaging. Though Freeman's silence is beginning to bother me. And I hate how inaccurate the weapons are :| gimmie a CS rifle please

Thanks, updating finished 100% but it did not help.

I tried disabling HDR and AA/AF and it loaded fine. Some slowdowns though.
I will install new drivers and give it another go.

New drivers installed and it works fine. Surprisingly full HDR works, I thought X800 did not support it. Bloom makes everything dark, HDR gives the better color and lighting then normal, but it does need some refinement as it is not very smooth and sometimes to bright.

De fragmenting the drive got rid of the slowdowns.

Anybody now of other tweaks for Ep. 1. To help it load faster and maybe not spend all the time logging into steam at start?

I have been playing Ep 1 today, after playing FEAR over the last few weeks. Honestly I am a little disappointed with it. I personally think FEAR is much better looking (though I am certainly a gameplay-over-graphics guy), and I find I have gotten a little bored with the HL2 universe overall. I was a fanatical HL fan, but I guess I don't totally love the HL2 franchise generally.
