It might be today that HL2 might change to gold status. Either this is one huge tease, or Valve and the distributer are ironing out the details.

Not to rain on people's parade, but the preload doesn't really mean anything, other than most of the art and sound assests being finished. This late in development most of this stuff won't change anyway, which is why it's available to preload. I imagine most of their time is being spent on bug fixing and playtesting. So the game could be one week or 8 weeks from actually going gold.

This is just a lame paper launch. Valve is allowing you to grace your hard drive with a huge pile of useless encrypted bits that will lay there undisturbed until the still unknown release date of HL2, at which point you'll have to download still more crap (This isn't the whole game they're preloading, just stuff that's done), or just go buy the game on CD. Notice there's no announcement of HL2 having gone gold or RTM. They're just throwing us a bone because of all the Doom 3 hype.

To what end? It's NOT the entire game, only the stuff that happens to be finished.

it will put a lot less strain on the steam network fi you allow users to pre-load the game now vs having everyone download the complete game later

I think the preload is VERY smart. Has anyone even tried to get it? When I did, the servers were packed! Can you imagine how much stress people would put on their servers if they just waited to release the full game at once?
