Half Life 2 + SBLive problem

I've installed HL2 and found that my soundcard (SBLive) produces no sound at all.

At the same time I have an onboard soundcard Realtek AC97, I switched to this soundcard and this works fine.

So far HL2 is the only instance where SBLive does not work at all. I've checked the driver and it is up to date, with no issues with DirectX 9.0b.

For now I'm just resorting to switching over to RealTek (its output lined in to SBLive so that I can keep my existing speaker connections) whenever I play HL2.

Anyone else with the same experience or know how to fix this?

...I've got the same problem.
I've also got onboard RealTek sound (nForce2 mobo)...but how do you route the sound through the SBLive??

The weird thing is, I get perfect 2-channel sound, but if I switch to 5.1 channel, the sound dissapears. (on the SBLive)

Whoa, my mistake.. it's the same situation as yours, my SBLive DOES work after all, but only for 2-speaker mode. I suppose it's some kinda driver problem. I thought I saw some discussion on this issue from googling, but I forget.

ps. Routing the sound basically means I connect the output port of the Realtek to the line-in port of the SBLive using a dual-ended audio jack. Well, that's no longer necessary now...

I recall a post about this on the steam forums. I thought they had fixed this error in one of the recent steam updates, though.

Is steam up to date?
Do you get the problem only in HL2 or can you play CS: Source or HL2 Deathmatch with sound?

This may be an IRQ issue sepecific to your hardware configuration.

Make sure you don't have both sets of drivers installed. Use one sound source or the other.

I see. Anyway this problem applies for CS:S as well as HL2.

I've always had both RealTek and SBLive drivers on my system and able to switch between both without problems. At least until HL2.

also make sure u dont have any of ur EAX EQ settings turned on like hiphop, rock, things like that. turn them all off

Hm. I got it to work. Originally, I was running without any drivers installed at all (using the built-in Windows ones)...but now, I installed the Creative SBLive drivers for XP. I never had the RealTek drivers installed, either.

It works perfectly now.

Using both is just fine. Windows knows how to handle multiple sound cards just like it knows how to handle multiple video cards.

I have two soundcards since my computer is hooked up to a TV permanently. One soundcard goes to the TV and one to my computer speakers. This way, my friends can watch movies on TV while I listen to mp3s.
