So Half-Life is 10 years old now. To celebrate, Valve apparently decided to make it $1 for today. http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/

Does anyone else remember their first experience with the game?

I tried it briefly... and after killing a couple dozen headcrabs I decided that "it sucked".

I played it years later, sometime around 2003 I think, and was absolutely mesmerized. This game, with it's mediocre story, terrible graphics, and dated gameplay, was the best experience I had ever had in singleplayer on my PC. It just tells that mediocre story SO ****ING WELL.

I love this game. I hope you do to. Please share your first experience stories with it

Played it on a 486 machine that had some type of primitive video accelerator. Used headphones. It was the first time I ever ducked in real life while playing a video game.

Played it when it came out - I remember the intro when you were in the tram going to the building. It was like.. what the hell.. this is awesome. Then you're walking around and the accident happens and it's like WTF. A couple levels later when I was hiding behind a box and the soldiers threw a grenade to flush me out, I was like.. stunned. Nowadays that's nothing but back then it was groundbreaking I couldn't believe it. I grabbed it for $1.

Nothing will ever come close to what Half-Life did to the first-person-shooter genre. It's quite simple, iD Software gave it birth, and Valve Software educated it.

I bought this back sometime ~2000. Had no idea what the hell it was, but looked good. I picked a good one, loved that game.

That must have been seriously painful to play it on a 486.

my first experience was my first time using a mouse to aim + keys to move. Took me awhile to get the swing of it, I used arrow keys + mouse. My friend and I stayed up and played it endlessly for a few days. I remember having huge issues figuring out the first crowbar part lol.

I still remember trying to play it on my 800Mb HDD with no luck. Everything that wasn't bolted down got deleted, but after cache space, I was still 100Mb short of the necessary HDD space needed. Think that machine broke a short time afterwards, which brought along a new and bigger drive. I did nothing malicious...

Tried the demo way back when on a crappy computer that couldn't handle it. It was unplayable, so I gave up until I got it today, hopefully this time goes better.

I think I would be more tempted to pick up Half-Life: Source... If this was with Blue Shift and Opposing Force for real cheap I would pick it up in a heart beat. Ahh what the hell, it's just a buck. I'll see if I can't find a way to get Steam to accept my credit card again.

I actually played HL2 before I played HL. I remember thinking with HL2 "WTF is going on?" and got the HL Anthology with Blue Shift etc. to fill in the blanks.

"Ohhhhh, that's who Barney is."

I grew up with FPS games and I've never played HL1 all the way through - I just saw my brother play parts of it as a kid. I'd like to play some Natural Selection, though. And this will fill in the gaps of HL2.

I remember clearly in the opening levels when I was escaping the first office complex. I was in a room with no apparent exit until I saw a ventilation duct. I bashed it with the crowbar and thought, 'wow that looks dark.' I turned on the trusty flashlight and

HEADCRAB!!!!

Fell right out of my chair. Brilliant

Got this game for Christmas the year it came out but since I hadn't heard anything about it and since I got a few other games I was actually interested in, it just sat on my desk collecting dust for a year or so. I finally heard someone mention it somewhere and remembered I had it. I gave it a go and found perhaps the best FPS I have ever played, until I played HL2 that is.
An amazing game that gave birth to the FPS that told a story.

Played it years ago when it first came out. IMO, it is still the best OVERALL PC game ever.

I'll never forget that "blagababalabalablarg" sound the headcrabs make when they jump at you. Strikes fear into the hearts of men.

I purchased it on a whim and was hooked as soon as I was on the train pulling into the lab station. Seeing things happening as I was going along on the train was a "holy crap" moment in my gaming life.

I played this right before HL2 came out so I could get the back story, and wasn't expecting it to be much. Damn was I wrong. Favorite moments:
1. The opening train ride/credits was f*cking genius
2. The first time you get to the surface and see the soldiers coming to get you. A truly great wtf moment.
3. Fighting the Grunt the first time. IIRC he's in a stassis chamber that gets broken.
4. First time arriving in Xen. Another great wtf moment.
