Um, Africans come in many different shades naturally as well.It was white people who created the "One Drop" rule. That was not our creation. Many of us have mixed ancestry and that's why blacks come in different shades.
This dates back to slavery days where white men would rape black slaves and bore bi-racial children that were automatically considered black due to the One Drop rule. If you were so lucky to be light enough or to have a father with a soft spot for you..you could work in the big house...still a slave, but treated slightly better.

Somali, Malagasy, khoi, san, Ethiopian, some xhosa are light skinned . . . Hell, there was an entire sub-trade based around the highly desirable "red" Igbo. And that doesn't even cover Africans who like whites immigrated as indentured servants or those free blacks who have mixed race blood from marriage, before miscegenation laws became commonplace. I just find it interesting that you think so many blacks were in Interracial relationships during Slavery days. Being free doesn't mean that people in free states didn't have strong feelings about race mixing. You could still get lynched or murdered by whites in Detroit the same as you could have been in Mobile. The only difference was that you were "free".
