halo3 or gears2?

Been playing CoD4 since mid-December. It's been an awesome experience, but I'm growing tired of multiplayer and I've finished the single player campaign. I'm looking for another shooter with a good multiplayer.

Right now I'm looking at halo3 and gears2. I've heard tons about the issues with gears2 and its multiplayer, but even still it looks like people still play it quite a bit. I'm also well aware of halo3 and its huge following. My only concern is that the single player will be as boring to me as the original halo was.

Looking for opinions on which one will give me the best bang for my buck. My biggest pet peeve about CoD4 is how narrow doorways can sometimes be along with how you can sometimes get snagged on debris. I'm kinda leaning towards halo3 because in the vids I've seen of it there doesn't seem to be alot of debris to work around. The maps also remind me of some custom maps I played in CS and CSS back in the day. But, I also like the premise of some of the multiplayer in gears2.

Any help is appreciated.

Considering that you spend maybe 10 hours on single player and hundreds of hours on multiplayer, I'd say single player has a relatively insignificant impact on "bang for your buck." I haven't been able to get into Gears of War multiplayer... just didn't enjoy it as much as Halo 3 or CoD4.

I never could get into Gears multiplayer as much as I like Halo 3 and CoD4 multiplayer, but it's really a personal taste kinda thing. Gears and Halo/CoD4 are completely different styles.

So far I'm really enjoying Gears2 single player over Gears 1, and I enjoyed that more than Halo 3. But Halo 3 has the better multiplayer in the long run IMO. Horde mode doesn't appeal to me at all, and the gameplay just doesn't sit well for MP for me.

Gears 1 > Halo 3 > Gears 2.

Between the two choices you listed, if multiplayer is your goal, get Halo 3. Eventually if they fix Gears 2's problems the order will change but they've already lost a TON of fans because of 'em.

it wasn't one of your listed ones, but i like battlefield bad company for multiplayer. it is class-based and objective oriented. two teams: one attacking two objectives at a time and one defending. there is no deathmatch, just the main gold rush mode (and conquest if you liked that from older BF). it can be repetitive, but games are different because of the people you are playing with, and destructible environments, which makes a surprising difference. bonus: cheaper than the two games you mentioned.

Whoa, are you rating Gears 1 above Gears 2 for multiplayer only? Gears 2 campaign thus far has been leaps and bounds over gears 1.

He seemed to be multiplayer intensive, although I certainly wouldn't call Gears 2 multiplayer leaps and bounds better, although it was pretty good. Course, when I played it co-op as Dom I got hit with about 13 glitches that ruined it for me.

Gears 2 has a much darker story/deeper story, I'll say that. But I thought overall the plot of Gears 1 was better. Guess what I'd say is that Gears 2 would make a better movie, for me Gears 1 was more fun.

I said the CAMPAIGN was leaps and bounds better in gears 2. I'm sure the multiplayer isn't that much different. So far every part in gears 2 for me has had some 'holy shit!' moment when something major happens I didn't expect. I didn't get that very often with gears 1. Also there was a chapter or 2 in gears 1 that was just plain annoying and not fun at all. The vehicle section in gears 1 with the bats and the searchlight thing was just annoying and designed poorly IMO. So far I've had no annoying moments in gears 2 so I'm liking it much more.

If you like CoD4, you'll love the W@W multiplayer. I think the maps and gameplay balance are better. It's not a snipe and frag fest.

Hell no! Some maps are snipe fests, and the re-spawning is horrible. I love getting re-spawned 2 or 3 times in a row right in front of someone where I cant even take a step before getting killed.

i've spawned right behind people and killed them and vice versa SO MANY TIMES.

also, the later-level guns are so much better than the lower-level guns that it's not fair at all. at least in cod4, an m16 and mp5 are still considered great guns once you unlock all of them.

I've been playing WaW for a few days now, and the map design is absolutely terrible. They're too big, there's too much clutter, there's no "flow" built into the maps, and the spawn system puts you right in the middle of enemy clusters, and they you.

The maps are beautiful, the graphics are slightly improved over COD4, but *ALL* of WaW's maps play like COD4's Bog and Countdown, which suffer from the same randomness.

OP, I could never recommend Halo 3 to anyone, as I never understood the draw. Despite my complaints about WaW, COD4 > WaW > Gears 2 > pancakes with diarrhea spread > Halo 3.

And as I said, the CAMPAIGN in Gears 1 was more enjoyable. There's 1 vehicular sequence in Gears 1 that lasts all of 4 minutes and is not that annoying. There are several in Gears 2 and none are particulary enjoyable...they tried to make it TOO big, badass, etc. In Gears 1 the Brumak is "the" ultimate bad guy, he's so tough you have to run from the only one you see. In Gears 2 you drop them like flies...they lose all their coolness. Sequences like the tank level in Gears 2 are downright annoying, on Insane we were being killed by a turret we couldn't even see. It wasn't that it was overly challenging, it was that the designers made it have almost infinite line of sight and it would kill us as soon as we popped around a corner.

As for holy crap moments, there were a few of 'em, but nothing to really write home about. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent game/campaign, but as a total package Gears 1 was better.

I remember the escape from the berzerker, the brumack fight, and the last battle with RAAM being more satisfying and enjoyable than most events in G2.

I'm playing through the Gears2 campaign right now and I have so say that, IMO, it's much more enjoyable than Gears1 .. and I really liked Gears1, too. I liked taking the Centaur (vehicle) up the mountain. I thought it was a nice change of pace from cover, shoot, advance, repeat (not that that's a bad formula).

People prolly won't like my opinion but I hate the Halo series personally so I would say Gears 2 by default, but as noted above there are some issues with the mp. Campaign and horde more are a blast though. I believe battle field bad company is on sale at BB this week for cheap, that could be a good option if you are looking for mp mostly.

Halo 3. GOW2 has a great campaign, but the multiplayer can get really stale. Halo's multiplayer is still being supported with map packs and achievements.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'm going with halo3. Are you able to select the server you want to join in halo3 or is it like most other games where you're automatically connected to a server?

You are automatically connect. And unlike many games, you cannot select which game that you will be playing. You select a 'gamelist'.
