So I just read this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18353055

and saw this:

foetus

Hal please tell me how you pronounce this word.

Do y'all grow foe - tusses instead of fee - tusses?

I really hope y'all don't grow foe - tusses cause it sounds like faux - tusses which means cloning which means we need a new thread.

From Wikipedia:
The word fetus (plural fetuses) is from the Latin fētus (“offspring”, “bringing forth”, “hatching of young”).[3] It has Indo-European roots related to sucking or suckling, from the Aryan prefix bheu-, meaning "To come into being".[4]
Fœtus or foetus is the British, Irish and Commonwealth spelling, which has been in use since at least 1594.[4] It arose as a hypercorrection based on an incorrect etymology (i.e. due to insufficient knowledge of Latin) that may have originated with an error by Saint Isidore of Seville, in AD 620.[5][6] This spelling is the most common in most Commonwealth nations (except in medical literature, where its use is barred). The etymologically correct original spelling, fetus is used in Canada and the United States. In addition, fetus is now the standard English spelling throughout the world in medical journals.[7] The spelling "faetus" was used historically.[8]
The spelling in the Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary, Third Edition (1996), page 537, is 'foetus' with 'foetuses' as the plural; 'fetus' (page 514) is given as the 'US variant of foetus.' However, later editions of the OED clarify the etymology behind the Commonwealth spelling.

To add to the above, the liquor in my state (Pennsylvania) is state-controlled. This means that I cannot buy wine or liquor from anywhere besides an official state store, and I cannot purchase wine/liquor and beer from the same store. Additionally, I cannot buy alcohol of any kind in supermarkets or convenience stores. I can, however, buy beer in delis and certain beer stores. Not sure what the law is there.

It's about as stupid as it sounds, but as of 2011 it's bringing over $40 million to the state so it won't be changing anytime soon.

That's really interesting, I'd never heard about state alcohol stores.

How do they decide what to stock? Can't producers of alcohol use the argument that it's government discrimination if the shop doesn't stock their products?

Sorry to bump this without making it a grammar/howwespellshit/whatconstitutesabuiscuit argument but I'm genuinely interested in the state owned liqueur store thing.

Are only state stores allowed to sell hard spirits?
Who decides what spirits they stock?
What about the price if theres no competing market?
What if I have a product I want stocked, as I cant (presumably) open my own store, if the state one wont stock it that would be way unfair?

Also what about the OMG SOCIALISM argument?

Technically, they aren't state-run, the state sells franchise licenses to individuals who are then in charge of running the liquor store. But the state does keep a fairly close eye on the franchises and if they find impropriety (ie, selling to minors), they can revoke the franchise license and sell it to someone else. You aren't allowed to open up a liquor store without the state franchise license and they only give out a certain number to keep liquor stores from springing up everywhere.

That's how it is in Oregon anyway. It varies state to state. In California, you can buy liquor at supermarkets and corner stores, which is obviously a lot more lax.

Ah, fair enough. It sounded a bit different in the early post. Thanks for clarifying.
