Just got back from Solo. Maybe I saw the movie through an anti-hype train but it was remarkably fun and more or less met or exceeded my expectations.
Yes everything in the movie harkens back to something Han says or does in the OT, but that's kinda the point. I thought the explanations this movie provides are handled in a more or less smart manner given the subject material.
Is the lead actor going to capture a young Harrison Ford? Of course not, but he does a perfectly serviceable job of being a Scrappy overly confident young rogue that you would expect Han to be. Same can be said of Don Glover as Lando.
The Droid was pretty good comic relief. Not far off from the Droid in rogue one. Her lines were played for you to laugh at, and were delivered in an earnest in universe way. They went a little over the top with the exaggerated female walk, but meh whatever.
Just enough plot to move the film along from fight scene to chase scene to fight scene... Sounds like exactly what I paid for. Didnt drop 40 bucks at the theater to watch Hamlet.
I've heard that no one hates star wars more than Star Wars fans. People's reactions to Solo (and TLJ, and TFA, AND THE PREQUELS, AND...) makes me think there is some truth in that.
You know what you're getting, sit back and enjoy the ride! If not, there is always fan fiction for you to write...
