What do you think of the Rugor SR 22?

It's an excellent little pistol. Light, ergonomic (comes with 2 grip sizes), easy to break down/clean, and fairly accurate. Plus, most aren't picky with ammo.

I love mine.

Meh, we've had plenty of ammo for a few months now.. In my area, at least.

9mm is the most popular round in the world. There's some pros and cons to that. If "shit hit the fan" it would be the most accessible ammo.

I can't stand 40. There's no modern benefit with current ammunition, in my opinion, over +p 9mm. Almost all .40 chambered firearms are ridiculously 'snappy'.

I will only buy .380 (for pocket guns), 9mm (for capacity), .45 (for brute force).

You can't brute force with a .40 cal?

The first thing I would do is check out a Sig P229. Much different than that MK.

I would also check out a Glock 19, 17 and 26 in that order.

But I'm a Glock/Sig snob so don't listen to me.

p229 is a lovely lovely weapon

A target .22, then after that a Glock 20. Don't settle for .40 when you want something more powerful than 9mm, get a 10mm.

I think I will be going with a .22 for my next hand gun, I'm really liking the Rugor SR22 so far. I'm not big on Glocks TBH. I know they're good guns, I just don't find them aesthetically pleasing.

Nice choice, if price is a concern, Ruger also offers the Mk III which is pretty popular as well for about 2/3 of the price.

I was just checking ammo prices/availability yesterday. Fortunately I still have a thousand or so rounds for each pf my handguns (.22, .357, .38, .45) remaining from my last bulk purchase. Selection seems to still be shit, and it's expensive as Hell. I want to take my 45 out so badly, but the price per trigger pull is killing me.

Well I went to the same gun shop I bought my 226 from, and the guy tells me that the SP22 is no longer California legal so I ended up getting a Sig Mosquito. Out of the .22 semi-autos they had, it felt the most comfortable in my hand. Insult to injury... I'm limited to 1 firearm purchase every 30 days, (another CA law) so I can't even pick up the gun until 12/8

The silver lining, got to talking to the guy at the store and he gave me some shooting tips. Applied what he said at the range today and my aim is more accurate and my groupings a lot tighter.

Ever considered getting something chambered in .357 sig?

Everything will be a consideration at some point in time

1. Learn about SSE if you want guns that are off roster.

2. Learn about PPT and/or COE if you want to bypass the 1 in 30 days rule. I'm in CA too and I've bought 40 handguns so far this year.

Bought one of these here recently...
http://www.jgsales.com/canik-55-tp-9-9mm-semi-auto-pistol,-desert-tan,-by-cai,-new.-p-61823.html

They also come in other colors and the black version is only $299 so not an expensive investment... After shooting mine I cannot think of a better value in 9mm and now the wife wants one... As for 40 cal I agree it is a rather dying caliber but while still popular it was an odd ball for me... Everything thing I have is either 9mm or 45acp except for one unique pistol I just bought...

The alternative to shoot something different but cheap is one of the 1911's in 22 which I may consider after the first of the year... Lot of choices out there but just starting out it is best to stay with "meat and potatoes" then start adding trimmings or dessert...

1. Where do you live? If you live in Southern California, EBR Works and OC Armory will do SSE. Essentially, you can have non-roster guns sent to them and they will do the single shot conversion for you for around $100. Then you take delivery as you would anything else after the waiting period.

2. COE is the certificate of eligibility. Do a google search for it and 03FFL

I own an SR22 and it's a great 22lr pistol. Of course when I got mine all I could find at a good price was the raspberry color version. Not exactly a manly version, but it worked well for allowing me to teach my wife to shoot better.

My personal favorite range handgun is my Tristar T-120. I picked it up for $300 + tax. Academy sells the blue version for $350 right now + tax. Literally the best full size 9mm handgun I have shot.

Thanks for the info. I'm in San Diego. What exactly is a single shot conversion?

Neither do I, but when you look at 10mm it's the best choice in it's price range.

After 9mm, a lot of people go for something more powerful like .40 or .45, but those are small steps. When you want something with more power than 9mm, skip the minor increases and go straight to 10mm.

My initial thought was a .22 so you could put a lot of rounds downrange for cheap. But I can't remember the last time I saw .22 on the shelf. Everything else is available around here but that.

So that said:

#1. Get a Glock 19. Completely different trigger style and feel to the Sig. It's lighter with a lower bore axis and vastly different trigger. Certainly a different shooting experience. Small enoght to conceal carry, if that's not your thing get the full size 17.

#2. Glock 21: More or less the same as above but in 45ACP.

#3. Get a revolver. Revolvers aren't my thing but for a different experience that will certainly do it. Get one in 357 and you can shoot cheaper 38 rounds at the range.

Stick with 22, 9mm and 45acp. I carry .40 thought not by choice. It's a solution in search of a problem. Stick with the other three. (actually my preferred round is 357sig just to expensive to shoot.)
