Quake World is still my most favorite online game ever. It was really not surpassed in game play until Quake 3 came out.

But Expert CTF with the grapple in Quake World was amazing.

Quake and its various engines (beginning with GLQuake) has had a permanent spot on my hard drive since 1998.

srsly, you are from 1984 and you say you are old? ooh wait, quake 1? so, 1980?

i like quake best as a SP game, with doom2 a close second. doom1 just behind.
i have never played quake MP because we euros had no idea what IDSN was. (most of us didnt even have dialup)

i did play Q3 online in 1998 (?) on my 56k and i logged in to a 220ms server, and i thought i was gonna rape everyone because i had even beaten Xaero at Ultraviolence difficulty and i had beaten Doom2 too!

that feeling lasted about five minutes.

i did not play much Q3 after that because i could not understand why i kept dying (i was playing insta) and i though everyone was hacking because they were going faster than the maximum walking speed of everyone else (=me, who had no idea what strafejump was).

also i played using a trackpad on my mac G3, and if you asked me, i would tell you that "doom 2 was so much better because a real doom player uses the arrow keys - and ctrl to fire - and not the mouse".

i was of the noob.

I went from Doom to Q2, I think I only played the Q1 demo level. Q2 was great for its time -- I remember getting a new video card and it supported the colored lighting. Colored lighting!! Such a difference over the plain lighting on my old card.

iD used to be a great company back in the day, and Carmack was the god of 3D engines.

I've never forget my amazement when I got my first dedicated video card...a Voodoo Banshee 16MB. Going from software Quake to GLQuake made my jaw drop. Newer games like Q2 and Unreal looked even better but I'll never forget how good the original Quake looked.

imho q2 and other fps (which is pretty much all of 'em these days) that incorporated audible footsteps took the paranoia and suspense out of dm. nothing like having to flick 180 degrees every so often while going forward to make sure your opponent wasnt sneaking up on you.

With Quakeworld, you didn't need to worry so much about the connection. I played it fine on a 33.6k connection.

Such hardcore gamers. I'm more of an adventure gamer when it comes to the plot and gameplay. But I still played Q2. Remember you could alter the size of all the players on screen, like make then all skinny or fat? Then later I was blown away by the art design of Q3.

Guess I'll be the first in the thread to say I didn't like Quake. I didn't like all the brown bland environments nor enemy design and I hated anything about going underwater. Enemy design is also bland (Doom is much better). Never tried online multiplayer. Unreal is much better in every way though of course it had a couple years on Quake

I only briefly tried Quake 2 and 3 so don't have much to say. Quake 4 I did play to completion in campaign but found it to be average among FPS games, though it does pick up after you're captured.

I never played Quake singleplayer. I was already very hooked on Doom II multiplayer at that point. My friends and I loaded it up and jumped right into multiplayer and hooked.

Remember when you got your Quake CD, and you had to 'find' servers to join through friends and ocsure web sites and newsgroups?

My name here is directly pulled from Quake. (anyone know what it references?)

Btw, I HATED Quake 2.

I got on the Quake II wagon, played it competitively, was fairly good too.
I credit my quake2 years for the fact I can still go online and whoop 13yo arse in csgo.

All hail the king, the quake franchise.
