The reason why the story sounded so credible is because the government (under George Bush, mind you) investigated the claims and sided with Jamie Leigh Jones' claim of sexual assault and also charged KBR with an inadequate investigation at the time.

The government concluded based on an investigation that she was sexually assaulted and had physical trauma and KBR stopped the investigation. You're also assuming she DIDN'T get raped, even if there are holes in the story.
