Grrrr . . . I just opened my presents from my Dad (aka The World's Most Clueless Gift Purchaser). I love the guy, but jeez. He just came back from spending three weeks in Italy, and my gifts are a pocket corkscrew, a crappy bright-red baseball cap that's all wrinkled, and a small Raymond Chandler compilation ("Later Novels & Other Writings"). I like RC, but I've already read all this stuff and I'll never even break the shrink wrap on this. I bought him a $400 watch for his birthday (which he has apparently managed to get wet, obligating me to spend another $100 or so getting it serviced). I know I'm not a kid anymore, but it is a little annoying. Oh well . . .

Fair enough - I fully admit I'm whining. Actually I know I am my father's favorite person on earth, by far. It just annoys me he is so self-absorbed that he isn't more thoughtful. One year he gave me a copy of TurboTax for Christmas, saying as I opened it that he had accidentally bought two copies, hence the gift. I told him thanks but I didn't need it - I had my taxes prepared and filed free by the military in those days - and we took it back to Costco, where he returned it and kept the money. This is a guy who lives in a $3,000,000 house, with no mortgage.

I am definitely grateful, in any case, for all the things he's done in my life, and that he loves me.
