I've had absolutely no trouble w/my Asus SLI board. Setup was painless and it's been running nonstop since January.

My setup was running great but last week both network ports died - no known reason.

Would show "short" in BIOS and then do a hard lockup in windows - disabled the ports and put in a temporary PCI network card awaiting for a RMA swap.

GuitarDaddy's post are always most helpful also.

I got the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, not for SLI but because like ASUS and I wanted the nForce 4 so I figured that I would go all out. At first I had a lot of problems, not as many as most but enough to wish i had gone with the DFI or Gigabyte. Nothing against them but I think that their boards are ugly and I was never a big overclocker. All the Intel rigs I built never really overclocked that well. Now that some time has past and I have had the opportunity to reformat a few times, learn the board and Do all the updates to the BIOS and such, I have to admit I'm really pleased. The board isn't perfect but with a few more BIOS updates it should be (in my opinion).

One of the best things that I have done is replace the active chipset cooler with a Zalman

I replaced the heatsink/fan on my 6600 GT with the Zalmen Dual heatpipe passive cooler

I have a Zalmen 7000b-Cu CPU cooler.

My computer is in my room so Quiet is a must. The compute is Quiet and cool especially considering the slight overclock. I ran Prime for 8 hours with no errors.

3D Mark05 = 3620
HL2 coast benchmark = 92 fps
I get between 80 and 160 fps while playing CSS
Sandra05 CPU Bench (Dhrystone) = 11008

What case you got that quiet rig built in?
What are your temps?
Are there holes in the side panel near your video card?
Is that neccesary? What are its temps.
What fans are in your case?
Thanks

I find all the continuing problems w/ the A8N unacceptable, shessh they were the first one's out & had a close partnership w/ Nvidia.

Why can a smaller tier company like DFI have fewer problems. I figured by this time all the problems were ironed out, but just read the bios threads, SLI is not even in the bios selection and ppl are getting worst oc'd then prev. bios versions. ie 1.04

If you want, get a A8N-E and I'll trade you a brand new A8N-SLI when my rma comes in, that's how much confidence I have in this mobo......

Personally I think the Ultra versions are having less problems. Someone reported that their is a new rev of the chaintech board. I've had zero problems w/ the DFI Ultra-D and I'd
hope that the A8N-E will have fewer problems than the SLI version..

Jose

Where did your DOA A8n-sli come from? Was it the deluxe model?
What was its symptom?
Thanks

Actually i got a really cheap case and painted the inside of it with sound deadener and then painted over that with a yellow enamel. I have an air in let by the video card and the chipset and video card a passively cooled via Zalmen hestsinks. I have a Zalmen HSF on the CPU as well. The Enermax PSUs are extremely quiet. I have a 120mm Antec fan sucking in from the front and a 80mm Zalmen exhaust fan. It's not silent but it's a quiet hum that doesn?t disturb my peaceful slumber!

CPU temps: 38C idle/~52C load
Chipset: 37C/46C
Video: 49C/58C

Had a A8N-SLI running great for about 2 months now, then one day while burning a disc I get a blue screen of death and it wouldn't reboot (bios screen flashed by then a black screen with flashing cursor).

Thought removing the SCSI card solved the problem....it booted fine without it. So I ordered a replacement, same problem....ASUS says to RMA it. I have flashed and reflashed, cleared CMOS, switched drives around, etc....just a wierd problem....seems more software like than hardware.

ASUS only repairs boards after 30days so once they get it 5-10 days I have to wait then they ship it back. I bought a MSI Neo4/Platinum SLI to compare. Fastest/Stablest wins and the other gets sold.

Based on my experience the latest versions of the MSI board and BIOS are far more stable and faster than ASUS's....ASUS still has a major problem with memory dividers....basically when overclocking only 333MHz divider works and yields less than the proper 5/6 multipler (I get 230FSB memory on 300FSB CPU when 250 Memory is expected).

I am sure ASUS will eventually fix this...it's just when.

In A64 the real memory frequency is always a little lower than what you get by "Mem Freq = Divider * HTT" because the cpu does some roundings in the numbers.
It is acutally:
CPU Clock / [CPU Multi * Inversed Mem Dividier]
The result of the number in the brackets must be upped to the next integer if it has decimals.
E.g if we have our cpu at 8 * 300 = 2400 :
2400 / [ 8 * 6/5] = 2400 / [9.6] = 2400 / 10 = 240

So you can't just do 300 * 5/6 = 250

Are you sure you get below 240 if you try the above example?

Happy is not the word..

I'd say I'm so F&&King MAD......

This is the 2nd POS mobo I get from ZZF...

The mobo booted up the first time, so I then flashed to 1.04 bios. Then rebooted several times to make sure everything is fine.
Only running w/ cpu, memory & video card & cdrom & floopy..

Next I turn off all onboard stuff I don't need. sound , marvel lan. Then I reboot, everything is fine.
Then I add my scsi controller & sblive and connect hd's.

Then I power on and nothing but the fans spin & hd's spin on.. No video, no anything.....

Then I clear'd the cmos & took out the sound & scsi cards then power on and again nothing happens. (I do have the voice post reporter connected to my speakers)

I don't get any post report, and before you ask all my previous components were working in a P4B533-e mobo, except of course for the video card..

Do your self a favor and don't buy this POS mobo.....

Jose

Any luck without the scsi card....for whatever reason the motherboard decided not to work with mine after two months.

I tried w/ the mobo out of the case & w/ just the cpu installed... Nothing.......

I just spoke to my credit card co & they said not to send back the 2nd board till I hear from them, now it's between them and ZZF..

Now I'm ordering a DFI Ultra-D and a Linksys 3 port print spooler. (because of the Linux printing).... OR maybe a Tiger k8w opteron mobo.

Jose

Well I gave it one last try this morning, w/ no cards in, it booted after 12hrs clearing the cmos..

Maybe this board only works on wednesday's... hmm

Anyway I flashed from 1.04 to 1.06 and rebooted fine.

Then I added the sblive & disabled the onboard sound & rebooted fine.
Then I added the scsi card & disabled the SI raid & rebooted fine.

It seems in my experience that 1.04 doesn't like scsi cards.

Anyway I'm formating my drives now and will try to install XPsp2 & RH Linux 3.0 ...

Currently running 2.4mhz (4X HTT, 240 mem 1:1, 10x multiplier)

I still would not recomend this mobo to anyone... At least if this gives me any more problems then I'll get another Ultra-D..
I found a generic USB to parallel cable that allows me to print using my parallel matrix printer in raw mode.

Regards,
Jose

UPDATE: I installed XP, but this mobo hates my sound card..
tried it in both pci#2 & #3 and disabled the marvel lan.
I never had so much problems....

Now I'm real happy w/ the A8N-SLI because ZZF finally agreed to give me a full refund.....

Now I'll be able to finish my Linux box w/ the DFI Ultra-D that I just ordered....

Jose

jose,
I bought my msi k8n neo4 plat from zzf and the replacement mb they send me is a pos too. How much trouble did you have to go through with your cc company before zzf agreed to refund your money? I tried to get a refund from them after the first mb went bad and they refused me. Thanks.

1st - contact your credit card co. and file a dispute . They will tell you that you have to give the retailer a chance to fix the problem.
2nd - rma the defective product w/ some tracking that will prove they received the product. ie ups track #
3rd - see if the product that they sent you is bad/defective. (In both our case's is was)

Now contact your cc company and tell them that the replacement product is defective. This defective product supercedes ZZF's no return / no refund policy.

After this my cc company said I didn't have to rma a 2nd time & that they would deal w/ ZZF...

But I contacted ZZF and explained what my cc company said and said that they have a choice .

Either give me a rma refund and get back the mobo or just loose money w/ my cc company because I wasn't accepting any more asus mobo's.
I could have keep the a8n but I wanted to be fair to ZZF. Although they made me loose close to 4 weeks because of this POS mobo..
But the way I looked at it , is that they only sell the product, they didn't make. The real blame should be placed on Asus..

Jose

Whitewolf,
Can you help me. You have almost the same hardware configuration as I have - same processor, same motheroard, same hard drive, Windows XP SP2, and the same video card.

My problem is that every time the ATI video drivers are installed, the blue screen of death comes up. It only shows for a second and then the computer reboots, coming up with a screen where you can choose to boot in SAFE Mode. If you do not boot in Safe Mode, the exact same thing happens - the XP splash screen comes up and then the blue sreen of death.

I have flashed the BIOS, downloading the latest BIOS from the Asus web site. Also have downloaded the latest drivers from the Powercolor website and the ATI website. Nothing has worked so far.

Any ideas what the prolem is?

Many thanks

I'm happy:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD 3200+ 64 Winchester
1GB PC3200 Crucial Ballistix
eVGA 6800GT
Plextor 716SA
74GB Raptor
300GB SATA Maxtor Maxline 10
Antec TruePower 550W PSU
Antec P160 case

Very sweet set up, not that much faster than my 2500+ Barton but it is nice.
