hard disk error

My pc is using w2k.

Recently, it kept crashing and it re-created a new admin directory under document and setting. the new directory created has some special chars and when I right click on properties, the pop-ip window display 100gb of data. the Hard disk is only 20gb.

On every boot up, it always prompt for checking of data consistency. If I did not cancel, the checking begin and will hang after displaying truncating of data and cross-link file allocation.

If I choose to cancel, boot up is okie but the PC will freeze after some time.

The file system is fat32 and 20gb had been partition into 2 x 10gb drive.
I tried to delete the admin directory after creating a backup, which runs fine but to no avail. the admin folder name can be change, just that when trying to delete the window will give an error that the data is not found or error ideatifying the data.

Is there any disk utility that can check and fix the hdd?

You tried the built in Check Disk? Right click on the drive, select Properties->Tools->Check Now.

Failing that, you say that your file system is FAT32 therefore, I would say grab a DOS boot disk (get one from www.bootdisk.com) and try to delete the directory from DOS.

I have already tried both ways.

When trying chkdsk, it check without error and with automatically fixing the file system, the program will say "Not enough privilege to check, do you wish to check at next boot up?".

When running dos bootable disk, it said can't find the directory and it is still there.

I am thinking for converting from fat32 to ntfs and see if it work.
Is it a good idea?
