Hard drive at 50 celcius

Is 50 degrees celcius an abnormal temperature? It seems kind of high to me.

I have the exact same hard drive. I have read from several places that this is just a glitch in the sensor. What program are you using to identify the temps? Everest? Everest reports mine anywhere from 49-54 C, which is really high. I have an case sensor that reads no where near that low 30s. Feel the drive and if its not real hot, you shouldn't be worried.

Mine gets down to 17 quite often, but when I have had the heater on for a long time it can get up to 25. Just for reference.

i would say its fine... as my hard drive is in an SFF and its been running for 4 years without problems.. its a WD 120

It's kind of high. I've seen hard drives running at 60C, and they seem to tolerate it well enough. No idea how long they'd last though.
I did relocate those drives to 5.25" bays using adapters. Even without direct airflow, it still helped reduce the drives' temperatures just because of the surrounding airspace.

ive got the same hard drive, with a 120mm fan blowing on it, i max at around 25

My drive maxes at 45 according to Speed Fan - but it's stuffed into the 3.5" bay on a SN25P.

That's a pretty high reading, but it's within spec.

How is your case ventilation configured?

Traditionally, cases were designed for front-to-back air flow, with hard drives in the front of the case with cool room ambient temperature air running over them.

Many current cases are designed with side case vents that provide an air flow path from side-intake to rear-vent fan. This can result in very low front intake air flow over the hard drives, resulting in higher drive operating temps.

If your case has side-vents, I suggest taping them off to see how if the hard drive runs cooler.

most drives are rated to be 'safe' to 55c . . i don't like mine over 30-35 at full read/write . .

but i've seen some of dells drives at 57c+/- with cpu and hdd at full load . . this is in small form factor cases as well . .

so i think 50 would be OK if thats its max temp . . I'd personally look into cooling if it gets much warmer than that.

My 10k Raptors typically see 25-35c depending on outside temp and load . .
