hard drive brands

mine crapped out after about a year (seagate) and i don't know if i am able to send it in on warrenty

i put up the 3 big name ones to go with, let me know if there is a reason to go with anything else

is there a speed issue i should know about between SATA and IDE?

i was told they go at the same speed

Well...just make sure, you go Seagate, I don't think anyone can argue Seagate> Western Digital > maxtor I dont kno wmuch about Sata v.s IDE

SATA 150 isn't any faster in the realworld than IDE 133 is. It's just a marketing gimmick for most SATA drives. If you go for SATA, assume the only benefits you'll receive is a newer interface and a smaller cable.

IMO, you just got a dud. Happens with all brands, unfortunately.

As far as the Raptor goes, I'd say it's not that great of a buy for most people.

What are you PC specs and what do you use it for?

My preference is Seagate. Those new Seagates come with 5 yr warranty.

SATA isn't a huge leap forward from IDE, but if you're motherboard has SATA and you're buying a new HDD get a SATA.

Personally, my I have WD's in a few machines, and they all work perfectly well.

Really, WD or Seagate are both good. I think Seagate is a little more expenise, but also a little bit quieter.

Yes, but happens with any brand, like my old maxtor lasted 4 years...but maxtor seems to have the highest failing rate, so buy with caution.

For my next one, I'm thinking about this hot Maxtor Atlas 15k II! $199 shipped. Now where can I get $199...

For ATA drives, I'd probably get Seagate (yay, guaranteed fluid bearings) and focus on getting 8MB cache first. Interface-wise... mmmm... whatever. I could see myself breaking the SATA data connector off of my SATA drive if I were careless, now wouldn't that be fun. PATA connectors are physically almost unbreakable.

If the long cables or the one-drive-per-cable aspect of SATA benefit you, those could be points in SATA's favor (no need to put two hard drives close to eachother so the cable can reach them both). Also, if you use some SATA drives, that leaves you more PATA positions for other drives. Some people need all the drives they can get to store their, uh... yeah.

Western Digital or Seagate - I doubt you actually notice a difference.

I'd go with whoever is cheaper.

No experience with Seagate... I've been using Western Digitals without any issues for a few years now, I love 'em.
Used some Maxtors before the WDs, nothing but problems, I'll never again get any mainstream Maxtor drive.

I've been using Seagate for a long time. I like it a lot. I haven't had problems. They're uber quiet too and have a long warranty. And also, go to seagate's site. Do the RMA thing, I thought I didn't have a warranty on a seagate that died. On the box it said it had a 3 year warranty, and it actually had 5 years. So, get that checked out...

I have not had a bad experience with maxtor. I have owned about 10 seagate hard drives, 3 maxtors, 2 WD's and a Hitachi, and none of them have given me problems. On average, I find the maxtors to be a little quicker than the other drives. I can personaly recomend the DiamondMax III's and MaxLines (with 16mb cache), they are incredibly fast, comparing to a WD 74gb raptor in most cases. They are also much quieter than past maxtors I have owned.

MAxtors tend to have a higher fail rate than some other drives, but they are also a tadchepaer sometimes. I woul dprobably go with Seagte (that's what I have now). They are pretty cheap (comparable to the rest at least), have decent performance, have excellent warranties and low fail rates, and they run very quiet... WD is also pretty good, but I would just go for the better price and warranty...

I own 2 maxtors, 1 seagate and 1 WD. none of them have competely crapped out on me, but the seagate has begun to shown it's age as it's noticeably slower and noiser than the rest of the bunch.

the difference between PATA and SATA isn't really important, as no modern hard drives really reach the maximum transfer rate (be it 133 or 150) anyway. However, because the raptor is 10,000, it might be better to get it. I have one, and it's not that loud. All 2005 WD drives have FDBs, too.

Depending on their price and performance, I'd get any WDs, Hitachis, Seagate, Maxtors, since I've yet to encounter any problem from any of them (I've been lucky, I suppose)
